General English
Bournemouth City College provides General English courses at all levels, including Absolute beginners, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced.
All students have a test on the first day of their course to make sure they are in a class at the right level. Also, teachers continually monitor progress to make sure that students progress to higher levels as soon as possible.
Course duration is flexible and students can join a class on any Monday.
There are two General English courses. Our Standard Course involves 15 hours tuition per week, while our Intensive Course is for 22.5 hours per week.
Generally, a full Standard English course is 12 weeks, after which a student should be ready to move to a higher level. Students on the Intensive Course should be able to progress to a higher level in about 8 weeks.
Course length and content is closely linked to a well-respected course book (e.g. “Headway”, “Cutting Edge” etc.) plus extra and comprehensive materials, developed by our teaching staff, to support the formal course work (e.g. current affairs, appropriate grammar and vocabulary games, culture, class discussions etc).
All materials are designed to ensure students progress in grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing skills.
Above you can see a typical week's timetable for a General English course.
In some cases students can book for less than 4 weeks, however a longer period is advisable. Many students choose to stay considerably longer and progress through a number of levels until they have reached the desired standard.

Leisure and Welfare
Bournemouth City College is located in the beautiful, coastal resort of Bournemouth. It has a university and many colleges, other language schools and is a popular tourist centre.
This means that it has a cosmopolitan atmosphere with many attractions, including a beautiful beach, a nearby National Park and all the amenities you could want – theatres, cinemas, cafes and bars and a busy shopping centre, to name just a few.
We recognise that students want to enjoy themselves after class and so we have a busy social programme. You can see a typical week's programme opposite. Some activities are entirely free and some are offered at a reasonable price to cover costs
On arrival at the school, students are introduced to their teachers and the members of the management team responsible for their welfare. There is a detailed, written Student Guide which gives valuable information and tips, including a 24 hour emergency telephone number. We want all our students to enjoy their stay in Bournemouth and do our very best to ensure that they have a safe and rewarding experience.

Bournemouth City Col lege can provide two types of student accommodation: Homestay or our Residences.
This is where our students stay with carefully selected English families. This means that they can practise their English and are provided with breakfast and an evening meal. These families are located in areas of the town easily reached by very good bus services. There are generally between one and three foreign students in each family and every effort is made to ensure those of the same nationality do not stay together so that they use their English wherever possible.
