Although Al Nakhil Paper Industries Company Ltd. only started its commercial activity in 1996 as the first integrated factory in the Middle East to produce carbonless copy paper, yet the idea to establish the factory was born three years earlier. The idea reflected the Al Khorayef Group strategy to diversify into numerous industrial and commercial areas and to decrease the dependency on the Agricultural Section.

It was really tempting at that time to invest in the carbonless paper field because there was a remarkable increase in the global demand, prices and profit. This wouldn�t last long as there was some other alternative paper available at the market and the competition of the electronic billing (as billing is considered to be one of the main usages of carbonless paper). As a result of such competition which led to a decrease of demand for carbonless paper, the competition went up and the prices went down.

Al Nakhil was unlucky to start its business in such atmosphere, but managed to face and overcome such difficulties with the help of God and the unlimited support from Al Khorayef Group. Al Nakhil started to achieve acceptable results by reframing its business and focusing on the commercial sector of the business. Now Al Nakhil is not only considered to be the company with the biggest share in Saudi market, but also in the neighboring countries like Kuwait and Jordan. Al Nakhil has acquired 60% from these markets, and managed to be the second largest paper trader in Saudi Arabia.

This of course is considered to be a big achievement for such a young company. That�s of course a result of high standard services, quality, competitive prices and commitment to customers by treating them as partners.

The printing industry in Saudi Arabia is enjoying good times as all related indications are positive, such as population growth, the development of packing & packaging industries and the increase of the volume of demand of advertisement which of course will increase the demand of paper consumption. In addition to the increase of literacy rate which have a positive impact on printing and publishing.

Such indications make us optimistic about the future of the paper industry, and create opportunities of growth by utilizing our experience and reputation with existing customers. In addition, we are working hard to introduce new products by applying new technology to minimize cost and achieve higher level of flexibility, so we invested in a tenting machine to produce the colors of our choice instead of importing it. Al Nakhil has also successfully tested some new products to be used in packaging industry.

We are proud of being ISO certified company since the year 2000, and we have also achieved a good percentage of Saudi working force which consists of 34% of which some are working in the production department.

Finally, although we were unable to achieve satisfactory financial results, still we are proud of our achievements in growth and market position, and believe this will be our true foundation for our future.

Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Abdullah Alkhorayef, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Alkhorayef Group of Companies (AGC), received an official invitation from HE Amado Towmani Turi, President of the Republic of Mali, to visit Mali, during the reception of Sheikh Abdulrahman Alkhorayef to Mr. Nanconti Diyakiti, the Ambassador of the Republic of Mali to

the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in his office on the 17th of Ramadan 1425H.

They discussed the fields of investment in Mali during the cordial talks. Mr. Bajan Somano, the Consultant in Mali Embassy, and colleague Mohammed Abdulwahab, Office Manager of the Chairman of AGC�s Board of Directors attended the meeting.

At the expense of sons of Abdullah Ibrahim Alkhorayyef, the Grand Mosque at the Immigrants charity Center was built to hold together Minissa Province Muslims of Ethiopia from Qudsa city and the nearby villages and countryside.

Muhammad Hussein Timo, the General Director of the Center reports that area of the Grand Mosque is 20 x 22 meters which accommodates 16 lines of prayers, around 45 persons each. The total capacity of the mosque is around 750 prayers, besides the women section.

Last Ramadan, the Mosque was densely occupied during Taraweeh prayers, especially with women, because it is the biggest mosque in the area.

In addition to this mosque, the Charity Center launches many distinguished activities the most important of which is teaching. There are 8 classrooms holding 70 male and female students. The total enrollment is 563 male and female students.

Besides the Arabic Language Section, study has already started in the intermediate stage of the Academic Section.

The Interior Security Forces Officers� Club witnessed a celebration on the occasion of the inauguration of the awareness film (Masalik Al-Mahalik) produced at the expense of Alkhorayef Group of Companies.

During the ceremony Major General Saad Al-Tuwajri, Director General of Civil Defense, awarded a memorial shield to Alkhorayef Group of Companies in appreciation to its role in the production of this awareness film and its contribution to the efforts of the Civil Defense towards achieving a secure and stable community.

The Training Department of Alkhorayef Group (AG) has informed all AG�s employees who wish to join the training courses that will be organized by the Training Dept. to submit their applications for registration through the electronic registration program recently prepared and applied as of the first of September 2004.

The Training Dept. has also emphasized that no candidate will be admitted unless he submits his application through the above-mentioned program.

It is worth mentioning that this program has been

designed based on the suggestions of AG�s employees and claims they have submitted to the Human Resources Dept. through the satisfaction questionnaire forms they filled in 2003.

Dear smoker, this is a short message for you from the heart of a loving, caring, kind and benevolent brother who wishes you success in this life and the hereafter. I am worried about the cigarette that squirts out its venom each day in your body, which is badly in need of useful materials. I beseech Allah the Almighty to make you listen to my words with attentive ears and a good heart.

No doubt, you are aware of the epidemic that spread among a significant section of the society. Some smokers suffer heart stroke and others pneumonia, chronic coughing and cancer. The cigarette, which causes these diseases and pains, contains hundreds of the toxic chemical elements. Here are some of them:

Nicotine: is a toxic alkaline substance included in the tobacco. The medical researches confirmed that four drops of nicotine are enough to kill a big rabbit. Nicotine affects the nervous system, blood vessels and leads to the narrowing of blood vessels of the heart. Nicotine is also an effective element in several insecticides.

Carbon monoxide: it forms during the slow burning process of tobacco and cigarette papers. The medical researches proved the presence of a big amount of this toxic gas in the smokers� bodies. It is the main cause for the lack of oxygen in the tissues, especially the tissues of the heart muscle. It also damages the tissues and depletes the vitality of glands, irritates the mucous membrane of the mouth and trachea, and it is the main cause for lung cancer.

Nitrogen oxide: it affects the efficacy of the breath lashes covering the tracheas, irritates them, and increases the excretions of the mucous membrane of tracheas. This leads to the enlargement of the lymphatic glands in the tracheas and change in the type of the mucous excretion (sputum).

Tar: is a black gum material, basically used in the painting materials industry and road asphalting. It is composed of few thousand solid chemicals. The laboratory experiments proved the link of these materials with the heart diseases, blood circulation, and lung diseases. It also has a destructive cancerous effect on the lungs, which is known to cause the chronic disability or death.

Ammonia gas: it stings and leads to the build up of the yellow layer on the tongue surface and hurts the taste glands on it. It increases saliva excretion and irritates coughing and exposes a person to the frequent infection with cold, irritation of mouth, throat and pharynx.

the danger of a cigarette? Haven�t you read the Quranic verses, which say: � He allows them the good things and prohibits the bad ones). Sure, you have read them but there is a psychological barrier preventing you from taking the right decision to quit smoking. You think the cigarette is not a bad thing as other non-smokers regard it.

Therefore let us presume the following scenario. One day while you were entering your house and holding a full bag of candies, your six-year son hurried to you. You kissed him and he put his hand in the bag and took a piece of candy. Would you prevent or allow him, especially when you saw his face beaming with happiness? The answer is well known to everyone. But the question is: what if your son instead of doing so puts his hand in your pocket inadvertently, produces the packet of cigarette, puts a cigarette between his two little fingers and about to do exactly what you always do, what do you do?

The answer: no doubt the parental kindness would emerge vigorously and you would not allow your child to smoke. Why do you prevent him? Because you realize the terrible damage of smoking. Hence, you agree with me that smoking is bad and prohibited according to the previous verses of the Holy Quran.

A Pose for Contemplation How beautiful is to isolate yourself

from people in a quiet place, relax, relieve your mind of all thoughts and ask yourself the following questions: how long have I been smoking? What benefits have I got from smoking? What

have I lost? Then compare the benefits and losses to see the unexpected awful result?

Dear smoker, Here are some guidelines that help you, God willing, to quit smoking:- Beseech Allah Almighty to help

you quit smoking and feel that you are doing a religiously prohibited thing.

- Fix a certain day in which you quit smoking.

- Take plenty of liquids, more rest and avoid exhaustion.

- Remember that failure to quit smoking occurs in the first or second week where the symptoms are severe and your body is still used to nicotine.

- Tell one of the non-smoking family members or friends about your determination to quit smoking and the date you fixed. Ask him to help you achieve your goal.

- Get rid of all types of cigarettes, ashtrays, lighters and all things that remind you of smoking.

- Stay away from smokers and their gatherings.

- Occupy yourself in the first days after quitting smoke in practicing sports and other jobs.

- Remember that smoking a cigarette can ruin your efforts and render them futile.

- Occupy your hand with the tooth cleanser � Miswak� or count the rosary.

- Take a cup of apple juice or orange daily after breakfast. It reduces the desire to smoke.

- See the nearest smoke-combating clinic for assistance.Finally, dear smoker, respond

to the call of your Creator, which your always need, and remember the following verses of the Holy Quran: �Oh believers, respond to Allah and the messenger if he calls you for what makes you alive, and know that Allah intervenes between a person and his heart and that you will be resurrected.�

Please, ask for the aid of Allah, do more supplications and take the bravest decision in your life by bidding the cigarette, which made you and your family a lot of troubles, farewell forever. Also know that Allah Almighty is with �the pious and philanthropic.� And he who leaves something for fear of Allah, Allah will compensate for him. May Allah grant success to all and help them achieve every good deed.

In Prince Abdulrahman Al-Sudeiri�s Hospital in Skaka, HRH Prince Fahd ibn Badr ibn Abdulaziz, Prince of Al-Jouf Area inaugurated the Alkhorayyef Charity Center for Renal Maladies which was built by Alkhorayyef Group of Companies.

Upon arrival to the headquarters, HRH was received by HE Sheikh Abdulrahman ibn Abdullah Alkhorayyef, Chairman of the Board of Directors for AGC, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah , Chairman of the Board of Directors for Saudi Installment

Center and then toured it.The Charity Center for Renal

Maladies started operation on 10.1.1423. It had taken 18 months to build on a plot of around 1200 square meters and was implemented with the latest specifications and measurements with a total cost of about six million Saudi Riyals that included the buildings, medical facilities, office supplies and furniture, in addition to fees of the consultation offices and amounts of the maintenance contracts.

The Center has a ward for men and another for women and children. It provides all the services the patient may need. There are 30 beds for in-patients, and as many as 53 patients of both sexes can benefit from its services. It includes medical clinics, rooms for patients and a quarantine room for men and another for women. There are also waiting parlors, drawing rooms for patients and medical lounges, in addition to offices for the staff and warehouses. The Center has annexes that include the water treatment plant, maintenance warehouses, office for the medical maintenance and rooms for electricity.

At Al Nakhil Paper Company, new coating technology has unveiled exciting opportunities in the packaging industry and in particular the corrugated and fold-ing carton markets. These industries are large consumers of barrier coated liner boards for detergent boxes, frozen foods, fruit and vegetables etc.

Barrier coatings create a waterproof covering on paper and board and in recent years this technology has advanced to water-based coatings where the required barrier properties can be achieved without the need for polyethylene. This advance-ment means that the coatings can be applied on high speed coating machines whereas before it had to be done using a plastic extrusion method previously used for these applications. These special coat-ings will provide a barrier against pen-etration of water, moisture, grease, oil, etc. The coatings carry FDA approval for direct food contact and are also widely used in frozen foods, French fries cartons, microwave meals, etc.

Market research has shown that there is significant existing demand for these special paper grades in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries and the company has witnessed a very positive response from the market place to the possibility of a domestic producer.

Premium brand detergents such as OMO, PERSIL, and ARIEL are produced with a barrier coated liner board on the inside layer of the box � this is required in order to prevent moisture from penetrat-ing the box and causing clumping of the powder inside. Currently the producers are using a polyethylene coated liner to achieve this protection and these liner boards are imported. Al Nakhil is cur-rently working towards achieving formal product approval from the respective par-ent companies such as Proctor & Gamble, Unilever, and Henkel � the main sup-pliers of branded detergents and other household goods on a global scale. Al-though this procedure is a slow process,

when approved supplier status is achieved, the opportunities for the company to exploit are very exciting.

Successful production trials of various products have already been completed and several products have since been accept-ed by the market. Barrier coated liner board has been supplied to a major corrugating company in Saudi Arabia which was used for boxes containing frozen fish and shrimps and the feedback from the customer was very positive.

Further market research is ongoing and this research is re-lated to food packaging. Many common products - release liners for labels, quick service restau-rant packaging, frozen foods, and meat and pet food packag-ing - all use barrier or functional coatings. Of major concern for many products is that any barrier coating used must have food con-tact approval, minimal migration, and be organoleptically inert (no transfer of taste or odour).

An international agency reviewed the major markets for barrier coating, noting that de-mand has been driven by several end use market trends, including the growth in convenience foods, fast food and ready to eat meals. This has driven development of innovative packaging, particular-ly for packages destined for �big box stores,� which now account for more than 50 percent of what is sold in retail.

The challenge for package designers is that there is no ideal barrier coating. Wax, which is widely used in poultry packaging and other wet food packaging is hard to recycle. Wax adversely affects recycled fibre strength and makes the box slippery. Plastic, such as polyethylene, is also very difficult to recycle and is a relatively slow and messy process when compared to a high

speed aqueous coating machine.

Major market segments include corrugated contain-ers, folding cartons, bags and sack, food service and conven-ience packaging, liquid packaging, and indus-trial and protective packaging. In bags and sacks, a big ap-plication is pet food packaging, with the common microwave popcorn bag a common household product that has a functional or barrier coating.

A big market developed in recent years for paper and board packaging has been quick service restaurants (commonly referred to as fast food) such as McDon-alds, Burger King, etc. This mar-ket shifted from Styrofoam to use of a wide array of paper-based products, including laminated sandwich wraps and micro-flute boxes.

The domestic market is very buoyant with several large pro-ducers of corrugated boxes in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. Similarly, the food packaging industry is also substantial with various large producers of fold-ing cartons showing keen interest in these new products.

These new opportunities will

assist Al Nakhil achieve opti-mum capacity utilisation with the specialised coating plant currently utilised for carbon-less paper production. The new products will not interfere with, nor adversely affect current op-erations and therefore will not have any negative impact on the company�s current customer base within the printing industry.

AIA�s Participation:In the Peking Agricultural Exhibition

If we refer to the management books written in English the word �Manager� is a name derived from �Manage� i.e. to manage and �Management� means administration. In the English language the word �Management� does not bear more than one meaning which is �planning, organizing, supervising or controlling and decision taking in order to reach or achieve the establishment�s goals� with the above mentioned tools and not by the Machiavellian techniques.

In the Arabic language the word �Management� bears more than one meaning, some of them we have already mentioned above. The other meaning is �turning back.� It also has the meaning of managed, to manage, manager, going around or having a round shape i.e. �beating around the bush.�

If turning back aims to organize or reorganize, this means we are still in the heart of the subject and within the context of the first explanation of management. But if turning back aims to withdraw and give up a position or certain place, this means �withdrawal or retreat�, not in the religious or political meanings, but in the management concept.

The word turned, to turn, i.e.�turn back� in the Arabic language precedes the word �manage� i.e. organize, supervise, plan, etc. This explains the reason behind the spread of swiveled chairs in the managers� offices, which enable them to turn their backs to those talking to them or ignore a certain subject when they intend to escape it. It is always said that some managers sit at a round table, why? Because the globe is round and they can turn around with it. Someone may say: � Go away. You have made us dizzy.� I reply: �Be patient. Around what am I going around? Is there no word that precedes the word � management� in the Arabic language and means planning, organizing, supervising or controlling and decision taking?� Yes, it is there! Where do the words �leadership�, �sponsor� and �look after� go? We say someone looked after the camels, family and nation. We also say he led the camels, family and nation. And in the tradition, Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) says: �you are all sponsors and all of you are responsible for what you sponsor.�

In the festivals and happy occasions, especially the sportive ones, people say: �The opening is sponsored by so-and- so or the official sponsor is the company of so-and-so.� The sponsorship here means planning, organizing, supervising or controlling; and these are the elements of management.

Can we destroy this special and new meaning in the Arabic language represented by the word �management� and look for another term that does not bear two meanings and void of the function of �beating around the bush?�

The role of the MIS department in most businesses is to provide various information and statistics to managers of the company. In this role MIS staffs are not generally involved in subsequent decision-making and so they see little benefit from their work in real terms.

The weaknesses within the current MIS system in most businesses today are many and varied however these weaknesses are not all found within the actual department itself. Some managers may not be aware of the level of information that is available and this can lead to time wasted by the manager doing further analysis by himself outside of the MIS department.

In most cases, managers from different departments have different requirements and this leads to non-standard reports being created on an individual basis. This can lead to atomised information being scattered throughout the company. Due to this atomised system of the manager�s demands, the load on the MIS department can be high which also leads to delays in report generation. This can be very damaging to a business if the delayed reports have little value when they are eventually available.

In other cases, there are simply too many reports given to department managers who did not request them and they do not use them. This is seen as a major flaw in the current MIS method as the department manager spends too much time trying to extract information that he does need.

Additionally, there are department managers who have difficulty in transferring information to others and this can result in certain individuals being relied upon too heavily which of course can weaken any business.

Decision Support System (DSS) is a new system that has evolved in recent years in order to improve on the previous weaknesses and has been successfully adopted in progressive businesses.

DSS is a method of improving and co-ordinating within the MIS department however with further responsibilities at managerial level. These added responsibilities are designed specifically to assist in the overall decision-making process of the management team both individually and collectively.

It is known that most MIS departments have skilled staff who are typically experienced in data analysis and decision-making techniques. The DSS method further utilises these skills by enhancing the role of the MIS department and creates further added value from this very important area.

An effective DSS will assist managers in decision-making, particularly high and medium level management, by providing information that is classified, easy to understand quickly, and relative. It also provides senior managers with relevant information relating to risk assessment in big decisions.

An additional benefit from an effective DSS is that it will create standardised reports relevant to all the managers which are easily available in a centralised location within the company. These reports will be created following detailed discussions and input from the department managers themselves which will also encourage them to rely on the system. The active involvement will assist the manager to obtain the information he really needs quickly.

The DSS method involves the MIS department in the report generation and distribution, however also includes them in the decision-making process and follow-up with clear responsibilities relating to action plans etc.

The success of DSS can only be achieved through inter-department co-operation from the appropriate managers and teamwork is the key to its success. Senior management at Al Nakhil Paper Co. recognised the added value of the Decision Support System and are now working towards implementing the new methods internally.

The Management Team at Al Nakhil are moving forward in DSS as part of the overall AlKhorayef Group objective with regard to the full implementation of the ERP business solution. The DSS method will sit perfectly within the new system.

Mr. Mahmoud Shorbatgi, is promoted and transferred to Alkhorayef International Company as Marketing Manager for East Asia Markets. He spent 22 years in Alkhorayef Group of Companies. Congratulations.
