Dear Readers,

Our Company is a responsible corporate citizen with an unwavering commitment towards operating its business in a socially responsible way, by taking into consideration the wider interests of the community and the environment. The CSR initiatives of EIL aim to assist socially and economically weaker segments of society, building stronger communities and creating a sustainable environment.

Even though EIL's initiatives in this area have been appreciated in various forums, the release of CSR Coffee Table Book by Hon'ble Union Minister of State (I/C) for Petroleum & Natural Gas was indeed a glorious acknowledgement of our efforts at the highest levels of the Government. As such, it is only befitting that this issue of Hamara EIL is dedicated to the Company's social outreach efforts, spanning various areas like education, healthcare, women empowerment, environment protection etc.

EIL is also taking vigorous strides across its business operations, with new projects secured in overseas territories, key projects reaching critical milestones and prestigious awards bestowed on the Company, all of this is encapsulated in various sections of the journal.

The creative talents of our employees also find manifestation in the ensuing pages, through articles, poems and a collage of photographs, capturing the most scenic landscapes. We hope, going forward, more and more of our colleagues would come forward to enrich this journal with their creative expressions!!

This new title reflects the recent augmentation of the domain of

Contracts & Purchase professionals in EIL to Supply Chain

Management. The Contracts & Purchase function in EIL has been a

subset of the broader Procurement function which also included

Supplier & Contractor Enlistment, Inspection & Expediting and

Shipping (or Logistics). These four functions put together

constituted the end to end Supply Chain Management function in EIL.

In order to enrich the job profile of the Procurement professionals in

EIL and give it a horizontal enlargement as well as professional

enrichment, it was decided in the beginning of 2016 to amalgamate

these four functions into a comprehensive Supply Chain

Management function.

This manual has been released as an e-book, as an initiative towards

conservation of natural resources. The users shall have to refer the

same on their desktops or smart phones or tablet PCs. To ensure that

unnecessary wastage of paper does not happen, the printing option

is blocked on the ebook.

Public procurement in India is both a complex and important subject.

It is a systemic activity across the Central and State Governments and

their autonomous, statutory bodies and public sector enterprises,

with a wide variety of sector/institution specific requirements.

Local governments, at the Municipal and Panchayat levels also follow

their own procurement practices. Diversity in procurement practices

is an integral feature of the vast governmental system in the country.

The subject is further made complex as India does not have a single

public procurement policy or public procurement law. There is no

separate department in the Central Government to guide public

procurement authorities.

What this implies for a procurement executive, is being cognizant and

well aware of the ever changing guidelines/ directives to be followed

throughout the Supply Chain Management function. This Supply

Chain Management Manual has been published considering this

besides realizing the need for a single document encompassing all

guidelines / directives relating to public procurement in EIL.

Ammonia Plant of Indorama Fertilizer Project commissioned

It is a matter of rejoice and pride for Engineers India Limited family in

Cold Flow Cross Flow Reactor (CFR) - A proof of concept at EIL R&D

EIL R&D, BPCL R&D and IIT Delhi have jointly established the cross

flow reactor configuration in collaboration with Centre for High

Technology (CHT) for hydro processing application, where liquid

flows downwardly and gas flows radially through an annular catalyst

bed. Normally, Trickle Bed type Reactor (TBR) configuration is being

used in refining industry for similar applications which are operated

with excess hydrogen causing higher feed vaporization and bed

pressure drop. To meet product quality norms, catalyst requirements

are higher and operating conditions severe, which result is non

selective cracking of feedstock to light ends. Cross flow type reactor

configuration offers the following significant advantages over

conventional TBR:

1) Reduction in product inhibition effects

2) Lower bed pressure drop

3) Reduced hydrogen consumption

4) Operation at low pressure and low temperature

5) Increased selectivity through minimization of secondary

cracking reactions

Conceptualization and fabrication of the reactor with annular shell for

hosting catalyst bed is a challenging job. EIL-R&D team took up this

challenge and decided to go ahead with the project. EIL-R&D team

designed, fabricated and installed the Cold Flow Cross Flow Reactor

(CFR) at EIL-R&D with in-house resources and efforts. This has

resulted in tremendous cost effectiveness for the entire project.

C3 Stripper Column Tested with Piping at BPCL - KRL

C3 Stripper at FCCU, IREP, BPCL-KR (88.2m length, 8.5m diameter

and 1683 MT weight) fabricated in pieces at nearby fabrication yard

was transported to site and erected in 4 pieces using 1000 MT Demag

CC 6400 main crane and 550 MT Demag CC 2600 trailing crane.

On completion of erection / welding / inspection of all site joints, the

stripper column shall be hydro tested in situ, on foundation, as

envisaged.

FCCU team lead by Shri M.Srinivasalu, AGM proposed to take up

hydro test of the piping connected to the stripper column along with

the column (12 piping loops consisting of Overhead line from

Stripper and lines to Re-boilers ranging from 42” to 20”) as an

initiative for reducing the time towards testing these lines separately.

A detailed study regarding the lines of hydro test pressure as per line

schedule and the pressure to which the lines shall be subjected due to

water column in the equipment was conducted and consent from EIL

HO piping / BPCL taken to proceed with the hydro test of the piping

loops along with the equipment.

Static head of the water column within stripper column has aided in

achieving the test pressure in connected loops. The test pressure at

the column top was 37.03 kg/cm2 and bottom was 45.03.

Hydro Test as planned above was completed on May 13, 2016, which

achieved a progress of 18000 IM of hydro test in a single day. Testing

of each loop separately would have taken a minimum of 3 weeks,

which was actually executed in a single day along with hydro test of

the column.

Kudos to team FCCU-IREP for achieving another milestone and

implementation of new ideas to reduce construction time.

Flare Light up completed successfully at OPaL Dahej

OPaL Dahej achieved another critical milestone with lighting up of

flare. As a mark of exemplary commitment, sheer dedication and

determination, the flare package has been brought to commissioning

stage despite financial hurdles faced during the execution stage by

the EPC contractor. Team EIL achieved the completion of this critical

package well in time, often directly involved with grass root workers

for execution, expediting and monitoring. Also worth mentioning is

the exceptional support received from the client in terms of quick

decisions made in clearing the bottle necks faced during execution,

e.g. air lifting of critical equipments, speedy processing of sub-

contractor’s invoices etc. which has paid back in the form of

realization of this very crucial milestone, paving the way for

commissioning of other units and offsite utilities in coming days.

The demountable derrick type Flare Stack installed at OPaL, Dahej

has 6 flare risers and provision for one future flare riser (80”). This is

first time in the history of EIL that such a Flare has been commissioned.

Details of Flare risers installed at Dahej :

l DFCU + AU HC Flare (80”) l Polymer Flare (54”) l LP Flare (28”)

l C4 Acetylene Flare (18”) l Main Sour Flare (18”) l Auxiliary Sour Flare

(18”)

The elevated flare tips are mounted on top of risers supported by the

steel trussed (derrick) structure which consists of 6 modules. The

last module of Derrick structure is at an elevation of 109 m from

grade level and flare tips are at EL. 120m.

The risers are erected with the help of tilting table and a dedicated

winch system supplied with the flare package. Demountable derrick

allows user the ability to lower the flare tip and pilots to grade through

the use of winch system, guide rails, tilting tables, and flanged riser

sections for maintenance, inspection, or repair activities without ever

having to shut the flare down. The demountable derrick type Flare

Stack System is being executed as a part of IU&O package by M/s

Fernas and is being supplied by M/s Zeeco, Inc., USA.

Final Milestone nailed with successful Mechanical Completion of RFCC Revamp Project at Sohar Refinery, Orpic, Oman

With immense satisfaction, pride & pleasure, Team EIL recently

returned from Oman having successfully executed RFCC Revamp

Project of Orpic at Sohar, Oman With the last manway box-up of

RFCC unit, the Mechanical completion of Turnaround -2016 of Sohar

Refinery has been achieved at 2215 Hours on April 20, 2016.

Sohar Refinery Turn-Around (SR TA 2016) was by far the biggest and

most complex turnaround Orpic’s Sohar Refinery witnessed since its

inception in 2005.

The turnaround was extremely challenging - considering:-

• Quantum of the workload of RFCC unit revamp along-with replacement of world’s largest 650MT RG1 dome of RFCC Regenerator

• Revamp of CDU / PRU including replacement of 170 trays of PP Splitter column / LPG Merox / LPG Amine / Heavy Gasoline Stripper unit / Sea Water Cooling system

• Interfaces involved

• Very optimistic and challenging time schedule of 46 Mechanical days for the entire turnaround to be completed on 14.04.2016 (Pre-defined on 17.12.2014).

EIL, as PMC, has been closely associated with process & detailed

engineering, tendering, procurement and construction supervision

of RFCC revamp & other Units Improvement project from

17.12.2014. This is one of the mega turnaround in the recent past EIL

has undertaken on foreign land for refinery of International repute.

The challenges for executing such a gigantic turnaround on foreign

soil were of totally different dimensions - as every activity for the

turnaround was scheduled and monitored on hourly basis,

coordination with multiple foreign agencies consisting people from

various countries with different culture, language, work style, level of

understanding etc.In addition, other constraints like non-availability

of long duration visas, gate pass, commuting within refinery

complex, communication issues, 13 hours per shift / per day working

without any week off etc. were formidable obstructions.

Further, unexpected but most common issues of any turnaround

(shut down) were also encountered and dealt with - like shortage /

damaged / non-compliance to dimensions & specifications of

material, engineering mismatch wrt. in-situ conditions and then

during construction execution - toppling of crane, heavy rains,

spillage of oil in refinery, limited time for NDT, permits for hot work,

inspection finding & recommendations adding further scope etc.

while dealing with additional stresses & pressures to meet the

requirements of extremely tight scheduled timeline of turnaround

with no option for delay.

ORPIC (our client) and EIL, together as a team, accepted all the

challenges & hardships and with their untiring efforts &

determination achieved final milestones by successfully

“Mechanically Completing” the various units within the pre-defined

TIMELINE of Sohar Refinery Trunaround-2016.

In addition to that, with firm commitment and dedication along-with

back-end support from HO-engineering and EIL management, Team

EIL deputed at Sohar Refinery during turnaround also converted all

adversities into opportunities and earned an everlasting reputation

and image of Brand EIL. On 15.03.2016, Sohar Refinery celebrated

EIL foundation day with a difference!! EIL banner along-side Orpic

banner flew high on the top dome of CDU column while it was lifted

and erected on the existing column. Emotionally charged Team EIL

saluted the high flying EIL banner and celebrated the Foundation day

on foreign soil with great pride and honour with life time memories.

Similarly, brand EIL was again flying high at its full charm when

world’s largest 650 MT RG1- dome of RFCC regenerator of Sohar

refinery was lifted for installation on existing regenerator.

EIL's name and fame was further enhanced when 2 of Team EIL

members received “Certificate of Appreciation” on Successful

contribution in SR/ PP 2016 Turnaround from Orpic management.

EIL was also honoured to distribute the awards during HSE award

ceremony. At number of other occasions & meetings also, Orpic &

Contractors working at site appreciated EIL for its contribution in the

successful completion of Sohar Refinery Turnaround-2016.

Orpic and EIL team of RFCC Revamp Project, Sohar Refinery, Oman

could exhibit and offer their best because of unwavering trust and

seamless support from Orpic Management, EIL Management & EIL

friends directly or indirectly involved with their technical support &

good wishes.

Revival of Mobile Laboratory Facilities by EIL R&D Team

A mobile laboratory fitted with hydrocarbon analyzers hosted inside an

air-conditioned pressurized chamber was supplied to EIL R&D for

online analysis of samples from fired heaters in 1990 under UNDP

funding. This facility was being used to study the efficiency of heaters

and energy efficiency improvement of refineries at various locations

during 1992-1996. Afterwards, due to changes in scope and non

availability of opportunities, it remained idle and was put for disposal

as scrap in 2002. During CTL project operation, opportunity presented

itself for using this facility. R&D team took lead in capturing the same to

make the Mobile Lab operational through rectification of the truck, its

chamber, pressurization system, air conditioning system, roof and floor of

the lab etc. Now it is fully operational, fitted with GC for online gas

analysis from CTL pilot plant.

Various analyzers can be installed in line with requirements and may

be used in the same Mobile Lab for online analysis at other pilot

plants also. This feat was accomplished by R&D team on its own,

with nominal costs but huge team efforts towards restoration of the

Mobile laboratory facilities.

Hydrocarbon Entry in OPaL premises

It was a moment of great joy and pride when three propylene tankers

arrived at OPaL Dahej on May 2, 2016 to unload bought out propylene

for storage in spheres. It is the first process hydrocarbon entry in the

petrochemical complex.

Due to delays in completion of offsite facilities required to receive

Naphtha, C2, C3, C4 and because of Polypropylene Unit (PPU) being

in advance stages of completion, it has been decided to commission

this unit with 3500 MT of bought out propylene. Accordingly, Gantry-

4, Tankfarm-7, Fuel Gas Skid, Flare and related piping systems of

Pipe Rack have been kept in ready state. Now, that the first lot of

Propylene Tankers have been received, commissioning processes of

offsite facilities have started by taking vapour into spheres. Purging

of one sphere with propylene has been completed. Liquid propylene

unloading is in progress.

All safety precautions have been complied for safe operation. Very

shortly, requisite feed shall be made available at the battery limits of

PPU. CEO and COO, OPaL congratulated team EIL for achieving this

crucial milestone.

Ms. Swarup emphasized on HR being a scientific and technical discipline – human minds being more complex to reckon than machines. People being the key resource of the Company, she said, that the success achieved by the organization primarily hinges on the excellence delivered by its people. Creating an environment of credibi l i ty, transparency, upbeat responsiveness and professionalism was a responsibility of HR Personnel. The focus of the HR policies, rules and framework must be aligned with the business strategy. The HR agenda, Syndicate Discussions, Performance Contracts and other recent HR initiatives are all but an attempt to introspect, improve and equip EIL’s culture to harmoniously adapt to changing times. Ms. Swarup encouraged all employees to serve as brand ambassadors of the Company and contribute towards upholding its image through efficient working.

Shri H S Sohal, CVO, EIL conveyed his best wishes towards meaningful deliberation in the meet. He also impressed upon honesty, integrity and the need of written records in processes and dealings. His concise speech conveyed his deep insights.

The CVO’s address was followed by release of the HR Annual Report for 2015-16 – a compendium of trials and triumphs of HR in the year bygone, besides serving as a guide for future endeavors.

Dr. Aquil Busrai illumined the audience with his profound experience – a cumulative treasure of over 40 years of diverse industry and academic knowledge. He spoke on the nature, role and facets of traditional and contemporary, corporate HR. Analogous to the trinity of the Hindu fold – Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, he asserted that HR played a creative, conformist as well as innovatory role in the organization’s culture. The responsibility of HR lies in creating business value, retaining talent and serving as an agent of positive change in the organization. Lt. Gen S P Kochhar drew parallels between the army and the corporate world in the context of Human Capital. He stressed on Company pride, the role of leadership and employee motivation in ensuring high productivity, professionalism and fairness on the part of managers and the need of cultivating a feeling of belonging to the organization. Relating with subordinates, leading from the front and by example, honesty and perception of ground realities can help in the development of strong bonds amongst employees besides nurturing a healthy work culture, he remarked.

The Inaugural Session of XV HR Meet was followed by Session-I which commenced with the constitution of 8 cross functional syndicate teams from the attending professionals.

The eight identified topics for the syndicates were:

1. Strengthening Knowledge Management Systems

2. Action Plan for Data Accuracy & Integrated Database

3. Image and Brand Building

4. Coaching and Mentoring for Winning Outcomes

5. Building Competencies to meet Future Requirements

6. Enhancing Effective Communications

7. Enhancing Professional Service for Customer Delight

8. Skilling for an Agile Workforce

This was followed by an enlightening session titled “Listening to Industry Leaders” wherein EIL HR fraternity was enriched by the wisdom of Directors (HR) of BPCL, GAIL and IOCL. In his address, Shri V. Cherian, Dir. (HR), IOCL dwelled upon his two-decade old association with EIL and the enduring working relationship that exist between the two companies. He emphasized that EIL has been a trusted partner of IOCL in its various hydrocarbon endeavours which exemplifies the excellence demonstrated by EIL despite competitions from various quarters.

Shri SP Gathoo, Dir. (HR), BPCL expressed that capital and technology are no longer key differentiators in driving organizational growth. Elaborating on the statement, he said that there is no dearth of capital for the right business idea as can be witnessed from the start-up revolution unfolding in the country. Technology also provides no first-mover advantage since any product can always be repackaged later as aptly demonstrated by Apple Inc. across various products. In such a scenario, it is only the people dimension of a corporate which can differentiate it from its competitors. Addressing the gathering, Shri M. Ravindran, Dir. (HR), GAIL stated that every line manager must act as an HR manager since they have the pulse of their teams. Shri Ravindran urged the HR professionals to strive toward delivering the best possible results within the ambit of existing government guidelines applicable to PSUs.

Representatives from different construction sites, regional and branch offices presented HR issues and highlights pertaining to their station. Discussions ensued in the house on various concerns mentioned in their presentations.

the talent landscape, he said that while big data analytics would create the ability to track skills & expertise around an organisation with a high-degree of precision, disruptive technologies like software robotics would fundamentally eliminate human intervention in many work processes. “The Millenials are having the most profound impact on the talent supply chain by eschewing the safety of a cushy corporate job for entrepreneurial endeavours thereby fuelling the start-up revolution in the country” Shri Bhasin added. The proliferation of experimentation, high end technology, machine learning, virtual workforce, private-public partnerships, collaboration, creative discussion, freedom of expression to employees and higher investment by the organization on training its personnel are some of the essential elements required to keep pace with industry across the globe, he said.

The valedictory session saw words of encouragement from Shri VC Bhandari, ED(I/C )HR. He reiterated the informational merit of the sessions at HR Meet. identified parameters. Post inaugural session, the workshop witnessed breakout sessions for select focus areas namely Pipelines, Rotating & Static Equipments, Automation & Control Systems, and LNG value chain.

Each break out session had a group of industry representatives who deliberated on the subject to capture three key activities namely Quick Wins, Strategic Must Do’s, and Long Term Investments. The matrix had two broad areas such as Goods & Services and aspects such as Regulatory, Skill Development, Technology & R&D, Funding Access, Infrastructure and others.

Three key take ways emergent of the workshop are as under:

1. The sectors such as Pipelines, Rotating & Static Equipments, Automation & Control Systems has attended a significant indigenization quotient and the participants commended the excellent efforts rendered by EIL. From the Make In India context, it is felt that “Ease of Doing Business” would further facilitate the segment for enhanced manufacturing facilities and augmented export opportunities.

2. The sector namely LNG value chain needs immediate attention towards indigenisation given the niche technologies involved in cryogenics, cold boxes, re-gas facilities, exotic MoCs, LNG storage tanks and more specifically the LNG ship building.

3. Commending the pioneering efforts of select CPSEs, the participants of the break out session felt the need for industry leadership towards this niche segment of LNG value chain. The team expressed that organisations such as EIL, Petronet LNG, Cochin Shipyard etc. should take lead and pursue this segment with vigour and sustained focus under the ambit of Make In India.

The captured insights, suggestions and proposed action points are planned to be presented by M/s Deloitte with collaboration of EIL to MoP&NG as part of the road map for Make In India campaign.

the result is such an obvious reaction, but we are blaming you for the action.

I hope we all realize our mistake, must save the legacy, we can not make.

One day,I had a session with him,

Which taught me few things,

It began with my strengths,

And continued at length.

I rejoiced at what was said,

But soon this monologue went dead!

Again it resumed with my weakness,

Which was conveyed to me with sweetness,

It appeared to be a sugarcoated pill,

And indeed was full of thrill.

The pitch went high and low,

I thought it for me a deathblow,

It set my thoughts in motion,

My whole being went through emotions.

For a while it changed my mood,

Then it compelled me to brood,

I feared the talk to be one way,

And had to interrupt mid way.

With assurance of being it two way,

I managed to keep my worries at bay,

Now the talk turned two way,

And I had my say.

It remained so for a while,

In a jiffy,it relapsed to its natural style,

The counseling ended with a perception,

Nevertheless, it was a useful session.

Integrated Electrical and Process Control & Automation System- A new approach in the Horizon

1.0 Introduction

The control and automation system of today’s oil and gas industry is highly evolved. Well defined and ever reliable complex programs and logics ensure plant uptime with minimum man-power and maximum efficiency. Not only does the system ensure smooth and reliable performance of the plant, but also, the system communicates relevant plant performance information (plant trip, shutdown, current production status, flare loss etc.) to management effectively and automatically. Advancement in technology has made it possible for a production in-charge to monitor plant production sitting at the other corner of the world.

However, the process control & automation system referred as Distributed Control System or simply DCS current era has limited information exchange with the Electrical system despite being in world of digitisation with standardised communication system. This is primarily due to the fact that the way these two systems have evolved over the years. The evolution of Process Control & Automation system has been primarily based on development of open digital communication protocols between the sensors in field and control room. The standardised data exchange protocols between field devices (transmitter, control valve etc.) and the control system ensured seamless communication between the devices. Currently, HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) and foundation field bus are two of such protocols commonly used which provide plug and play of field devices with control system. Even the wireless communication is making its mark with development of such types of open protocols.

The Electrical automation system commonly known as Electrical Control System or ECS has been more of a proprietary based system for a long time, with various Intelligent Electrical Devices(IEDs) of particular make communicating with their dedicated electrical control systems over proprietary networks. However, the development of IEC 61850 standard has been a game changer in terms of standardisation of data exchange between the IEDs and the ECS system. Evolution of this revolutionary standard has provided the path forward that just like the plant automation system, each and every IED situated in the sub-station can communicate with a common Electrical Control System (ECS) irrespective of their make and model.

This also opens the path for integrating electrical and instrumentation system. The future of automation industry beholds the merger of both of these systems for plant data exchange over same network.

Looking closely towards data and information exchange between the electrical and process control & automation systems, signals can be broadly categorised into the following major types:-

1. Critical shut-down signals from the Plant Safety System for

various motor/equipment trips.

2. Running indications, fault feedbacks and permissive indications from MCCs to the plant DCS.

3. Signals like speed of rotations, current consumption of motor driven equipment like pumps, compressors and other electrical equipment related information.

The first category primarily involves information exchange related to plant shutdown and safety and hence hardwired. Equipment related operational information and status are generally exchanged via serial link thus reducing the cabling.

IEC 61850

Communication Networks and Systems in Substations, is a

standard for the design of electrical substation automation

defined by the International Electro-technical Commission

(IEC) .

An IEC group of 60 members worked in three groups from

1995 and came out with IEC61850 in the year 2004, with an

objective of achieving high inter-operability of IEDs from

different manufacturers with common ECS.

2.0 Process Control & Automation system and ElectricalControl System: A Brief Overview

For process control & automation system, the heart of the system is the Controller sub-system and for plant interlock and safety, there is Emergency shutdown (ESD) sub-system.The controller takes signal from the field and generates necessary response (for example, closing a control valve, shutting down a shutdown valve, tripping pump etc.) for plant operation as well as safety. The operator stations working over the plant control layer act as platforms from which the plant operators continuously monitor the plant and initiate required response when needed. However, relevant information is also transferred to the Plant Information and Enterprise levels. The plant information layer typically has software tools like alarm management system taking care of equipment alerts and process alarms for meaningful information. The asset management system takes care of equipment performance. The production management system takes care of production schedules. Usually, communication between these two layers involves an additional hardware like OPC server. The enterprise management is the highest layer typically used for enterprise level production monitoring, planning and generally used for setting corporate level goals and targets. (Fig.-1)

HART & FOUNDATION FIELDBUS

Taking benefits of the digital era revolution, the

instrumentation and automation system manufacturers

evolved various digital communication protocols. HART or

Highway addressable remote transducer is an industrial

automation protocol conceptualised by Bell Labs & developed

by Rosemount inc. in 1986. This protocol uses 4-20mA analog

current for process data signal transfer with digital signal

superimposed on it for diagnostic information and accepted by

industry.

Fieldbus organisation protocol was developed in 1994 by

Fieldbus foundation, which was a non-profit organisation with

above 350 manufacturers and suppliers working together to

develop an inter-operable , non-propriety all digital protocol.

The electrical system mainly comprise of ECS system with various IEDs and the switchgears. The IEDs are microprocessor based controllers and are designed to perform logics and to trip the switchgear directly, thus safeguarding the electrical equipment in fastest possible time.

The information available with the IEDs get transferred to the ECS controller system for power management which includes control functions like on-off control of HV and MV breakers, On/Off control of capacitor banks, load control and tie line control, load shedding, active power control, Synchronisation, event history etc.

Since all sub-stations are not manned, the entire ECS system can be operated from the main electrical operator room which is manned. Fig. 2 is indicative of electrical automation system.

The hardware for the electrical control functions and DCS/PLC functions are unique in that the IEDs work like a sprinter ,delivering lightening quick response whenever needed to protect the equipment, whereas , the process controller sub-system on the other hand requires to execute complex algorithms and handle multiple tasks of different nature just like a decathlon player.

3.0 Integration of Electrical and Process Control & Automation System:

The presence of a single ECS communication network opens the gateway for seamless integration of process control & automation system (DCS) and electrical control systems. Many control system vendors are gradually coming up with solutions in this direction developing IEC61850 compliant electrical control systems capable of seamlessly communicating with the process control & automation system over same network. Even though through this integration data exchange is ensured, while it is also necessary to ensure that Plant DCS System will not be able to control any parameters of the electrical control system and vice versa. Fig. 3 indicates the typical scheme.

4.0 Benefits of Integration:

Integrating Process Control & Automation system with electrical control system has enormous benefit All information, including the electrical system can be accessed from the DCS which ensures that the Asset Management System (sitting on the plant information network) and higher layers get access to complete plant assets(both process and electrical). As a result, the plant policies regarding production, shut-down etc. can be planned and decided based on readily available information of both electrical and process control & automation systems.

Added benefits of a uniform network security is also paramount as common network for electrical and process control system offers solution to implement an common cyber security system.

The Automation vendors have already started to come up with working solutions for small standalone plants like terminals, gas stations and small sized captive power plants. However, in the long run industry may be poised for such solutions for refinery and petrochemical complexes.

Hundreds of cars, few hundreds of bikes, some buses, few autos, and few walkers are all moving and moving fast towards the same destination. As the clock keeps ticking, my mind carries some imaginations to gain time - can all three colors in the traffic lights would remain green for some time ?. Or I become a super man who can fly over Delhi’s roads. The journey gets nervous. As we reach the destination, all of us rush towards a machine, with their index fingers ready. I am sure you have guessed what I am talking about.

A queue to get down the bus and as one goes through the queue and rushes towards the machines, lot of obstacles ( as in life) - parked cars blocking the way, slowing moving autowallah testing the patience, and even the slow moving colleagues seem to be a big ‘obstacle’ on the way to the goal . After coming across all the obstacles, the security guard stops and hence shocks. He asks for the ticket (read ID card). Another obstacle crossed and I get closer to my goal. As I run towards the lifts, I can see some more colleagues’ marathoning all their way towards their goals.

The obstacles are not yet over. Next one is the lift queue. As always, people chose the shortest queue. But after seeing that the other queue moves faster, they switch over queues. After the budgeted wait time, I have catched the bus (read lift). As the lift stops at multiple floors, as the people get in and out, as people pave way for others by getting out for a while and some accidently miss the lift while moving out for a while. All these are daily routines, however never boring.

Some prefer the lifts, some prefer the stairs (as there is no waiting time), while some come with helmets and some without helmets, but the goal is same. They see some of their friends coming back with a relaxed face, as relaxed as their son’s IIT admission is done. The relaxed faces are good enough to indicate that these friends are done with the goal. The ‘completed’ friends give expressive signals to their ‘approaching’ colleagues meaning that ‘still time is left and you can achieve your goal’

After the entire marathon, I come near my goal (read machine), with my fingers double ready, only to notice that I have to go through another queue. As I keep hearing the famous punching sound and as the queue keeps moving, I hold my breath now and then. As I notice that there is only 20 seconds to go.. I pray my favorite god, to keep the clock still for at least 10 seconds!!!.

10..9…8…7… oh the guy before me is done with his punch and I wait for his ‘sound’ as much I would wait for mine. Oops! He did not get the sound. I am worried than anybody else. He tries one more ‘time’, eating away my precious time. I feel as if he is the villain of my story. Coming promptly in the climax scene and

standing in front of the hero’s goal. As he get his ‘sound’ , leaving no seconds behind, I close my eyes and push my long waiting index finger into the machine and keep waiting for the ‘sound’. At this moment, it would be difficult for even a stethoscope to count my heart beat. As seconds pass away, the sound did not come. My BP raises like dal price and my heart beat raises like milk price. Once again, I give hard work to my index finger, pressing the machine so hard as if I am trying to break it. I open my eyes only to notice that the machine has stopped working (read luck). Leaving all down, I marathon to the next floor, only to see another queue.

Here again, the continuous ‘ sounds ‘, as the queue moves and the friend before me completes his punch, as I hear the ‘sound ‘ of his successful punch, I keep my long waiting index finger ready once again. To my utter dismay, the friend before puts his finger again trying to do a double punch. At this instance, my face turns exactly like that of a broken chole bhature. Another 2 seconds wait, but it looks liked a 4 year term. And at last, as I take out my precious index finger and place it on the machine, I hear the same famous ‘sound’ and yes, this time its mine! Oh! Yes! I am done just with punching! But not with the day! Miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I punch again in the evening!
