Alexander Fleming, the man who discovered penicillin, was born in Scotland in 1881. He became an assistant bacteriologist when he was quite young and went on to become a lecturer in Bacteriology.

Fleming conducted various experiments throughout the 1920s. In 1928, while doing research on the influenza virus, Fleming discovered penicillin, an antibiotic used to treat different types of bacterial infections. The mass production of this life-saving drug started in 1943. Fleming won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1945.
