I really enjoyed the Bridge course here in CardiffUniversity. I attended the course from Septemberto June. It really helped me to prepare both for

academic skills and IELTS. Regarding the former,not only could I practise academic writing andprepare presentations, but also I was given goodfeedbacks that really helped to improve.Concerning the latter, the classes are wellorganized and improve all the skills required tosuccess in IELTS. Teachers consider every student

and help to reveal weaknesses of each so that students can focus more onthem and improve significantly. Feedbacks that are given by teachers arereally helpful and well-organized. Overall, I firmly believe that the Bridgecourse is a good way to become rounded both for a universityand IELTS.

Settling in and making new friends areimportant first steps when you studyabroad. University residences provide youwith the ideal opportunity to meet peoplefrom different countries with a wide rangeof interests and cultural experiences. Ourstudents tell us that living with otherstudents in University residences is thebest way to get to know Cardiff and yourclassmates.

About 70% of our individualstudy/bedrooms have a private shower and

toilet (called ensuite), students generallyshare kitchens. Some residences have on-sire facilities, including laundrettes, socialcentre, shop and sports centre. All ourresidences have access to 24 hourUniversity security and are within easytravelling distance of the main campus. Werecommend that all international students especially those new to Cardiff and theUK take advantage of the benefits ofliving in a Cardiff University residence.

The Bridge Programme is a full-time Englishlanguage and study skills course. It isspecifically designed for European andInternational students who:.

The programme provides each student withthe strategies and techniques for improvedIELTS performance and the skills andlanguage needed for a smooth transition intoacademic study or professional life. We aim todevelop confident and successful students andprofessionals for the international marketplace.

To cater for different student needs and levelsthe Bridge Programme has entry points inSeptember, January and April.

Foundation students

Undergraduate and Postgraduate

studentsStudents who plan to meet UG and PGcourses will need to meet the minimum entrycriteria set by the relevant academic School.

We will be offering Pre-sessional programmesto students who have not reached the IELTSscore set by their academic departments bythe end of their Bridge Programme. Theminimum entry requirement for the Pre-sessional course is IELTS 6.0 (with aminimum subscore of 4.0 in each area).

What will I study?The Bridge Programme focuses on IELTSexam preparation, language, study andprofessional skills and British academicculture. Classes are normally held between9.00am and 4.00pm. This will includeapproximately 20 hours per week plusdirected study. All students study all areas ofthe course. The combination and content ofeach module helps to produce a confidentstudent who is capable of operating in Englishin every aspect of their life. The main areascovered are:

Exam strategies are essential to students whoneed an IELTS score to enter their chosendegree programme or to prove Englishlanguage proficiency to a variety ofemployers. Training will be provided on thetechniques and strategies necessary toperform successfully as an IELTS candidate.These build on the language provided inEnglish usage. There is an IELTS Test Centreat Cardiff University, and all students can takethe IELTS exam near the end of the BridgeProgramme. The cost is included in the coursefee for all students studying on the 9-monthprogramme and registration will be arranged

by the English Language Programmes office.

Study SkillsYou will learn and practise the core skillsneeded to successfully complete your chosendegree programme. Included in thesemodules are skills such as note-taking,summarising, text structure, understandinglectures, making presentations andparticipating in seminars and tutorials. Theseskills will also further your IELTS confidenceand competence.

The course also introduces students to

learning strategies, British culture and thetraditions of British universities. Longercourses introduce students to the CardiffUniversity campus and academic facilities byproviding training in the use of computersystems and software and how to use theUniversitys resource centres.

Professional SkillsYou will learn how to prepare and presentprofessional reports in the style andappropriate language for the business andprofessional world. You will also learn how toemploy your language awareness to

successfully adopt critical thinking skills.These skills will also provide greaterconfidence in approaching the IELTS Test.

Guidance and supportStudents studying on the Bridge Programmewill receive educational counselling andsupport throughout the year, includingguidance and advice throughout theapplication process.

Introduction

Cardiff Universitys Pre-sessional Englishlanguage Programme has two coursesrunning from July to September 2012:

Q 10 weeks

Q 8 weeks

These Pre-sessional courses are full-time,intensive English language programmesspecifically designed for internationalstudents holding offers at undergraduate andpostgraduate level from Cardiff University.

Successful completion* of one of the Pre-sessional English courses can providestudents with the appropriate level of Englishand study skills necessary to meet therequirements of, and participate fully in, theirchosen academic subject at Cardiff University.Some students will need to take the IELTSexam at the end of their course as a conditionof their offers (please see the conditions inyour academic course offer letter).

Students attending a Pre-sessional Englishcourse must have an offer letter fromCardiff University.

English language entryrequirements

The minimum English language entryrequirement for both courses is IELTS 6.0(with at least 4.0 in each sub score).

*Successful completion means studentswho have a minimum attendance of 90%, whosuccessfully complete all assignments set onthe course and have a positive attitude tolearning.

Pre-sessional Programmecourse content

The course syllabus includes Englishlanguage skills, study skills, exam strategiesand the academic information and trainingyou need to successfully complete yourchosen degree programme. The courseconsists of a programme of full-time study,usually between 9.00am and 4.00pm. Thiswill include a minimum of 18 and a maximumof 23 contact hours per week plusassignments.

Improving your EnglishThis part of the course will focus on the wayswe use the English language in everydaysituations in class, with friends or out and

about in the city. We will concentrate ongrammar, vocabulary, comprehension andcommunication. You will also have plenty ofopportunities to practise your pronunciation.

Study SkillsAcademic study skills are invaluable and webelieve that all university students wouldbenefit from this course. In these classes, youwill learn and practise the core skills neededto complete your chosen degree programme.They include skills such as note-taking,summarising, text structure, referencing, dataanalysis, understanding lectures, making

presentations and participating in seminarsand tutorials.

Our Academic Orientation lessons introduceyou to the Cardiff University campus andacademic facilities. They provide a basicintroduction in the use of computer operatingsystems and how to use the Universitysresource centres. They will provideinformation about learning strategies, Britishculture and the traditions of Britishuniversities.

Exam strategies and IELTS practiceExam Strategies are essential to studentsstudying English, and your future academicstudies will depend on them. To help you, we

have developed a series of lessons thatprovide you with training in the techniquesyou will need to successfully complete youruniversity exams. There is an IELTS TestCentre at Cardiff University. If your offer isconditional on an IELTS score, we offer classesto help you prepare. We will also arrange foryou to take the IELTS exam in Cardiff towardsthe end of your Pre-Sessional Course. Theexam fee is not included in the course fee.

Guidance and supportStudents studying on the Pre-sessionalEnglish Course will receive educational

counselling and support throughout theircourse. We will gladly help you to make

arrangements for you to visit your newUniversity School and are happy to offer ouradvice and assistance during your transition.

Our services do not end there: we offer openaccess support classes in English language

and academic study skills as well as one-to-one tutorial sessions to all full-timeinternational students enrolled onundergraduate and postgraduate courses atCardiff University.

Our international Student Advisors offercomprehensive guidance and advice to ourPre-sessional students who will need toextend their visa after completing the Pre-sessional course.

throughout your studiesThe English Language Programmes staffcontinue to provide language and study skillssupport for you during your undergraduate orpostgraduate degree programme at CardiffUniversity. The In-sessional team offer anopen access support programme on a first-come first-served basis throughout theacademic year. Open access support isavailable to all students from outside the EU;EU students are welcome to enrol if there issufficient space. This support comprisesworkshops and one-to-one tutorials. There arealso free subject-specific classes for both

Twelve resource centres

As a full-time student you will have access tothe twelve resource centres found throughoutthe campus. Each resource centre contains a

variety of general and subject specific libraryreference materials, study facilities andcomputer work stations. Information andsoftware in each centre are continuallyupdated, providing access to the latestknowledge and research in all areas ofacademic study.

Computing facilities for everyone

Each resource centre has plenty of networkedcomputer workstations and printers. Thismeans that you can access the internet, youremail, CD-ROMs, online journals and otherinformation at any time some operating 24

hours a day. As an English language studentat Cardiff University, you will automatically beissued with a free email address and can use

the internet at no cost for as long as you like helping with your studies as well as keepingyou in touch with family and friends.

Entry assessment and regularmonitoring

During the first week of any course, we use astandard placement exam and course-specifictesting techniques to determine your Englishlanguage abilities in listening, reading,

Innovative teaching materialsCardiff University English language coursesfollow a core syllabus developed by our ownteam of specialists, using recognised texts,coursebooks and source materials as well as

The syllabus varies according to whichcourse you study so that we meet thedifferent needs of for example a studentabout to start a postgraduate degreeprogramme at Cardiff University or someoneimproving his or her General English forcareer reasons.

Intensive language and culturalstudies

To become fluent in another countryslanguage, you must also be fluent in itsculture. We concentrate on developingessential language skills (grammar, reading,writing, listening and speaking) using task-based activities, current events and Britishthemes such as literature, history, culture,education and art where appropriate. Thismeans that you learn to use and speakEnglish in everyday real-life situations whether at University, in the workplace, withfriends, in shops, in restaurants or at home.

Teaching and learning methodsThe course employs a variety of teachingmethods, all chosen to deliver the tuition youneed in the best possible way.

Lectures

Lectures are classes given to large groups ofstudents. Lectures allow you to gain acomprehensive base of knowledge. Lecturersmake use of a range of resources and facilitiesto provide the information you need. Duringlectures, you will be given written material(handouts), information about exams and

essays, and multi-media presentations.

You may even find that you are invited to giveyour own presentation.

Seminars

These are smaller discussion groups of threeto ten students led by tutors. This is an idealtime to discuss any questions after lecturesand an opportunity to fully understand thesubjects you are studying.

Tutorials

You can arrange to meet any tutor to discussany aspect of the course. For example, if thereis something you did not understand in alecture or seminar, or if you want to discuss

the progress of your project or essay or anyother topic you want to talk about.

All students are encouraged to speakindividually to their tutors if they have anyquestions or problems; your tutor will alwaysbe pleased to see you and happy to help.

Official recognition

Once your English language course isfinished, you will receive an official CardiffUniversity Attendance Certificate. It is proofof your time with us and makes an excellent

addition to your CV - demonstrating to futureemployers your new language abilities as wellas your initiative and independence.

01How will the UK PointsBased System (PBS) visaapplication process affectme?

The UK Government introduced a new visaand immigration system on 31st March2009. As English Language Programmesstudents you will need a student visa toallow you to study in the UK. For the mostup-to-date information about visas please

visit: www.cardiff.ac.uk/elt

Due to new immigration rules introduced

in 2009, we will be required to keeprecords of attendance.

02 How will I be taught andassessed?

All language teaching takes place ingroups of 14 students or fewer. You willwork from a core syllabus, usually with amain coursebook, and make use ofauthentic and commercial resources.

Your progress will be monitored by:

Q A placement test and exit assessmenttest for all courses.

Q One-to-one tutorials with your tutorduring courses of one term or longer.

Q A progress report for courses of oneterm or longer.

03 Is there a deadline forapplications?

It is better to apply as early as possible to

avoid disappointment, but we can acceptapplications up until the end of August forthe Bridge Programme. Please note that

under the new PBS visa regulations, it maytake up to 28 days to receive your visa, andtherefore early applications are stronglyrecommended.

04Is there accommodation forcouples or families?

Cardiff University has a very limitedsupply of residences suitable for familiesand couples. We are therefore unable toguarantee this type of residences. TheResidences Office

([email protected]) can providelists of accommodation available. Theaverage cost is 85 per week, but you mayalso have to pay council tax, electricity, gasand water bills.
