Black is Beautiful (Morrison Video)

• A cultural movement that took place most prominently in the 60’s, as part of the black power movement, which strove to make black Americans totally and unapologetically proud of their heritage and culture.

• “Black is Beautiful” was the slogan coined to assault ideals of beauty generated in white society that excluded and devalued the physical features of African Americans.

• Large numbers of black women stopped chemically straightening their hair, wearing their hair with its natural texture.

Sociological TermsCulture: A system of shared and learned beliefs created by the members of a

social system which act as guideline for behavior within that social system.

Value General, abstract conceptions or ideas of the desirable which act as ultimate guidelines for behavior in the group. Values contain the explanations for why a given kind of behavior is “good” or “beneficial.”

Norm Specific guidelines for behavior existing within a group which suggest or dictate how to act in particular situations.

Social Artifact: Any product of social beings or their behavior. Examples include: books, newspapers, paintings, poems, automobiles, pottery, jokes, buildings, songs, photos,

etc.

Gender Refers to the attitudes, feelings, and behaviors that a given culture associates with a person’s biological sex.

Sex Refers to a person’s biological status and is typically categorized as male, female, or intersex.
