A c c o r d i n g to historical reports a D u t c h -
m a n w a s the first European t o d iscover
Austral ia. H e landed his ship, t h e
" D U Y F K E N " , in 1 6 0 6 at W e i p a in
Q u e e n s l a n d f r o m w h e r e t o d a y baux i te
is carried by M Æ R S K ships. Fur thermore
it w a s m.s. " R O M Ø M Æ R S K " w h i c h
in 1 9 6 6 carr ied the load ing- ins ta l la t ions
n o w e m p l o y e d at W e i p a d o w n f r o m
J a p a n .
T h e first p e r m a n e n t European se t t lement
dates back to J a n u a r y 1 7 8 8 w h e n 1 0 3 0
soldiers, sai lors, and convic ts arr ived
f r o m England a n d sett led w h e r e S y d n e y
is today .
T h e or iginal inhabi tants , " the Abor ig ines" ,
t o d a y c o u n t less t h a n o n e per cent of
the inhabi tants . It is not k n o w n for sure
f r o m w h e r e these people or ig inate . It is
bel ieved, h o w e v e r , tha t t h e y c a m e f r o m
S o u t h - E a s t Asia and first set f o o t in
Austra l ia a b o u t 1 2 , 0 0 0 years ago.
T h e M Æ R S K of f ice w a s registered in
M e l b o u r n e o n M a r c h 1st, 1 9 6 6 . T h e
of f ice is in da i ly c o n n e c t i o n w i t h C o p e n -
h a g e n via t h e te lepr inter , a c o n n e c t i o n
w h i c h is n o r m a l l y establ ished in less t h a n
3 0 seconds t h o u g h the d is tance is a b o u t
1 1 , 3 0 0 mi les . O n e of the m a i n j o b s of
the off ice is t o contact the M Æ R S K ships
w h e n t h e y cal l at M e l b o u r n e or G e e l o n g
(on ly 5 0 mi les a w a y ) . T h e r e is a large
Shel l re f inery at Gee long w h e r e our t a n -
kers call f r e q u e n t l y , but even M e l b o u r n e
is visited b o t h by re f r igera ted-cargo ves-
sels, bulkcarr iers and tankers. Besides, t h e
M Æ R S K f l a g is seen in the ports of N e w
South W a l e s , Queens land a n d W e s t e r n
Austral ia.
T h e c l imate ranges f rom t rop ica l c o n d i -
t ions in t h e north to frost a n d s n o w in
certain areas of Victoria a n d N e w S o u t h
Wa les in w i n t e r . The area c o v e r e d w i t h
s n o w is larger t h an Swi t ze r land , a n d a
t h r e e - h o u r r ide by car f r o m M e l b o u r n e
wi l l take y o u t o a superb sk i ing -a rea . T h e
season lasts for about three m o n t h s .

has recent ly visi ted M o m b a s a , Z a n z i b a r
a n d A d e n , has t r ied to f ind o u t t h e reason
w h y , a p p a r e n t l y , these t i m e - o l d craf t are
b e c o m i n g less f requent w i t h t h e a d v a n c e
of the t e c h n i c a l wor ld . T h e p h o t o g r a p h
s h o w s a t y p i c a l situation off M o m b a s a
w i t h a n u m b e r of dhows , character ized by
their s lop ing masts and stra ight b o w s ,
w h i c h are k n o w n under t h e n a m e of
"bhum"s . T h e w o r d d h o w does not s igni -
f y any spec ia l t y p e of boat , b u t covers a
w i d e range of d i f ferent types, f r o m b a g -
halas in t h e O m a n Gulf and t h e K u w a i t
area w i t h the i r high sterns, t o t h e t iny
jahaz is and m a s h u a s f rom th e east coast
of Africa. T o m o d e r n sh ipp ing p e o p l e it
m igh t be in terest ing to hear h o w these,
s o m e t i m e s pr imi t ive , boats are e m p l o y e d ,
a n d w h e r e t h e y trade. Char ter -par t ies are
u n k n o w n ; e v e r y t h i n g is sett led a c c o r d i n g
t o ancient r o u t i n e and oral a g r e e m e n t . For
instance, a j a h a z i of 5 0 tons w i t h a c r e w
of t w e l v e m a y have a th ree m o n t h s '
v o y a g e like t h e f o l l o w i n g :
F r o m L a m u in Kenya to M o m b a s a w i t h
f i r e - w o o d , a n d f r o m there to Z a n z i b a r
carrying g e n e r a l cargo. Further in bal last
t o Dar es S a l a a m returning t o Z a n z i b a r
w i t h live cat t le . T h e next v o y a g e f r o m
Zanz ibar to M o g a d i s c i o may compr ise a
cargo of 4 8 0 sacks of dates a n d a h u n d r e d
barrels of c o c o n u t oil. A f te r hav ing
d ischarged th is at M o g a d i s c i o a cargo of
1 0 0 0 tins of I n d i a n buffalo m e a t m a y be
sh ipped to M u k h a l l a in H a d h r a m a u t , a n d
f r o m there a cargo of salt f r o m H a f u n to
M o g a d i s c i o , a n d f inal ly b a c k to Lamu.
Bes ides the cargo a j ahaz i w i l l usual ly
carry as m a n y passengers as t h e n a k h o d a
(sk ipper ) f inds feasible. In t h e 2 0 t h c e n -
tu ry w h e r e every th ing po in ts t o w a r d s fast
v o y a g e s a n d shortest possib le calls at
th e ports, the mere ex is tance of t h e d h o w
seem s a lmost an a n a c h r o n i s m , but the
impor tan t feature of th is k ind of sea
traff ic , w h e r e the w i n d is t h e sole source
of p o w e r , is that it fo rms an impor tan t
l ink in a t rade organ iza t ion w h e r e eco -
n o m y not t ime is the dec is ive factor , a n d
w h e r e the f o u n d a t i o n is an u n b e l i e v a b l y
l o w price level. Apar t f r o m t h e bu i ld ing
of th e vessels these are very, very c h e a p
to run. T h e c r e w gets no pay e x c e p t a
m i n i m u m share of the net t a k i n g s of every
v o y a g e ; t h e y subsist sole ly o n w h a t t h e y
c a n earn t h r o u g h private business w i t h
rugs, t r inkets a n d food .
D h o w - o w n e r s in the Persian Gul f as w e l l
as in East Afr ica main ly leave business
to th e n a k h o d a , thus sav ing e x p e n s e s for
o f f ice staff and sh ipbrok ing .
D u r i n g my recent visit to A d e n a n d M o m -
basa I real ized, h o w e v e r , t h a t several
d h o w s are b e c o m i n g m o t o r i z e d as has
b e e n the case w i t h the C h i n e s e junks ,
a n d m a y b e this techn ica l s tep f o r w a r d
signif ies the beg inn ing of a m o d e r n i z a t i o n
of th is part of the w o r l d .

negot ia t ions w a s m e m b e r s h i p a t ta ined
w i t h t w e l v e sai l ings per year unti l the
m i d d l e of 1 9 7 0 w h e n the sai l ings w i l l be

on th e coast. W a v e s as tall as houses or
even t o w e r s are m e n t i o n e d bo th in of f i -
cial reports and in sailors' yarns, t h o u g h
this es t imat ion is not very concrete . It
d e p e n d s o n the size of the house or the
t o w e r . W a v e s rise as a result of the w i n d
pressure aga inst t h e sur face of the sea,
th e wa te r part icles be ing the reby c o m -
pressed upwards , a n d a f te rwards fa l l ing
back to their or iginal posi t ion. This means
that the w a t e r as such does not m o v e f r o m
o n e place to another . O n l y the physical
s h a p e is m o v e d a long . It is es t imated that
th e w a v e s of the Nor th Pacif ic and the
At lant ic wi l l rarely be more t h a n 1 2 - 1 5
metres. S o m e reports, h o w e v e r , tel l a b o u t
w a v e s of up to 2 0 metres or even more.
A special p h e n o m e n o n , w h i c h is k n o w n
a lmost exc lus ive ly in the Pacif ic, is t e r m e d
t s u n a m i ( J a p a n e s e ) . A t s u n a m i is a w a v e
c a u s e d by an undersea e a r t h q u a k e w h i c h
results in t h e subsid ing of mil l ions of
t o n s of the sea bo t tom. A t s u n a m i m a y
have a length of 2 5 0 k i lometres, a n d
it m a y m o v e at a speed of a lmost 8 0 0
k i lometres per hour.
Sh ips o n the sea or at a n c h o r off t h e
coast w i l l hardly feel this w a v e w h i c h lifts
t h e sur face of the sea a b o u t 3 0 - 6 0 cent i -
metres only . N o t till the w a v e encounters
resistance, for instance in a V - s h a p e d bay
or inlet , does t h e ca tast rophe occur. A n
e n o r m o u s w a v e rolls against th e coast
s m a s h i n g every th ing in its w a y , and w h e n
it retires the sea is still ca lm, but its sur-
f ace is covered w i t h trees, d r o w n e d peop le
a n d animals . A c c o r d i n g to J a p a n e s e
statistics g o i n g back to 6 8 4 A . D . the
J a p a n e s e islands have been harassed
by a l together 8 5 tsunamis . O n e e x a m p l e
is k n o w n in the w e s t e r n hemisphere w h e r e
a t s u n a m i ( p r e s u m a b l y ) harassed a large
part of Lisbon in 1 7 5 5 .
