FIRST, WHAT ARE THE SIMILARITIES?

Both classes offer engaging, challenging learning environments that highlight skills needed to be a lifelong reader and writer.

Both classes are committed to summer reading opportunities.

IS HONORS ELA RIGHT FOR MY STUDENT?

Is your student an intrinsically motivated self-starter?

Does your student have a passion for reading and writing? (He/she does both on his/her own for pleasure)

Can your student commit to extended summer reading requirements, longer and more challenging reading selections during the school year, and more frequent and complex writing assignments?

Does your student want to pursue Advanced Placement courses in the future?

WHAT IS AP? (ADVANCED PLACEMENT)

A rigorous course of ELA study with challenging texts and frequent essay writing.

An AP exam may be taken for potential college credit.

AP is only offered during the junior and senior years.

A WORD ABOUT SUMMER READING

ELA I: (one book)

Students will choose a book appropriate to their reading level - one which they have not read previously. The choice is personal and will evolve around strong student identification with the book’s characters, themes, and/or plot.

Note: parents are encouraged to assist students with their summer reading choice so as to ensure appropriate reading level and subject matter as noted.

Honors ELA I: (two books)

Students will choose a book appropriate to their reading level - one which they have not read previously. The choice is personal and will evolve around strong student identification with the book’s characters, themes, and/or plot.

Note: parents are encouraged to assist students with their summer reading choice so as to ensure appropriate reading level and subject matter as noted.

In addition, students will be required to read The Chosen, by Chaim Potok. This novel offers a look at coming of age in conflicting cultures, and the unique relationships of friends as they seek to find their place in the world.
