Human BeingHuman Being
3 basic Themes under Human Being:
1. Culture2. Self-Discovery
3.The treatment of Women.
CultureCulture *A human being is shaped by Culture.
*Culture is universal in World Literature.*Culture distinct a Society from another.*Culture makes a human being unique.
*Culture is related to one’s religion in order to differentiate one another.
*In R.K.Narayan’s work The Guide, he stresses on the element of Culture based
on the Indian society.
• He brilliantly explains in his novel how the Indian culture shapes the characters in the
novel.• He strongly believes that Culture is important
in all his works. He says that a person is what his culture make him.
Islamic perspective on Islamic perspective on Culture.Culture.
• In Islam, it is important to respect another culture.
• In Islam, even though we are Muslims, we have different cultures.
• Muslims are taught since young to respect other people’s culture.
• However, only the positive ones are emulated.
Even the word Islam, س ل م brings the meaning of Peace.
In the Quran’ Allah states that :"...If God had willed, He would have made you all
in one nation and one religion), but that He (God) left you in different religions to compete in good
deeds and society benefits. The return of all of you is to God; then He (God) will inform you about that
in which you differ"
(Quran, Chapter 5, Verse 48) * Have due respect to every single Culture because from it we can show the world that
Islam is a religion for all.
Self-DiscoverySelf-DiscoveryThe spiritual discovery of the self
is importantSelf-discovery is vital in a human
being’s life because it enables them to self-evaluate themselves.
The material world has it’s weaknesses and the material world is human based.
Islamic Perspective onIslamic Perspective on self-Discovery self-Discovery
Islam asks it’s followers to always reflect on their daily lives, Self
Muhasabah. By discovering one’s self, we will be
able to improve our own life. A hadith once said:
“He who knows himself, knows his Lord”
By discovering our true self, we will be able to find the peace and tranquility in
our hearts.
“We will show them Our Signs in the universe and in their own
selves” (Chapter42 , Verse53)
This Quranic verse clearly points out that by looking into themselves,
human beings will be able to understand in depth about Islam and bring themselves closer to
Allah.
The treatment of WomenThe treatment of Women Women are Human Beings too.
The treatment that women receive in this world will always be debated.
Women fight for their rights and seldom do they achieve what they fight
for.The present world is slowly changing.
Women’s rights are given equal consideration and they are treated
with higher respect compared to the treatment that a woman received in
the 20th century.
But as the world is changing, some countries still do not recognise women’s right as a
human being. This happens especially in the rural areas and
some countries that are orthodox in their thinking.
In Che Husna Azhari’s short story Mariah, we can see how the men think of women as
being very submissive and they have to obey their husbands whether they like it or not.
This issue comes under the idea of Polygamy. Even when the Imam explains his intentions
to his wife Cik Yam that he wants to take a second wife, he already expects his wife to agree and he will still marry Mariah even if
she disagrees.

Women are highly regarded in Islam
Women’s status is uplifted during Prophet Muhammad’s time and it is
only during His time only that women are taken care of.
Women are highly regarded in Islam that there is a special
chapter on WomenSurah An-Nisa’.
Islam permits Polygamy BUT under a certain condition and the men are
allowed to practice Polygamy IF they are and will be able to be just
and fair to their wives.A husband is also someone whom a
wife can depend on and look up upon.
A woman can also destroy another woman because of her words.
In Mariah, Cik Nab is seen as the one who spreads rumours and
through this a woman is destroyed by another woman.
