BURJ KHALIFA

Burj Khalifa (Arabic: برج خليفة ," Khalifa Tower") is a very tall skyscraper in

Dubai, United Arab Emirates and is the tallest building ever built, at 828

metres (2,717 feet). Before the building opened, it was called Burj Dubai. The

building is 162 stories high. Construction of the tower was started in 2004.

The building was officially opened on 4 January 2010. It is the tallest

structure made by humans in the world. The building is more than 300

metres (980 feet) taller than Taipei 101. Taipei 101 was the tallest building

until 2010 before Burj Khalifa was built.

RECORDS

The building is not only the tallest structure in the world, it also holds the

following records-

Tallest skyscraper to top of spire: 828 m (2,717 ft)

Tallest structure ever built: 828 m (2,717 ft)

Tallest freestanding structure: 828 m (2,717 ft)

(126th floor), at about 440 m (1,440 ft).

World's highest swimming pool (125th floor)

Worlds highest restaurant (128th floor)

TAJ MAHAL

The Taj Mahal is a tomb built in the 17th century by the Mughal king Shah

Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. She was his 3rd wife.

Eventually, Shah Jahan was entombed in the Taj Mahal with his wife.

The building is in the city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Widely thought of as one of

the most beautiful buildings in the world, it is one of India's biggest tourist

attractions.

It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with the Agra Fort, 2.5

kilometers away. It was listed as one of the New7Wonders of the World in

2007.

THREATS

Many people think it is one of the most beautiful buildings ever built.

However, it is slowly being damaged by acid rain. A nearby oil refinery has

been blamed for some of the damage. In 1996, the Indian Supreme Court

said that local industry was harming the Taj Mahal. The court set up an area

of 10,400 square meters around the Taj Mahal called the Taj Trapezium

Zone. Industries within this zone must use natural gas instead of coal.

There have also been concerns about the effect of visitors on the site. Rajan

Kishore, a conservationist from Agra, has said that visitors walking through

are putting too much pressure on the Taj Mahal, and suggested that the

number of people allowed in be

limited.

MOUNT EVEREST

Mount Everest (Tibetian: Chomolungma; Nepali: Sagarmāthā) is the largest

and highest mountain on Earth. Mount Everest is in the Himalayas. It is

about 8,848 metres (29,029 ft) high.

Its peak is on the border of Nepal and China. It is above the Death Zone

where the air is too thin for a human being to live, so usually extra oxygen is

used when climbing. The Death Zone refers to the parts of Mount Everest

that are above 7,600 metres (24,900 ft) above sea level.

British people began exploring the area around Mount Everest in 1921. The

first expedition to try to climb to the top of Everest was in 1922. On June 8th,

1924, George Leigh Mallory and climbing partner Andrew Irvine tried to

climb to the summit of Mount Everest. They disappeared into the fog and

were not seen again until Mallory's dead body was found by Conrad Anker in

1999. To this day, no one is sure whether or not Mallory and Irvine made it

to the summit before dying, 29 years before the next climbers would reach

the summit.

The top of Mount Everest was first reached in May 1953 by the Sherpa

Tenzing Norgay and the New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary. This was after 31

years of British trials to get a man on top.

Sherpas are the local people who live at the foot of Mount Everest and not

the porters who carry the climbers' luggage. For the Sherpas, Mount Everest

is a sacred mountain and

before they climb Mount

Everest they always do a

sacrificial offering.

HA LONG BAY

Halong Bay is a bay in the north of Vietnam, in Quang Ninh province. The bay

is around 579 square miles in size and is filled with over 1,960 tall, rocky

islands. Most of the islands are made out of limestone and are covered in

tropical plants. There are beaches and caves on many of them, too. Many

kinds of animals are found on the islands, such as lizards, deer, antelope and

monkeys. 200 species of fish live in the waters of the bay. Halong Bay is

famous for its variety of plant and animal life, its beauty and its history.

The name Halong Bay means ‘Descending Dragon Bay’. There is a legend that

tells of how the gods sent dragons that dropped jewels out of their mouths.

These fell into the bay and created the islands.

The limestone in the bay is around 500 million years old. Archaeologists have

found proof that there were people living in and around Halong Bay up to

18,000 years ago!

Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven

Wonders of Nature.

Not all of the islands are named, but those that are mostly get their names

because of their shape. For example, there’s one island called ‘Teapot Island’

and another called ‘Chopsticks Island’.

The islands are mostly taller than they are wide – around six times taller, in

fact. They are between 160 and 330 feet high. On many islands there are

very steep cliffs.

GREAT WALL OF CHINA

The Great Wall of China is an ancient wall in China. The wall is made of

cement, rocks and powdered dirt. It was built to protect the north of the

empire of China from enemy attacks. It is the longest structure humans have

ever built. It is about 21,196 kilometres (13,171 miles) long, 9.1 metres (30

feet) wide and 15 metres (50 feet) high. The earlier sections on the wall are

made of compacted dirt and stone. Later in the Ming Dynasty they used

bricks. There are 7,000 watch towers, block houses for soldiers and beacons

to send smoke signals.

Nineteen walls have been built that were called the Great Wall of China. The

first was built in the 7th century BC. The most famous wall was built

between 226–200 BC by the first Emperor of Imperial China, Qin Shai Hong.

Not much of this wall will remain as people have been stealing from it. The

current wall was built during the Ming Dynasty.

Builders used materials that were nearby. Some parts of the wall were made

of mud, straw, and twigs. Thousands of workers died from giant falling

stones, exhaustion, disease, animal attacks, and starvation. The idea that

workers who died were buried in and under the Great Wall is a myth.

Rumours about astronauts being able to see the Great Wall from the moon

are scientifically not proven. The Great Wall has shown up in radar images

taken from space, but scientists are sure it is not possible for astronauts to

see the wall with a naked eye. One astronaut who spoke about being able to

see the Great Wall from space was Neil Armstrong.

He said that on the moon it was very clear that the

wall was not visible.

SHANGHAI

Shanghai is one of the four municipalities of the People's Republic of China.

It is located on the southern estuary of the Yangtze, and the Huangpu River

flows through it. With a population of 24.2 million as of 2018[update], it is

the most populous urban area in China and the second most populous city

proper in the world. Shanghai is a global centre for finance, innovation, and

transportation, and the Port of Shanghai is the world's busiest container

port. Originally a fishing village and market town, Shanghai grew in

importance in the 19th century due to trade and its favourable port location.

Shanghai has been described as the "showpiece" of the booming economy of

China. Featuring several architecture styles such as Art Deco and shikumen,

the city is renowned for its Lujiazui skyline, museums, and historic

buildings—including the City God Temple, the Yu Garden, the China Pavilion,

and buildings along the Bund. Shanghai is also known for its sugary cuisine

and distinctive dialect, Shanghainese. Every year, the city hosts numerous

national and international events, including Shanghai Fashion Week, the

Chinese Grand Prix, and ChinaJoy.

Tourism is a major industry of Shanghai. In 2017, the number of domestic

tourists increased by 7.5% to 318 million, while the number of overseas

tourists increased by 2.2% to 8.73 million. As of 2018[update], the city had

72 five star hotels, 65 four star hotels, 1639 travel agencies, 113 rated tourist

attractions, and 34 red tourist attractions.

MOUNT FUJI

Mount Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan, at 3,776 metres (12,388 ft) high.

It is also a volcano. It is on the border between Shizuoka Prefecture and

Yamanashi Prefecture. Mount Fuji is a famous cultural icon of Japan, as a lot

of people have painted it and taken photographs of it. It became the 13th

UNESCO World Heritage Site in Japan on June 22, 2013. The last time it

erupted was 1707 to 1708.

Active volcano

Mount Fuji is officially classified as an active volcano, but some describe Fuji

as dormant or inactive. The last major event was the Hōei eruption of

Mount Fuji which started on December 16, 1707 and ended about January 1,

1708 during the Edo period. Cinders and ash from Fuji fell like rain in Izu

Province, Kai Province, Sagami Province, and Musashi Province.

Shinto

The mountain is thought to be named after Fuchi, the Buddhist fire goddess.

The mountain is sacred in the Shinto religion and at the bottom of the

mountain are shrines to the goddess Konohananosakuya-hime

Climbing

Many people climb Mt. Fuji every year. The official climbing season is in the

summer: July 25 to August 25. There are three mountain-climbing routes on

the Shizuoka side of Mt. Fuji. There is a post office on the top of Mt. Fuji

which is open only in summer. The post

office was built in

1909 and is the

highest post office

in Japan.
