Introduction

We are delighted to present the second edition of the

Gilbert & Gaillard Wine Guide. It contains our 2011

selection of almost 5,000 French wines, complete with

comments, tasting notes and serving recommendations. It includes the

most prestigious wines and crus classés, but also many less well-known

winemakers that we have discovered. All of France’s wine-growing

regions are covered, with a detailed map and an analysis of each appel-

lation terroir by terroir. The Gilbert & Gaillard Wine Guide is the

essential guide to discovering French wines.

In France, Gilbert & Gaillard guides have been among the top refer-

ences in the wine profession for more than 20 years. In 2010, with the

aim of sharing our passion with the rest of the world, we decided to

publish the guide in English to reach a wider public. Our magazine,

Gilbert & Gaillard Wine International, is also distributed in English

in 20 countries. And you can join thousands of other international

90-94/100 : a superlative wine combining finesse, complexity and remarkable

winemaking.

Nearby, don’t miss the town of Jarnac, the heart of Cognac

production, where many of the most famous Cognac houses are

located (including Thomas Hine & Co, Delamain and

Courvoisier). Jarnac also happens to be the birthplace of

another famous French leader (this one, of the 20th century),

François Mitterrand.

Travel south to the delightful village of Segonzac, at the centre of

the acclaimed appellation of Grande Champagne with its sea of

grapevines punctuated by Romanesque churches. Here you will

find top-name Cognac houses such as Frapin, with its elegant

Château de Fontpinot surrounded by 300 hectares of Cognac

premier cru vines. Not far away is Salles d’Angles, a very pleasant

village where you should not miss stopping by the estate of Patrick

Drouet to taste his remarkable Pineau des Charentes (fortified

wine) and Cognacs.

T he exceptional brandy known as Cognac is the product

of an extraordinary wine-growing region north of

Bordeaux. The area is not home to just one Cognac, but

many, each with its own distinctive style arising from the skill of

its producers, its specific terroir and the blending art of its master

taster - these all play a role in creating this most heavenly of

spirits. A visit to the home of Cognac in lush and peaceful

Charente is the key to revealing its secrets.

To give honour where honour is due, it is necessary to start with

this wine-growing region’s capital, the medieval town of Cognac.

There is much to discover in this charming and historic town: its

slow-moving river, the vital artery that so contributed to the

town’s economic development, described by King Henri IV as the

loveliest river in his kingdom, to the narrow cobbled streets and

richly decorated buildings of this birthplace of King François I.

Scattered around the town, you will find world-famous Cognac

houses, each outdoing the next with their impressive sites and

captivating guided visits. The town is lovely by day and by night,

with its fine restaurants, market, museum of art and history, town

hall and gardens.

perature is 1 to 1.5° higher than on thelower or upper slopes. This band is notlocated exactly on the south-facing slopes,but in general on the steepest slope"(Claude Sittler, 1990). On the otherhand, the Alsace wine-growing soils arecharacterised by a great geological diver-sity that is probably unique in French vinegrowing. The vine has colonised chalk,marly-chalk, sandy-clay, clayey-loam,gypseous, volcanic sandstone, schistous,granitic and granitic gneiss soils. As wewill see, some grape varieties are happierin particular types of soil.

THE GRAPE VARIETIES OF

ALSACE- A DISTINCTIVE FAMILYThe wines of Alsace - including thegrand crus - are made from a single typeof grape, except for Crémant which canbe blended from several separate varie-ties. However the specific nature of the

The Alsace wine-growing areastretches for about 100 kmsalong the western section of the

Vosges mountains from Marlenheim toThann, with a small northern enclave atWissembourg. It is at the northern limitof the vine-growing area and white grapevarieties are therefore in the majority.14,000 hectares of vines are laid out ataltitudes of between 200 and 400 m andyield an annual average of 150 millionbottles. The wine-growing area has agenerally south or south-east aspect. Thisis the perfect location for following thefamous Alsace Wine Route. But mostimportantly, it enables the vines to takeadvantage of a maximum amount of suns-hine in the growing and ripening period.In addition, its position means it enjoys aremarkable microclimate: "A warm tem-perature band showed up on the slopesand half-way up the hills, where the tem-

ONE OF FRANCE’S BEST KEPT SECRETS

Alsace has long been famous as one of the most food and wine-lovingregions in the whole of France. Its wines are capable of creating unsus-pected harmonies and providing flavours that complement each other.What for example is the secret alchemy that brings pikeperch (zander)together with Riesling, foie gras with Tokay-Pinot Gris, Munster cheesewith Gewurztraminer and kugelhopf with Crémant ? An extraordinarydiversity to discover.

Alsace varieties remains essential for pro-ducing very distinctive wines. All know-ledgeable wine lovers know that there are7 original grape varieties and can listthem without thinking. Here they are inmore detail, together with another, lesswell-known member of the family, butone equally worth considering. Sylvaner: this variety, one of the best-known in Alsace, was discredited years agobecause of high yields. If it is handled welland if its late ripening is carefully takeninto account, it can produce a wine that isremarkable for its lightness, is lively andthirst-quenching and has aromas of youngfruit or flowers. Riesling: this is one of the greatest whitegrape varieties in the world. On sandy-claysoils the "gentle aromatic" – as it is some-times called – gives a dry and elegant wineof distinction, the colour of crystal, withdelicate fruit (orange peel and exotic fruits)and with floral and mineral (flinty) hints. Ithas surprising finesse, power, balance andlength on the palate. It can ripen at relati-vely low temperatures and its vintage yearsmature perfectly. Gewürztraminer: the most aromaticgrape variety grown in the area, it is usedto make the most famous of the Alsacewines on marly-chalk soils. It comesfrom a selection of the most aromaticSavagnin Rose or Traminer varieties. Thewine, full of vigour, well-rounded, with apowerful structure, offers great com-plexity. In it are found scents of acacia,lily, rose, carnation, honey, cardamom,spices (gewürz = spicy), cinnamon, clove,pepper, lychee, grapefruit and quince.This superb and generous wine is capa-ble of maturing marvellously. The finestvintages bestow upon the wine a touchof sweetness. Muscat: this gives an aromatic wine that isheady yet dry and which is nothing like theMuscats from the south. It has inimitablefruit and flower aromas with a veritable

explosion of acacia, box, rosewood andgeranium. Pinot Blanc: this variety, which gives of itsbest on a loamy soil, gives a soft, supplewine full of freshness and with subtle aro-matic hints. It has become one of the basicvarieties of Crémant d'Alsace. Pinot Gris: this is the proper name of theAlsace Tokay (Grauer Tokayer). It ishappy in deep soils and clayey-loamconglomerates. Its powerful, well-struc-tured, even opulent wine is very long onthe palate and releases aromas of driedfruit, fruit tree wood, undergrowth andgame, where a hint of smoked meat canbe detected. It is most certainly one ofAlsace’s greatest wines. Pinot Noir: this is Alsace’s only red winegrape variety. Perfect when it has found asandy or chalky soil, it is made into roséor red wine. The latter, which has thecharacteristic colour of claret, developsflavours of small red fruits where thecherry dominates. Klevener: this variety of the formerTraminer or Savagnin Rose gives a full-bodied and well-balanced wine. Under thedecree of 4th February 1997, only thecommunes of Bougheim, Getwiller,Heiligenstein and Obernai can use thename "Klevener de Heiligenstein".

WHAT ARE THE PRODUCTION

CONDITIONS? Alsace wines normally show the grapevariety on the label and are made 100%from that grape. A blend of two or morevarieties is called Edelzwicker. Theappellation wines have a yield per hectareof 8,000 litres with a minimum alcohollevel of 8.5°. The production conditionsfor the 50 Grands Crus reduce the yieldto 6,000 litres/hectare with 10° mini-mum for Riesling and Muscat, and 12°for Gewürztraminer or Pinot Gris. Theirareas have been set out by the I.N.A.O.(the National Institute for Appellations

The"Vendange tardive" (late harvest) andthe "Sélection de grains nobles" (selec-tion of superior over-ripe grapes),which have been official Alsace speciali-ties since 1984, have won a place in thehearts of all wine lovers."Vendange tardive" is only practised onthe Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris,Riesling and Muscat grapes, both forVin d’Alsace A.C. and for the GrandsCrus. Harvesting when they are over-ripe increases the available sugar withinthe berry, especially if it has begun to becovered with the noble rot. The winesthen reach the pinnacle of their deve-lopment and are real masterpieces. The"Sélections de grains nobles" are harves-ted by hand, with successive pickings ofgrapes affected by botrytis cinerea. Theresulting concentration gives a powerfulwine with complex aromas that isexceptionally long on the palate and hasan unparalleled long life.The Crémant d'Alsace sparkling wines,the vast majority of which are white, areproduced by the traditional method of asecond fermentation in the bottle. Theyare made from one or more grape varie-ties (Pinot Blanc, Riesling, Pinot Grisand occasionally Chardonnay). CrémantRosé is made from the Pinot Noir. Strictproduction conditions that are veryclose to those for the Vin d’Alsace appel-lation and an irreproachable qualityhave been the basis of the success of theCrémants. Wonderful grands crus Thefame of Alsace wine was initially builtupon the sure foundation of its grapevarieties. But connoisseurs, and evenmore so the winemakers themselves,have long recognised that such and sucha wine from such and such a place wasbetter than a commune’s general pro-duction. In a deliberate move, the pro-ducers therefore decided to put those

parcels of land that for centuries hadbeen the glory of Alsace wine back ontotheir pedestal. If we leaf through the factsheets of the terroirs where the 50 cur-rent Grands Crus are produced, weimmediately see that these thousand-year old vineyards cover all the steepestslopes of the hills sheltering them fromcold winds that these are very often inthe shape of a bowl, a crescent or an arcthat encourages exposure to the sun;that there is little topsoil; that the wine-growing parcels are located on gravelthat both warms the soil and gives gooddrainage; and that thanks to a specificmicro-climate, rainfall is low. This iseffectively the jewel in the crown ofAlsace wine. By taking this step, Alsacehas not only gone back to its roots, butrediscovered its best wines.

REVIEW OF RECENT VINTAGES2006: not a big harvest but some verygood results. Some promising vendangestardives et grains nobles2007: an exceptional September produ-ced a very ripe and healthy vintage. A bigharvest and good quality globally.Excellent vendage tardives and selectionde grains nobles.2008: Changeable weather led to verydifferent levels of maturity depending onthe grape variety and area, but fine wea-ther at the end of September allowed theharvest to be carried out over a very longperiod. This resulted in white wines withgood acidity and a fresh, aromatic nose.The wines from the best terroirs havegood aging potential. 2009: Exceptional grape health andmaturity gave rise to wines high in alco-hol but that retain a satisfactory level ofacidity. They are perfumed and can beenjoyed when young. The fine weatherin October allowed an excellentVendange Tardive and Sélections deGrains Nobles for late-harvest wines.

THREE APPELLATIONS

FOR ONE REGION

A.C. VIN D'ALSACE

These wines must be bottled in the areaof production and in the slender bottlecharacteristic of Alsace wine. They areavailable in all the authorised grapevarieties. This is unique in France andratified by the I.N.A.O., taking accountof both the actual history of the rebuil-ding of the Alsace vine-growing area postphylloxera and of a Rhine tradition.They have been part of the great A.C.family since 1962.

A.C. ALSACE GRAND CRUOnly four grape varieties are permittedfor the A.C. Alsace Grand Cru:Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Muscat andPinot Gris. The label must include A.C.Alsace Grand Cru and show the locality,the grape variety and the year. Twenty-five localities were selected in 1983.Then in 1992, the National Institute for

Appellations d'Origine ratified the defi-nition of 25 new parcels. From that time,Alsace has prided itself on a new appella-tion made up of 50 Grands Crus. Thewines produced in these areas have rareelegance and great finesse, and alsopower, quality and distinction. The bestyears give wines that can be laid downfor a long time.

A.C. CRÉMANT D'ALSACECreated in 1976, this has been given anunprecedented welcome by wine-lovers,as Crémant d'Alsace is the top appella-tion sparkling wine drunk in France,ahead of Clairette de Die. It is made by500 producers who put nearly 20 millionbottles on the market. It has the particu-lar feature of being able to blend thevarious recommended grape varietieswhich must all come from the regionalappellation area.
