VAroughneck – A ROBUST CASING CONNECTION WITH ENHANCED TORQUE
MAIN CHARACTERISTICS
VAroughneck connection at power-tight make-up
VAroughneck connection at tensionload combined with internal pressure
VAroughneck connection at compression load
VAroughneck was developed specifically for well applications where rotation ofthe casing is required. It combines the strengths of API Buttress with additionaladvantages of VAroughneck as mentioned below.
API BUTTRESSIn deviated well applications, bending loads in the buildzone result in axial tension and compression loads on theconnection. Due to the thread profile (3° angle on the loadflank, 10° angle on the stabbing flank), the Buttress connec-tion is able to handle axial loads without inducing high ra-dial forces to pin and box.
Advantage » Minimal risk of jump out failures under bending loads.
Disadvantages» Limited torque due to the J-Distance. The make-up distance of the Buttress connection is not controlled by a torque shoulder.
» Risk of excessive stress could lead to coupling failure.
VAroughneckIn order to achieve high torque transfer through theconnection, the make-up distance has to be limited. In addition to the minimal risk of thread jump-outunder bending loads, VAroughneck has the followingadvantages.
Advantages» With the VAroughneck thread design, the make-up is limited by pin-to-pin contact.
» At least twice the torque capability of API Buttress.
» Controlled stress distribution proven by FEA.
Gap in the center of the coupling (”J-Distance“)

STRENGTHS OF VAroughneck» At least twice the torque transfer compared to API connections.
» Compatible with API Buttress.
» Suitable for tough field applications.
» Offers the opportunity to rotate the casing string during installation.
» Rotating during cementing leads to improved quality of the cement bond.
» Tension and compression rating 100% of the pipe body.
» Internal flush to minimize turbulences.
VAroughneck – DESIGNED FOR THE FOLLOWING APPLICATIONS» Deviated wells.
» Completion of extended-reach wells.
» Drilling with casing.
» Internal coating.
VAroughneck ACCESSORIESLicensed machine shops can provide threadingservices worldwide for accessories and repair ifneeded. List of current licensees available onwww.voestalpine.com/tubulars under “CustomerService“.
VAroughneck and API Buttress can be made-up togetherwithout using a crossover. If the higher torque properties areneeded in specific parts of the string, they can be achieved
by installing a spacer ring to occupy the J-Distance or byapplying a thread locking compound, such as Bakerlok®or Tube-Lok.

VAroughneck –TESTED TO VERIFY THE PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS
MAKE-AND-BREAK TESTSM&B tests have been successfully car-ried out with samples which verifiedthe manufacturing tolerances. Thetests comprised the complete nomi-nal pipe outside diameter range incombination with different gradesand various wall thicknesses. All tor-que-turn-diagrams show the sameproper characteristics until the finalmake-up torque has been reached. Inaddition no galling was observed onthe connections after a minimum of 3times make-and-break operation.
CONNECTION YIELD TORQUE TESTSVAroughneck has been extensivelytested regarding torque capacity.Overtorque tests have been perfor-med through the whole range of pipeoutside diameters, grades and wallthicknesses to ensure outstandingconnection yield torque for toughfield applications.
CAL I SERIES B TESTSMultiple specimens have been suc-cessfully tested related to CAL I seriesB according to ISO 13679:2002. Thetests incorporated the 95 % VME andwere conducted with bending load,i.e. dogleg severity was 20°/100ft. Inaddition compression loads up to100% efficiency have been applied
on the test samples, with different no-minal pipe outside diameters in com-bination with various grades and wallthicknesses. In all tests the OCTG semipremium connection VAroughneckkept brilliant tightness under severecombined loads.
TENSION TO FAILURE TESTSNeither connection leakages norstructural failures were detected in allperformed failure tests.
FATIGUE TESTSIn deviated wells the pipes are subjectto bending stresses that vary depen-ding on the well design. Additionally,if the string is rotated during installa-tion or cementing, the pipe connecti-ons are subject to rotational bending,i.e. cyclic compression and tensileloads exist.
To study this fatigue scenario, voestal-pine Tubulars built a rotating fatiguemachine and tested the connectionunder severe rotational bendingloads that simulated different well de-viations.
VAroughneck has been tested up to 1,100,000 revolutions without failurein the fatigue machine at voestalpineTubulars, see picture on page 11.
Further information on test resultsavailable upon request.
11
Fatigue limit test with rotating fatigue test frame at voestalpine Tubulars
Due to the high torque values anticipated in the well de-sign, a connection with torque capabilities higher thanthose of API connections was needed.
During installation of VAroughneck, torque-turn-monitoringwas used to demonstrate proper make-up, identify possibledifficulties and reveal any possible risks.
The recorded torque-turn-diagrams from field make-upshowed good and reproducible results. Therefore, themake-up can be done without a torque-turn-monitoringsystem, if it is ensured that the given yield torque is not ex-ceeded.

MAKE-UPBased on numerous internal tests andtorque-turn-monitoring during fieldtests, make-up can be done withouta torque-turn-monitoring system, if itis ensured that the given yield torqueis not exceeded
RUNNING PROCEDUREFor running please use same proce-dure as for API Buttress except make-up to position:The triangle stamp shall be used forequipment set-up check only. After finish make-up to torque the couplingshould be close to baseline.
A more detailed running procedure isavailable as a download on our webpage www.voestalpine.com/tubulars
