English Maths Monday – Diary Entry This week’s English work is focused on the story Nothing by Mick Inkpen. You can find this story being read on YouTube by clicking this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJ9dXUbi7vs Listen to the story up to 3:39 on the video before starting your work, you will hear the rest of the story over the next few days. Think about how poor Nothing must be feeling. Make a short list of some emotions that he might have to help you to think from Nothing’s point of view. Write a short diary entry as though you are Nothing, start from the beginning of the book and write about what happens from Nothing’s point of view, including how he feels and what he is thinking. Write about the story up until 3:39 on the video (when he meets the mouse). Don’t forget a diary entry is written in the first person (I, me, my) and will only include how Nothing is feeling and how he sees things happen, whereas the book is from a narrator’s point of view who knows everything that is going on, but Nothing does not!

Monday – Multiples Choose and complete an appropriate challenge. If you are confident, complete two or more challenges!

Tuesday – Empathy Day

Empathy Day – See timetable of events attached below. Today is Empathy Day. We are proud (and lucky!) to be a hub for Empathy Lab and we champion empathy in all that we do at Kenilworth. Empathy is made up of 3 elements: thinking; acting and feeling. Today, on Empathy Day, we are encouraging everybody in our school community to do three key things:

Read: Find and start an empathy-boosting book

Connect: Practice listening 100%

Act: Use your empathy skills to make a difference

Tuesday – Division Problems Choose and complete an appropriate challenge. If you are confident, complete two or more challenges!

Wednesday – Unpicking Sentences

Before starting this piece of work,

watch the story of Nothing on the same

YouTube video as Monday, up until

6:50.

Looking at the page below, start to

think about the words the author has

chosen for these sentences. How do they make you feel? Would the feelings on

this page be changed if a different word was used? For example, would ‘he said’

have the same effect as ‘he howled’?

Write at least 3 sentences about how the sentences on this page make you feel as

you read them.

Then choose one or two words from these sentences that you think have the

biggest impact when you read them. Which words make you feel the most

sad/worried/upset about Nothing?

Write at least 2 sentences about the words you have selected explaining why

they have a big impact or why you think the author chose them.

Wednesday – Remainders Choose and complete an appropriate challenge. If you are confident, complete two or more challenges!

Thursday – Editing Sentences Choose at least 4 sentences from the story you have heard so far and edit some of the words in them. For example: “I don’t know who I am!” he howled. Could be changed to: “I don’t know who I am!” he whispered. How does this affect the sentence? What difference could this make to the reader? Does this make Nothing seem more or less upset than in the original version? You could use the sentences from the page you looked at yesterday, or another four that you have heard already. How you change the sentence is also up to you. You could choose to improve the words that the author has chosen, or you could change the meaning of the sentence. After each sentence you could explain why you changed the word and how it affects the sentence.

Thursday – Time Problems Choose and complete an appropriate challenge. If you are confident, complete two or more challenges!

Friday – Past or Future Before working on your writing today, watch the whole video of Nothing on YouTube. Today you are going to make up a part of your own story about Nothing. You can choose if you would like to write about something that happened a long time ago, an adventure that Nothing and Grandpa went on when they were both much younger, before Nothing was forgotten. Or, you could write about Nothing’s first day in the new house with the new baby. This could be about how he gets fixed, or it could be something that he does with the new baby. Try to include as much exciting language as you can, such as adjectives to describe, and don’t forget your capital letters (especially for names!), full stops and speech marks if you are using them!

Friday – Bar Charts Choose and complete an appropriate challenge. If you are confident, complete two or more challenges!
