PROJECT ENGLISH

David Vanderpool, MD, founder and CEO of Mobile Medical Disaster Relief (MMDR), quickly mobilized a medical team upon hearing the news of the earthquake. The team headed to Haiti on January 14, 2010. MMDR, a 501(C)(3) humanitarian organization, provides basic goods and medical services to the poor of this world through the building and/or funding of medical clinics or hospitals. In large scale disasters we provide “first responder” medical and logistical support. Between disasters, MMDR implements micro-enterprise projects, provides clean water initiatives, develops vocational schools, and maintains the goal of building and/or funding at least one hospital or clinic per year. We are presently in fourteen world-wide locations including Haiti, Honduras, Mozambique, Nigeria, India, China, Ukraine, Iraq, Kenya, Gaza, Peru, Guatemala, and the United States. MMDR is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of business and civic leaders who are active in the ongoing work of the organization.

DEFINING THE SITUATION

As Haiti continues to struggle following the January 12, 2010 earthquake, the people of Haiti are desperately in need of positive outlets that will help them be filled with a bit of hope while bringing them up out of the depression and stress that envelopes their country.

MMDR began to offer English classes on Tuesday evenings during the team!s June, 2010 trip. Several hundred eager students showed up. By the time the July team arrived, the number of excited students had nearly doubled. The Haitians wanted to be part of this positive learning experience. Learning English gives a sense of hope and positive self-worth to the Haitians who attend the MMDR English classes.

PROJECT ENGLISH - MMDR!S GOAL

MMDR would like to continue this worthwhile project, producing enough English curriculum for all who want to be a part of the class. The smiles on the faces of the students as they accomplish a simple greeting in English are inspiring for the teachers and the students. Tuesday evenings tend to be one of the only times when students of all ages are found laughing and learning in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. Many of the students are heard saying, “I love English.”

MMDR has designed curriculum for beginner English learners as well as for advanced students who already know a bit of English.

In order for the English curriculum to be taught in several locations in and around Port-au-Prince, MMDR wants to produce and ship 1,000 additional English notebooks which will be assembled by MMDR volunteers. We want 1,000 more Haitians to benefit from the positive and useful focus produced by this project.

PROJECT ENGLISH

IN SUMMARY

The delight of seeing Haitians filled with the joy of learning is a heart warming contrast to the depression and stress that has overwhelmed them since the January 12th earthquake. Each Haitian sees their English notebook as a precious gift. The lessons in English are truly valuable to each Haitian, and students leave class with a renewed sense of worth. Project English costs very little for its great return. The class gives important focus and provides a positive activity for the students throughout the week as they practice their English together.

Because of caring and generous partners, MMDR will be able to continue this unique and valuable project for the people of Haiti who are seeking a better future for themselves.

Thank you for your consideration of this imperative need.
