NegationNegation means to state that something is
not true and the most common way of doing this is by using the word “not”
Examples
• He is leaving tomorrow • He is not leaving tomorrow• They have returned from school • They have not returned from school
Examples of Negators
• Not, n’t , no, nothing, nowhere, no one, etc• The commonest way of making a negative
statement is by introducing the word “not” immediately after the auxilliary verb in the sentence. Where there are two or more auxilliaries . It is introduced after the first one e.g He will be leaving tomorrow
• He will not be leaving tomorrow
Auxilliary verbs are helping verbs e.gCan, may, will, shall, should,have,had
When it is only the main verb, “not” is introduced after the auxilliary “Do “
He comes regularly He does not come regularly He came that day He did not come regularly
It is also used after the verbs am, is are was, were.
• E.g He could not find her bag• We can also form negative sentence with• (a) the determiner “no”• There is a table in the room• There is no table in the room• (b) the pronoun ‘ nothing’• He brought something • He brought nothing
(c) The adverb “nowhere’ ‘never’ ‘hardly ‘ scarcely’ ‘rarely’ seldom’It is somewhere now – it is nowhere nowHe is always drunk_ he is never drunk

DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY
• A descriptive essay is one written to give the reader a mental picture of a person, place or an object in his or her mind
• A good essay has three parts• (a) the introduction- This tells us generally what the es• say is all about. This is the first paragraph.• (b) Body – This tells us all about the topic, the opinion
or argument of the writer or the story. It is written in paragraphs
• (c) The conclusion: This is the brief summary of the introduction and the body of the essay ; it is the last paragraph.
HINTS ON WRITING A GOOD ESSAY
• 1. Understand every topic before you start to write it.
• 2. plan the essay points before you write on them
• 3. Begin the introduction with a paragraph • 4. write the body of the essay in paragraph• 5.Think very well before you write • 6. Punctuate your writing well
