Cute Little Bugs

1 Have you ever had a jar to catch cute little bugs in? Have you ever caught the red ones with black dots on their backs and put them in your jar? Has anyone said, "Put that ladybug back. It is a good bug." Well, they are right.

3 Ladybugs love to eat aphids. Aphids are tiny little insects that harm many plants. These tiny insects suck juice from plants' leaves. This causes the leaves to die. When the leaves die the plant will usually die or not produce good flowers or vegetables.

4 Ladybugs love to eat! A ladybug can eat up to 50 aphids a day. This is the reason farmers and gardeners love the cute, little bugs. In fact, they will buy ladybugs and put them in their gardens.

5 The next time you are out looking for bugs to occupy, or be inside, your jar, remember to leave the ladybugs alone. They help keep the aphid population down.

Rainforests

1 Rainforests are special types of forests that are always hot and moist. They grow near the equator where the temperatures are the hottest in the world. It rains in the rainforest almost every day. The sun and rain cause the plants to grow quickly. Some of the trees are enormous and measure over two hundred feet tall.

Orangutans

2 A rainforest’s top layer of branches is called the canopy. It receives the most sunlight. The leaves here grow very thick and shade the forest floor below. Many strange and wonderful animals live in the canopy. Each rainforest has animals that are unique to it.

Orangutans can hold onto the branches with their hands and feet. They can even use their feet to peel bananas. People are surprised by how intelligent orangutans are. Some people think they act a lot like humans. The word orangutan actually means “people of the forest.”

Chameleons

Anacondas

4 The African rainforests are home to an interesting animal known as the chameleon. Chameleons are large lizards with amazing features. A chameleon’s tongue is longer than its body, and its large eyes can move in different directions. Chameleons can change their skin color to match the objects around them.

The Life of a Civil War Soldier

1 Albert Pike, an American lawyer, journalist, and soldier once said, “What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal.”

2 The Civil War was a dreadful time for many Americans. However, the soldiers were affected the most. They did whatever they could to get through the cold, hot, sickness, and starving times. Life as a Civil War soldier was not an easy one. Most soldiers were young. The average age of a soldier was 25 years old. Soldiers had to leave their homes and families not knowing if they would return. Being killed during a battle was not their only concern. A shortage of food and shelter was a problem. Also diseases took the lives of many soldiers. The long hours spent training and marching did not make it any easier for them.

3 Soldiers during the Civil War only had a few supplies with them since they had to walk everywhere they went. They only carried their necessities. Some of the items needed were weapons, water, and sleeping gear. It was also common for soldiers to have writing supplies. These would play a big role in their lives for the next few years.

4 Although mail was slow, soldiers spent time writing and reading letters from home. They also got packages. Some of the items sent were socks, shirts, food, soap, and combs. Soldiers looked forward to getting mail from their families. It was a celebration. They liked to read their mail aloud to the other soldiers. This helped them get through the hardships. Soldiers also helped each other during difficult times.

5 When summer and fall came, soldiers would sit around their tents and fires. They told jokes and stories. At least one person knew how to play a banjo, guitar, or fiddle. The sound of music would spread around the camp like wildfire. It wasn’t always the best noise, but it lifted their spirits. A favorite song sang was “Home, Sweet Home” because they couldn’t wait to go home.

6 During the winter, soldiers would enjoy a snowball fight. Any other time, they joined in on races. They would race cockroaches, razorback hogs, and men in wheelbarrows. Also baseball was a popular game to play. When they weren’t playing games, they spent time alone. Soldiers also did chores and daily jobs. However, most of their time was spent getting ready for the next battle.

7 These men were proud to fight for their cause. They fought for what they believed in. Their sacrifice should not go unnoticed.

Macaroni and Cheese, Please! Macaroni and cheese has been enjoyed in the United States for at least 200 years. Some people believe that Thomas Jefferson created the dish. However, history shows that macaroni and cheese dates back even further and is not from North America. Wherever the recipe came from, it is delicious and fun to prepare. The following recipe is just one of many ways to make macaroni and cheese. ITEMS YOU WILL NEED: • 1 1/2 cups of macaroni noodles • 3 teaspoons of salt • 3 large eggs • 1 1/2 cups of milk • 3 cups of shredded cheddar cheese • 1 tablespoon of cooking oil • Water

KITCHEN TOOLS: • 1 large pot • 1 large baking dish • 2 mixing bowls, 1 large and 1 small • A fork • A strainer

For safety, remember to have an adult help you when using the stove and oven. WHAT TO DO: 1. Fill the large pot with water and 2 teaspoons of salt. Boil the noodles in the water until they are tender, about 8–10 minutes. 2. Rinse the noodles in cold water, and use a strainer to drain the water. 3. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Cover the bottom and sides of the baking dish with cooking oil so the noodles will not stick to the dish. 4. Mix the noodles and 1 1/2 cups of cheddar cheese in a large bowl. Pour the mixture into the baking dish. Add 1 1/2 cups of cheddar cheese on top. 5. Put the eggs, milk, and 1 teaspoon of salt in the small bowl. With a fork, mix these ingredients until they are blended. 6. Pour the milk and egg mixture over the top of the noodles and cheese. 7. Place the dish in the oven. Bake the macaroni and cheese dish for approximately 45 minutes.

Read the following passage and answer questions 10 through 11.

A Painting Full of Fun

1 Pieter Bruegel was a famous artist who lived in Europe five hundred years ago. He is well known for a painting called Children’s Games. People like this painting because it is bursting with fun. It shows how children in Pieter’s time amused themselves in a variety of ways. In all, there are about eighty games being played in the painting.

2 Children’s Games shows a busy street scene in a town long ago. There is a stream flowing around the edge of the town, and the street is a wide and open space. There are no cars, just horses and buggies, so there is plenty of room to play. There are about two hundred children in the painting. Some play in groups and others play alone. Many of the games in the painting date back to ancient times, and some of the games are still played today.

3 Children may know games like leapfrog, tug of war, and follow the leader, but what about tag, king of the hill, and hopscotch? These games are often played outdoors. Stop and think about the happy children in the painting. They seem to be enjoying their freedom in the fresh air and their games.

4 The games in the painting do not require children to spend money on extra materials. Instead, they use simple everyday objects like hats and sticks. A game might call for a hoop, a rope, a spinning top, some chalk, or even a barrel. Some games are played without any toys at all. For instance, one scene in the painting shows children turning somersaults inside the fence.

5 Even though Pieter Bruegel lived a long time ago, children today can learn an important lesson from what he painted. The painting shows us how little we need in order to enjoy ourselves. All children really need is one another. It’s not the toys or games that are found on store shelves that create fun. Using our imagination can do this for us.

Read the following passage and answer questions 12 through 12.

Desert Adaptations

1 When you first look at a desert it doesn’t look like anything could live there. All you see is miles and miles of sand. If you take time to look carefully, however, you will find many different kinds of plants and animals that have found ways to adapt, or adjust, to the harsh living conditions of the desert.

2 Camels have adapted to the desert by using the fat contained in their humps as a source of fluid for their bodies when they cannot find water. Camels also have long eyelashes to protect their eyes when sandstorms blow across the desert. Some desert animals burrow under the ground to stay cool during the day and only come out at night. Animals that seek their food at night are called nocturnal. Many desert mammals are nocturnal because they are warm-blooded and can overheat in the desert sun. Other desert animals, like reptiles, are cold blooded and actually need the heat of the sun to maintain their body temperature.

3 One major category of desert reptiles is lizards. They each have unique adaptations to help them survive. The chuckwalla lizard puffs itself up when it is frightened. Snakes and birds can't eat the chuckwalla when it is puffed up. Another defense some lizards have is that their tails break off. If a predator grabs the lizard’s tail, it comes off and the lizard can escape from being captured. Some lizards can even grow a new tail. Lizards will also run very fast to escape predators.

4 Lizards frequently have skin that matches the sand color so that it is hard for predators to see them. The horned toad, which is a type of lizard, has an additional feature that helps it protect itself. Spines cover its body like horns. They are hard and rough. Very few animals try to eat this lizard because of its spines.

5 Another unique reptile is the desert turtle. It only drinks once or twice a year, but it has sacs inside its body to store liquid for when it cannot find water. The desert turtle also has a unique mouth. Instead of teeth, it has jaws that are like small saws which cut up its food.

6 Kangaroo rats are rodents that search for food at night. They usually eat seeds,

Page 14: ENGL-4 Exam [E-TR786S] ALG Neff Questioning QuizALG Neff Questioning Quiz Exam not valid for Paper Pencil Test Sessions [Exam ID:TR786S A Great Gift Standing Tall 1 One hundred years

which contain small amounts of water. Kangaroo rats have small front legs and larger back legs, just like kangaroos, and they hop to move from place to place. The roadrunner is a bird that lives in desert areas. It also has strong legs and can run up to 20 miles an hour.

7 Plants in the desert have developed unique ways to store water. This is why many cactus plants are thick. The barrel cactus has only one stem. It is round like a barrel. Much water is stored in this stem. Animals make holes in this plant to get water or sap. A large cactus also has roots that grow just under the surface to capture as much rain as possible on the rare occasions that it does rain. Cactus stems are covered with a wax that helps the plants hold water. All cactus plants have prickles, or thorns, that help protect the plants.

8 Desert creatures and cacti show us what amazing things plants and animals can do in order to survive.

12 After she read the first paragraph, a student asked this question.

Which sentence from the story answers her question?

How can a plant survive without rain?

A Plants in the desert have developed unique ways to store water.

B Desert creatures and cacti show us what amazing things plants and animals can do in order to survive.

C All cactus plants have prickles, or thorns, that help protect the plants.

D Lizards frequently have skin that matches the sand color so that it is hard for predators to see them.
