Enhancing Pre-Writing Skills for Your Little OneWriting is more of a learnt characteristic than something to be born with and if you follow

a few steps, you are sure to make writing fun for your little one, without making it sound

like a learning activity.

Children between the ages of 3 and 5 wish to communicate via writing just the way

grownups do. They love the thought of writing notes, making lists, etc. Don’t stop them

from doing so, because when children make-believe to write, it is a sign of their

understanding the functions of print. They begin to be acquainted with both reading as

well as writing. If you follow a few steps given below

you are sure to make writing fun for your little one

without making it sound like a learning activity. After all,

writing is more of a learnt characteristic than something

to be born with.

1. Coach them: Primarily, practice, language

skills and expression abilities play a vital role in

children’s growth and development. For this,

you can teach them new words on a daily basis

with meanings in an easy to understand

language. For instance, you can show your toddler the picture of the new word or

use it in a sentence. This gives them a comprehensible viewpoint about the word,

its meaning as well as its usage.

2. Let them dream: Egg on your child to envision and aspire. This is the best way

to start off a child’s writing journey. It will require a lot of tolerance and time,

but in the end it will be worth the effort. When children express their imagination,

don’t put it away, give confidence to them, because what appears as unreal and

gibberish is very real to children.

3. Involve them in activities: Kids learn to write not

only when you make them write, but also when

you’re involved in other activities. For example, you

could play catch, draw, cook or bake with them,

etc. Help them trace letters, shapes or numbers

with their fingers. For this you can ask play card

games, sing the alphabet song or whatever suits

your child’s mood.

4. Give them the writing material:  An ideal parent

is the one who knows the needs and requirements

of the child without overdoing it. Therefore, give your child paper, crayons,

pencils, and other items.

Besides these pointers, keep in mind that your child’s posture is correct. He uses the

desk and sits erect on a chair. Involve them in activities while you ask them to pay

attention, so that they can repeat after you. Strengthen their movements by

incorporating activities that use their arms, shoulders and wrists. The basic idea is to

develop the hand and eye co-ordination. In any case, a rich language environment is

the base for good writing.
