IFAD TAG 853 - VietnamFodder Adoption Project
Output 1: Activities
• Identification of project sites, partners and work plans• Identification of actors, linkages, practices and habits
related to fodder innovations with constant re-evaluation• Development of Geographical Information Systems on
pilot sites in relation to fodder interventions • Evaluation of livestock market environment influencing
fodder demand, access and utilisation • Creating linkages between different cattle value chain
stakeholders

IFAD TAG 853 - VietnamFodder Adoption Project
1) Identification of project sites
Two sites in VietnamHanoi
Ho Chi Minh City
Ea Kar, DaklakThis hilly district is a transit way for livestock trading from Thailand and Cambodia to HMC.Due to its close location to the growing markets of HMC and other urban centres meat production offers good income opportunities.
Ky Anh, Ha Tinh80% of the population employed in agriculture.Rice based multi-purpose smallholder systems dominate. The growing industrial development opens market opportunities for meat and vegetables

2) Evaluation of actors, linkages, practices and habits related to fodder innovations
• National Research partners: – National Institute of Animal Science
(NIAS), Hanoi – Tay Nguyen University, Daklak
• Implementation & Extension– Local authorities– Provincial stakeholders– National level support
• Beneficiaries– Smallholder – Trader
National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS)
Tay Nguyen University (TNU)
IFAD TAG 853 - VietnamFodder Adoption Project
• Baseline survey on smallholder systems in the region• Multi-stakeholder group discussions to identify linkages
and constraints• Year by year re-evaluation of identified key issues
2) Evaluation of actors, linkages, practices and habits related to fodder innovations

Tay Nguyen University (TNU)
IFAD TAG 853 - VietnamFodder Adoption Project
3) Development of Geographical Information Systems at pilot sites in relation to fodder interventions
• GIS data on forage production systems and their adoption
• GIS training courses for local staff– Basic functions of GIS– Analysing information through GIS– Interpretation of GIS derived
information
• Develop basic maps

4) Evaluation of livestock market environment influencing fodder demand, access and utilisation
• Rapid Appraisal on evaluation of livestock market environment influencing fodder demand, access, and utilization (both research sites)
• Using the acquired information for a participatory market study with representatives of farmer clubs, traders and extension workers (Ea Kar)
National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS)
Tay Nguyen University (TNU)
IFAD TAG 853 - VietnamFodder Adoption Project
5) Creating linkages between different cattle value chain stakeholders
• Increasing interaction between producer and market system actors
• Facilitating the establishment of farmer groups

IFAD TAG 853 - VietnamFodder Adoption Project
Results
• Production and market surveys
– Major stakeholder analyses (2007, 2009, both sites)– Forage adoption & cattle production survey (2007,
2010, Ea Kar)– Baseline survey (2007-2008, Ky Anh)– Cattle production surveys (2008, Ky Anh)– Rapid Market Appraisals (2008-2009, both sites)– Participatory market study (2009, Ea Kar)

IFAD TAG 853 - VietnamFodder Adoption Project
Results from stakeholder analyses
• Major stakeholder analyses in 2007 and 2009
– 20 different stakeholders involved in cattle value chain improvement in the area were identified
– Their role in the value chain was analyzed– According to their role they were grouped into 7 major
categories (beneficiaries, decision makers, etc.)– The roles of existing policies and previous projects
were identified

IFAD TAG 853 - VietnamFodder Adoption Project
Results from baseline survey
• Baseline survey in 2008-09– Detailed household and land use characterization
(production systems, income, age distribution, gender issues, education)
– Very diverse cropping and livestock systems– Cattle kept for multiple purposes: breeding, draught and
fattening– Mainly extensive, free grazing and low input cut and
carry and gathering systems using local breeds– Consequently high labor requirements– Lack of improved breeding systems

Tay Nguyen University (TNU)
IFAD TAG 853 - VietnamFodder Adoption Project
Results from cattle production survey
• Cattle production survey in 2008– Identification of existing cattle production systems:
intensive fattening, intensive cow-calf production, extensive mixed systems
– Survey on feed resource use and feeding practices for each system
– Production performance and options for improvement
National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS)
Tay Nguyen University (TNU)
IFAD TAG 853 - VietnamFodder Adoption Project
Results from RMA
• Rapid Market Appraisal in 2008-09– The market for beef cattle produced in Ea Kar
expanded from local markets only (RMA 2004) to most big cities in South Vietnam: Da Lat, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh.
– The quality of beef from Ea Kar met the trader and customer demands in these new markets.
– The productivity of the production system increased markedly through system change

Tay Nguyen University (TNU)
IFAD TAG 853 - VietnamFodder Adoption Project
Results from participatory market study
• Participatory market study in 2009
– Identifying opportunities and creating linkages between producers and other market chain stakeholders
– Resulting in supply contracts
National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS)
Tay Nguyen University (TNU)
IFAD TAG 853 - VietnamFodder Adoption Project
Results
• Information processing tools
– Detailed livelihood and production system information on community level employing GIS (and FEAST)
– Using GIS produced maps to stimulate discussion and questioning
