    Topic: Globalization

Thesis Statement: Globalization has brought various positive and negative effects on factors such

as the economy, culture, politics, society, and environment.

    The Different Aspects of Globalization

Globalization is something that can be seen or encountered in a person6s everyday life as

it continues to gro1 and develop. Globalization can be defined as 7the gro1ing importance of

economic ties, innovations in transportation, and the revolution in communications8

!"eidenbaum, #$$%, p.iii&. It is 7the gro1ing integration of the 1orld, lining together into one

global 1hole 1hat had, heretofore, been independent activity centers all over the 1orld8 !Adams,

#$ p.%&. 'a(am describes globalization as the gro1ing internationalization, liberalization,

universalization, modernization, and deterritorialization of nations !'a(am, #$$)&. This can also

be seen as 7a 1orld in 1hich comple9 economic, political, social, and cultural processes operate

and interact 1ithout any influence of national boundaries and distance8 !Singh, #$$*, p.&.

/o1ever, globalization implies different things to different people. -ecause of its sub(ectivity, it

is neither good nor bad as it can be seen from different points of vie1 !ay, #$$)&.

According to "ells6s The Issue of Globalization- An Overview !#$&, the start of

globalization only became evident in the nineteenth century 1hen basic tools such as the

railroad, steamship, and telegraph 1ere already invented. In *, "orld "ar I broe out and

or 71aves.8 It is 1hen globalization shrins and vanishes after reaching its highest pea for a

particular period of time and once again rises to its pea after1ards. Today, people are living in a

highly globalized 1orld 1here almost everything is a product of globalization. This 1ould

include the things as small as a pencil, toothpaste, umbrella, and much more !p.=&.

Throughout time, people have been arguing on 1hether globalization has proved to be

more of a benefit or a disadvantage to society, but the ans1er to these arguments is the simple

concept of 1ho benefits from it and 1ho does not. According to Spare6s  Introducing

Globalization: Ties, Tensions, and Uneven Integration !#$%&, economists are most liely to be

in favor of globalization because this is beneficiary to the financial flo1s and maret shares of

the economy. -ecause of this, there 1ill be more investors investing into the maret, allo1ing

the country to gain more income and capital for greater improvements and pro(ects such as

bridges, overpasses, and high1ays. -usiness leaders, managers, and corporations are most liely

to be in favor of this as 1ell, since it creates ne1 opportunities for higher income and cash flo1s

through the e9panding of businesses and elimination of trade barriers. In addition, outsourcing,

placing one6s business in another country for cheaper labor and less e9penses is no1 made

possible because of globalization. 4or political scientists, global interdependency is an advantage

because it enables countries to help other countries in need of support. "hile sociologists focus

on the negative side of globalization such as overpopulation and the spreading of diseases,

anthropologists focus on the mi9ing of different culture and traditions. >ean1hile, geographers

are more concerned 1ith the transforming and connecting of lands and structures !pp. $ost people 1ould agree on globalization aiding the economy

and development of countries through international trade. "hile ra1 materials and agricultural

products are made available to countries lacing natural resources, finished goods and products

may be ac;uired by countries short of technological and human resources re;uired in the

production of these goods !Adams, #$&. Aside from allo1ing cash to flo1 freely from country

to country, globalization has also enabled the e9position of different cultures to different people.

This resulted to the emergence of ?apanese restaurants, -uddhist temples, American fast food

chains, and much more !"ells, #$$&. It is common no1ledge that the leaders of different

nations hold constant gatherings and meetings such as the A025 and AS2A' in host countries to

discuss about problems occurring 1ithin and outside of their respective nations. Through

globalization, political merging and interdependence is made possible !5ollins, #$+&. The social

1ellodern technologies such as those of transportation and

communication allo1ed people to travel great distances in short periods of time and maintain

connections even 1hen miles apart !"eidenbaum, #$$%&. -ecause of the ease in travel, social

security 1hich is usually concerned 1ith computer hacing, terrorism, and smuggling can result

!Tallman, #$$#&. Another distinct effect is the rapidity in the spreading of diseases and

environmental destruction such as AIDS, SAS, deforestation, industrial fishing, pollution,

littering, and global 1arming. !itzer, #$&.

A number of benefits are formed because of globalization, including the attaining of ne1

no1ledge and sills in order to produce products of better ;uality. -ecause of global

competition, business leaders are forced to eep alert for ne1 trends as 1ell as improve on the

;uality, creativity, and uni;ueness of their products !Tallman, #$$#&. It has also lessened the

unemployment rate as citizens may search for (obs and sources of livelihood by travelling to

countries lacing a particular type of human resource. 5onveniences lie the invention of the

airplane, automobile, Internet, and telephone are en(oyed by many because of globalization. In

the cultural point of vie1, different traditions are intermingling and mi9ing 1ith each other,

allo1ing people from different parts of the 1orld to understand and respect each other6s cultural

practices and beliefs !5ollins, #$+&. The increase of ne1 no1ledge and information is most

clearly seen through the illustration of an individual accessing the internet and ac;uiring data

from various 1orld1ide sources. In general, globalization allo1ed individuals to en(oy a better

lifestyle by providing a 1ider range of choices to choose from 1hether it be in the form of

tangible goods such as food, medicine, and clothing or intangible things lie no1ledge and faith

    !"ells, #$$&.

7"hat goes up, must come do1n.8 As globalization presents various benefits and

advantages, it also presents a number of negative effects lie the spreading of global riss such as

AIDS, SAS, and other transmittable diseases. International threats such as terrorism, global

    financial crisis, drugedia greatly affects

the people today, but it feeds many 1ith 1rong information and incorrect perceptions. An

e9ample 1ould be the perception of beauty< slim, tall, fair

chees. These traits mainly describe the features of an American or "estern 1oman, but the

reality is that one does not need to have these features in order to be beautiful !itzer, #$&.

The starting, developing, or discontinuing of globalization is largely impacted by

government decisions and policies. Therefore, one 1ay to improve the problems caused by

globalization is through good governance such as addressing the needs of the less fortunate aside

from merely listening to the voices of the rich and prominent figures of society. The government

should become more transparent and hold more accountability or responsibility on the after

    Topic: Depression

Thesis Statement: Depression is a problem that can negatively affect all types of people by

causing suicides and illnesses but it can be treated through medical or natural

solutions, depending on its type and severity.

    >ore than ?ust Sadness

Depression does not choose its victims no one is completely safe from its poison.

/o1ever, no1ing its causes, symptoms, types, riss factors, and cures can help individuals

avoid being snatched by its cla1s as 1ell as help people currently struggling 1ith them.

Depression is usually rooted on children6s unhappy childhood e9periences. In obbins6s

Understanding $e!ression  !#$$&, the concept of attachment developed by ?ohn -o1lby

described as 7a type of behavior in 1hich an individual maintains closeness !usually physical

nearness& 1ith another individual 1ho is perceived as more capable of dealing 1ith the 1orld8

!p.)3& 1as deemed as another root cause of depression. This concept 1as proven by the

observations of ?ohn -o1lby and ene Spitz during the Second "orld "ar 1here children

separated from their mothers for a prolonged period of time tend to become angry as they later

on start to sho1 signs of distress. "hen their protests 1ere not given any attention, these

children became detached, no longer seeing for the adults6 care and attention. In the long run,

these children may develop depression !obbins, #$$&.

Depression is a more severe version of everyday sadness and disappointments. It can be

caused by genetic factors and passed from parents to offspring. It can also be induced by medical

conditions, and psychological factors including: stress, abuse, neglect, trauma, and loss of a

loved one. /o1ever, most cases of depression develop due to early childhood e9periences such

as being neglected or physically and mentally abused by one6s parents or other paragons !Gotlib

/ammen, #$$&. Signs or symptoms of depression include: agitation, restlessness, irritability,

anger, 1ithdra1al, isolation, fatigue, hopelessness, 1orthlessness, loss of interest, changes in

appetite, and thoughts of death or suicide !-erger, #$%&.

According to Smith and Saison, there are four main types of depression categorized by

their severity namely ma(or depression, dysthymia !mild depression&, bipolar disorder !e9treme

happiness or e9treme sadness&, and seasonal affective disorder !inconsistent depression& !Smith

    Saison, #$+&. /o1ever, >onica6s Get Out of $e!ression: The #ays to a %a!!y &ife states

that there are seven ma(or types of depression including: atypical depression !reoccurring

depression&, psychotic depression !separation from reality&, melancholic depression !e9treme

sadness&, and postpartum depression !hormoneonica, #$+&.

Depression may cause many individuals tend to thin and act hastily or irrationally. Some

may even consider taing their o1n lives, thining that the only 1ay out of their problems is

through suicide. /o1ever, suicide is not a solution to any problem, since it only adds more

problems to the e9isting problem. 'ot only does it end one6s life and opportunity to accomplish

great things, it also causes e9treme grief and sorro1 to the victim6s loved ones. Thus, the

1arning signs of suicide such as purposelessness, an9iety, trapped feelings, hopelessness,

1ithdra1al, anger, rage, revenge seeing feelings, reclessness, and dramatic mood changes

must be 1atched out for !Gotlib /ammen, #$$&.

    According to De0aulo and /orvitz6s Understanding $e!ression: #hat #e 'now and

#hat (ou )an $o About It !#$$#&, depressed individuals going through long periods of stress are

most liely to develop migraines, severe throbbing headaches that may cause bright and flashing

dots to float in front of the eyes. In some cases, people suffering from migraines also develop

neurological impairments including the difficulty to spea and see properly !De0aulo

/ortivitz, #$$#&. According to studies conducted by the /arvard >edical School, depressed

patients are more liely to have cardiovascular illnesses caused by the tightening of blood vessels

and increasing of blood pressure such as chest pain, heart attac, and stroe. Fther physical

problems may include: body aches, pain, obesity due to overeating, and anore9ia due to loss of

appetite. Fn the other hand, mental problems include the difficulty to concentrate, comprehend,

and mae decisions !0ietrangelo, #$*&. Aside from these, depression also affects one6s actions

and 1ay of life. In some cases, depressed patients result to alcohol and drugs in order to feel

temporary happiness as they escape from reality. /o1ever, alcoholism and drug addiction6s

negative effects may cause e9treme damage to the body, especially the liver. An overdose of such

may even lead to one6s une9pected death !obbins, #$$&.

Today6s advance sciences and technologies allo1ed the clinical illness, depression, to be

studied and given a number of solutions. /o1ever, the recovering of a depressed patient not only

re;uires the involvement of medical e9perts, but also the cooperation and support of families,

friends, and loved ones. 4or severely depressed patients, hospitalization may be necessary,

especially if the 1arning signs of suicide are very prevalent. This 1ay, supervision and security

are readily available to prevent the patient from devising a strategy in taing his o1n life. Drug
