By engaging with a story on a deep and interactive level, you will experience an enriched understanding of your novel. This project is a chance for you to show me what you know about the theme, characters and plot of your novel on a deeper interpretive level. Learning Objectives that must be shown in your project 1. Show understanding of the plot of novel AND a deeper interpretation (must go beyond the literal meaning of the story). 2. Focus on a theme, character, symbolism or mixture of the three. 3. Support your ideas with detailed examples from the novel. 4. Include at least three key quotes from the novel. Suggested Project Choices: All projects must include a 200 word paragraph explaining how your project illustrates the key elements of your novel such as character, theme or symbolism; this paragraph will be how I assess your project. 1. Begin by studying some of the important scenes of your novel which reveal who the character is. You profile must show a confident understanding of who the character is, using what others say about him/her and what he/she says or does. The news feed could also retell the story by showing what groups they joined, status updates, photo albums, quizzes etc.

English 9 Name: _______________Literature Circle Project

Due Date: __________________ /20 marks

Research indicates that students can find more success in education if they are given alternatives to traditional assessment. By engaging with a story on a deep and interactive level, you will experience an enriched understanding of your novel. This project is a chance for you to show me what youknow about the theme, characters and plot of your novel on a deeper interpretive level.

Learning Objectives that must be shown in your project

1. Show understanding of the plot of novel AND a deeper interpretation (must go beyond the literal meaning of the story).

2. Focus on a theme, character, symbolism or mixture of the three.3. Support your ideas with detailed examples from the novel. 4. Include at least three key quotes from the novel.

Suggested Project Choices:

All projects must include a 200 word paragraph explaining how your project illustrates the key elements of your novel such as character, theme or symbolism; this paragraph will be how I assess your project.

1. Poster: Facebook Profile: Create a poster in the form of a Facebook profile for one of the characters in the play. Begin by studying some of the important scenes of your novel which reveal who the character is. You profile must show a confident understanding of who the character is, using what others say about him/her and what he/she says or does. The news feed could also retell the story by showing what groups they joined, status updates, photo albums, quizzes etc.

2. Poem/ Rap/Song: Write a 30-40 line long poem/song/rap that retells the story of your novel or is a response to your novel. Pairs. Higher marks will be awarded for: -Incorporating powerful words/lines right out of the story-Staying true to the details of plot, character-Shows an understanding of themes-Uses devices such as alliteration, personification, hyperbole, metaphors, similes, etc. - Should be typed

3. Graphic Novel/Comic Book/Children’s book: Choose the most important scenes (or one scene in detail)—in your view—and tell the story of your novel. The quality of your project will be determined by the following: the extent to which your graphic novel includes the entire story of the story, the quality/effort put into the artwork, and the inclusion of an introduction wherein you explain what you tried to capture in your recreation of the play (e.g. “I wanted to emphasize _____________ ‘s greed and ambition . . .” ) and why the scenes you picked were the most important in the novel (Ie: this scene set the mood because…, this scene reflected the theme….., this scene developed this character in this way…) Words should accompany the graphics.

4. Board Game: Make a board game that captures key plot details and reflects aspects of character, theme etc.5. Make a CD Soundtrack for the story. Make a 5 song mix for your novel. You need to print out the lyrics for each song and each song requires a paragraph in-depth description as to why you think it should be on a soundtrack for the play, using evidence from the themes, symbols and situations that your novel explored. Back up your ideas using SPECIFIC examples from the novel and the song. Create a cover for your CD that uses images, symbols and quotes that are important in the novel. Be sure to assemble your CD in chronological order.

orCreate a collection of at least 5 poems that connect with the novel. Be sure to include the poem, title and author. Explain why, as the editor of the collection, you have chosen these particular poems (1 paragraph for each).

6. Chose a theme(s) of the play and create a collage of quotes, events, images and symbols that relate to the theme(s) of the novel. If you are knowledgeable in Photoshop you could take a picture of your collage and use Photoshop as an element in the collage.

7. EXPAND A THEME: In a visual form, show examples of one of the novel’s themes. The examples should come both from your novel AND examples outside your novel such as real life examples (newspaper clippings, articles etc), other stories (summaries, excerpts), poems or songs and visuals. This may be done as a poster, a power point, a speech or through any other medium. – include a paragraph that explains how your examples reflect your particular theme.

9. Billboard: Create an artistic ad for the book; include key quotes and pictures to visually represent important themes, moments or symbols in the novel.

10. Extension Narrative: Write an epilogue to the story you just read. What happens next? Why? How does it fit in with what actually happened in the novel? Make sure that you write in the same style as your novel. OR write a new ending to your novel.

11. Character Scrapbook/Memory box/Timecapsule: Compile a scrapbook of memorabilia that your character might have collected or come across during the story. Every artifact must be captioned with where he or she got it, its significance to her/him, and the page # you found it on. Think of the images that keep recurring in the novel, the places they go, and anything she/he might collect (it could be something from a secondary character).

12. Podcast or “radio-play”. Take a key scene from the novel and re-create it with voices, sound effects and music. Add visual elements if you like and download to your ipod.

13. Video: Take a key scene or make a promotional video for your novel that highlights your understanding of the key elements of the novel.

14. Interpretive Dance: Choreograph a dance that represents the key parts of your novel. Movement, costume and musical selection will all play a role in expressing your understanding of the ideas in your novel.

15. Flash-Animation or Comic-Life Project: If you are comfortable with technology then consider using one of these programs to show your understanding.
