According to Associated Press the average duration of concentration of the average human for 2013 was just 8 seconds - a second less than the one of a goldfish ! The constant and fast information we receive from smartphones has been determinant to that reduction.
Each and every one of our activities now, even sleeping , is interrupted by our need to stay online. This phenomenon is so widespread that there is a relevant syndrome called nomophobia . The fear of being without a cellphone.
According to research , among which the one of the university of Harvard , our favorite gadgets are keeping us awake by their blue light that confuses our melatonin , which makes us feel sleepy. According to another research , 66% of people sleep with their phones and most of them snooze or have interrupted sleep.
We have all experienced it. All around a table and everyone using their smartphone. There is a new term about this : phubbing , snubbing your discussant by paying more attention to a phone. ‘Smartphones are killing our society’ recently wrote the e-magazine Techepublic.
The heightened use of smartphones seems to be leading to weak memory. We never try to remember anything anymore. At an experiment carried out at USA , people aged 70 years old heard a story and then were asked to recall it. Meanwhile half of them were let to relax for 10 minutes and the others played games online.
Those who relaxed remembered the story much better than the ones who played games. This was the result of the phenomenon called ‘consolidation’.
Thanks for the attention
