Noticing LanguageWhat is wrong with the following paragraph? How could it be improved? Talk to a partner for 2 minutes.

Many nutrition experts believe the School Lunch Program can be fixed. It will require healthy food. It will require cooks. It will require kitchens to prepare it. More money will only create a larger junk-food distribution system. We need to scrap the current system. We need to start from scratch. Washington needs to give schools enough money to cook unprocessed food. Washington needs to give schools enough money to serve unprocessed foods. The food should be produced without pesticides. The food should be produced without chemical fertilizers. The food should be locally grown.

Rhetorical Grammar Activity 2

Rhetorical Precis• A short concise, but informative summary of a text.• Useful for research purposes.

Sentence 1• Note the name of the author, the genre and title of the

work, and publication date in parentheses; a rhetorically accurate verb, and a that clause containing the major assertion or thesis statement of the work.

Example: In the article, “Attacking the Obesity Epidemic by First Figuring Out Its Cause,” (September 12, 2011), Jane Brody informs readers of the causes of the obesity epidemic, and she proposes that Americans solve the epidemic in the same way that widespread smoking was curbed.

Sentence 2• An explanation of how the author develops and
