English Indices of Deprivation
• The English Indices of Deprivation measure relative levels of deprivation in 32,844 small areas or neighbourhoods, called Lower-layer Super Output Areas, in England
Headlines: National and London
• Nationally 88% of the neighbourhoods that are in the most deprived in 2019 were also the most deprived according to the IMD 2015.
• Deprivation is dispersed across England. 61% of LA districts contain at least one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in England.
• Many London boroughs have seen a reduction in the proportions of their neighbourhoods that are highly deprived from the last IMD in 2015.
• 7/10 LA districts with the highest levels of income deprivation among older people are in London
Headlines: Lewisham
• In relative terms Lewisham has become less deprived since 2015. It is now ranked 63rd most deprived LA, compared to 48th in 2015, 31st in 2010 and 39th for 2007.
• However, relative to London, Lewisham has become more deprived moving from 10th most deprived to 7th.
• 50% of Lewisham’s most deprived LSOAs in 2019 were the most deprived in 2015, compared to 88% for the whole of England
• Crime has seen the biggest improvement in ranking
• Barriers to Housing & Services has seen the worse decline in ranking
