EDGE stands for Enhanced Data rates for GSM

Evolution . It is also called as Enhanced GPRS .

EDGE is a high-speed mobile data standard. Thistechnology gives GSM the capacity to match the

    services offered by 3G network.

EDGE is considered as a 2.75G standard that is seen asa transition from 2G to 3G.

EDGE allows data transmission speedsup to 473.6 kbps.

The idea behind EDGE is to increase thedata rate that can be achieved with GSM by changing the type of modulation used

while still working with existing GSMand GPRS network.

    1. GSM(Global system for mobile comm.) Is the largest mobile standard in use today. More

than 70 percent of the worlds phone operate on

    GSM.

    GSM user enjoy worldwide roaming.

GSM is implemented in 800MHz, 900 MHz,1800MHz and 1900MHz frequency bands

    2. GPRS(General Packet Radio Service):

An enhancement for GSM networks that introduces packet data transmission.

It provide users always on connectivity and greater bandwidth. It uses Gaussian minimum shift keying.

GPRS delivers speeds of up to 115kbps.

GPRS roaming has not implemented in many countries.

Potential for packet getting lost or corrupted during the

data transmission over the radio link.

Though it incorporates data integrity andretransmission strategies, potential transit delays can

    occur.

Gaussian filter increases the modulationmemory in the system and causes inter symbolinterference, making it more difficult to

discriminate between different transmitted datavalues and requiring more complex channelequalization algorithms .

    2. 8-PSK Modulation:8PSK (8 Phase Shift Keying) is used in EDGE in

which a carrier can exist in one of eight differentstates. Each state represents three bits - 000 to 111

    A) EDGE Classic- It is developed by ETSI.

    B) EDGE Compact- It uses less than 1 MZspectrum.

It usesa) Inter base station time synchronizationb) Time group and discontinuous

    transmission

It uses 8-psk modulation technique. The three bit phase carrier triples the

gross data rate. EDGE transfer SMS and MMS at a

faster rate. EDGE increases the number of

    internet and mobile phone subscribers.

Higher Power Consumption duringdata transmission causing battery todrain fast

As power consumption is increased;mobile motherboard circuittemperature rises (within operating

range)which gets transferred to itsbody and feels hot .

In just over two decades, mobile networktechnologies have evolved from simple 1Gnetworks to todays 3G networks.

Now also 4G network is currently used and it isbeing evolved to 5G
