Because Cherokee County is not only the location of our hospital, it is our home. Most of our physicians and staff live right here. Our children go to school with yours and we shop at the local grocery stores with you. Since becoming part of the community in 1997, Northside Hospital-Cherokee is committed to keeping this county great. Because, after all, its our home, too.

WE VOLUNTEER AND DONATE TO CHEROKEE SCHOOLS AND ORGANIZATIONS. BECAUSE THATS WHAT NEIGHBORS DO.

  • Dear Readers,

    Thank you for your comments!

We appreciate your compliments and interest in articles within our last issue on articles in our last issue (Enjoy! Cherokee, Summer) but credit where credit is due must be given.

The accolades go to the terrific guys who climbed Kilimanjaro (Cherokee to Kilimanjaro). They did all the work and we were delighted to tell the story to you.

The same is true of the fabulous orchids raised right here practically in our backyard. (Epitome of Elegance) Ours is but to appreciate flowersespecially orchidsfrom afar, knowing our propensity toward plant fatalities. (Although our phalaenopsis is currently alive and well, were keeping our fingers crossed for the new buds bravely popping up.)

Our bright, young photographer you read about (ShootinDirt) had his article up and running on his website faster than some cars make it around the speedway track. It will be fun to keep up with him.

This issue has a different flavorone of transformation. The wood from old barns destined for extinction, crafted in the hands of craftsman Dan Hodge into custom furniture and artful things. Read about how the changing season brings Autumn weddings to challenging June for the calendars top spot. Or, read what we can do to help the student in our family get back into a new school yearand like it.

Enjoy! Cherokee articles dont grow cold. If you miss an issue, just click on enjoycherokee.com. Turn back the pages and catch up.

    Enjoy.

An engineer and communications visionary, Albert Harrison, purchased it in 1958. He planned well into the future, founding the company with good business practices and the importance of working with and for the community. The company is still locally owned and operated by the family, with Doug Harrison serving as president.

With roots planted deep with the setting of the first telephone poles, the company has diligently grown to meet the demands of a modern world. In 1990, ETC had more fiber optics in place than any company in North Georgia. Today, they remain on the forefront of technologys cutting edgeoffering high-speed Internet, cable television, phone, security and other essential services for residential and business customers throughout their service area.

Take care of the customer and the business will take care of itself.

    - Albert Harrison, 1956

For decades, the strength and success of ETC has derived from their dedication toward exemplary customer service. Security

Founded in 1903, the Ellijay Telephone Company,

known as ETC, is a well-established, diversified communications company

Coordinator, Brent Dotson says, ETC is resolved to partnering with the community, and considers their commitment both a responsibility and privilege.

ETC is most proud of their employees, which they consider their most important assets. ETC understands that with local technicians and staff who live and work within our communities, it becomes personal...its about friends who care about helping you with the best in communication and security needs for your home or business.

Community Counts... Support and presence of ETC is evident in many of the local activities that take place throughout the area. Youll often see many of the 148 employees present or participating in community events and projects. Along with various health awareness campaigns such as Relay for Life and the March of Dimes, ETC also strongly supports children and youth programs, evident in their participation of $120,000.00 annual funding for the Focus On Youth education scholarship program. To help encourage good safety practices and prevention, ETC provides all types of instructional and informative safety materials for individuals and

Recently, a customer of the Ellijay Telephone Company (ETC) called the office with one purpose in mind. She wanted to share how much she appreciated the technicians attention to detail, his courteous and polite manner and the care he demonstrated in the installation of her new security system.

Depend on ETC... ETC provides a complete array of communication and security services for all home and residential customers in their coverage area. ETC reaches into five counties of North Georgia and Polk County, Tennessee. They offer a variety of business and residential solutions ready for the growing demands of a society that is becoming more technologically advanced each day. People are communicating in so many different ways, explains marketing director, Nathan Collier. Our goal as an organization is to stay current and progressive with the technology constantly being introduced.

Businesses in Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina appreciate voice, video, Internet wireless and the finest in ETC Security Systems. To supplement technological information and share knowledge, ETC created The Professional Services Group in 2003 as a direct response. As new technologies become available and continues to change and grow, so does The Professional Service Group.

Expanding Services...Security for Home and Business ETC expanded its service into home and business security

in 2002, offering customers security systems with the latest in technology and equipment available.

The first authorized Honeywell Security dealer in the North Georgia area, ETC has introduced security systems customers have come to expect and appreciate.

Youll also be pleased to learn that ETC maintains its own local UL monitoring centeralways on duty24 hours a day. Installed in 2010, the ETC Central Alarm Monitoring Station also monitors for several other security dealers. In case of any emergency, the proper authorities such as police, fire or medical are notified immediately. With 24-hour monitoring, no additional action is required on your part.

It provides peace of mind knowing that smart sensors will detect movement indoors is an advantage, too. It listens for sounds of breaking glass to alert and guard against intruders. Such sensors add to the effectiveness of your alarm system, providing whole-house protection. And, you can also receive ETC alerts on your smart phone if any motion is sensed within a protected zone. Environmental sensors are a plus, too, and help prevent a disaster before it starts. Ideal for kitchens and bathrooms, laundry rooms and basements, these detectors can notify you of flooding, leaks and extreme temperatureshelping to minimize the risk of dangerous conditions or extreme damages to home and valuables.

Agriculture has always played an important role in the history of Cherokee County. Most local farms were family-owned and endured through generations. The work and vitality of these farms radiated from the barns that housed everything from equipment to livestock. As the area has grown, family farms have been replaced by office buildings subdivisions and shopping centers. Barns are disappearing. However, with attention placed on conservation of natural resources, lumber from old barns is being reclaimed and transformed into beautiful new home furnishings.

Dan Hodge, owner of Creative Interiors and Craftworks brings vision and talent to provide new life for old barn wood and other materials destined for the junk pile. Hodge comes from a long line of craftsmen, fascinated with wood artistry since childhood. Working with his grandfather, a home builder in Raleigh, North Carolina, as soon as he could carry a two-by-four across the construction site. There he worked with a father and son crew employed by his grandfather and learned about construction from the ground up.

At that time, crews worked on all aspects of building without sub-contractors. The team he was mentored by was especially gifted in cabinetry, through them he learned his love of transforming something plain and functional into something that could be functional and beautiful.

After his retirement in February 2013, he knew it was time to fulfill a dream, to have is own workshop where he could pursue his love of woodworking. His goal was to have a location where he could house all of the needed equipment and be able to keep active projects out without having to put them away to park the car in the garage. Soon, with his wife Nancy and family friend Jeff Mansfield, the concept of Creative Interiors and Craftworks was born.

The original plan for the business was to provide a workroom as well as a store front to display and sell his custom designed

Long-Term Care Insurance: Who Needs It?

Not me, you say. Youre young. Youre healthy. You eat right, exercise, and get regular check-ups. Just a few of the reasons people today are living longer. In fact, since the 1960s, life expectancy has increased between 1.5 and two years each decade.1

But before you get too caught up in the good news, you may want to think down the road a bit. What are the odds that youll enjoy this same level of good health when youre 80, 90, or even 100? Especially since approximately 70% of people over the age of 65 will require long-term care at some point.2

With people living longer, protecting your financial assets so that youll have enough money to last during your lifetime is every bit as important as accumulating them in the first place. But with health care costs rising every year, one illness or disability can wipe out a persons savings due to ongoing medical expenses. According to Genworth Financial, a leading provider of long-term care insurance for individuals, the average cost for a private nursing home room in 2013 was more than $80,000 per year.3

Footing the bill. First of all, you need to know that Medicare generally doesnt pay for long-term health care. It pays only for skilled nursing facilities or home health care that falls under the category of medical necessities. While it may be possible to use your savings to pay for long-term health care expenses, several factors enter into the picture. For example, youll need to determine how much money may be needed. And to figure out that dollar amount would require estimating the type and length of service that may be necessary.

Additionally, income and assets that youve set aside for other retirement goals may be jeopardized if health care costs are higher than expected. And while you could invest for the potential expenses, investment risk may be a factor. Putting money in a conservative account may not keep up with inflationary costs of health care. A more aggressive account may be affected by market downturns when money is needed.

A potentially more efficient and effective alternative is an insurance policy that would provide the dollars needed to cover long-term health care expenses. Consider some of the advantages:

Policy guarantees. A guarantee, backed by the claims-paying ability of the issuing company, provides the assurance that money will be available to pay long-term care expenses when needed.

Investment freedom. You wont need to be concerned with investment performance of assets set aside to pay expenses since an insurance policy shifts the responsibility for asset availability to the insurance company.

Leverage. The capital required to purchase insurance protection is typically less than that needed to pay for expense due to the leverage insurance provides. As a result, you may have additional capital

Tax benefit. Qualified long-term care insurance policies pay an income-tax-free benefit.

In addition to combining long-term care benefits and death benefits, some products even offer a return-of-premium feature, which ensures that if the policy is surrendered prior to claim, the original premiums paid will be returned to the policy owner. Bottom line, youre the only one who can determine what kind of policy is right for you. Work with your Financial Advisor to determine a plan to meet your needs and protect your financial future.

furniture. Since opening day in October 2013, the store which offers everything from home furnishings, accessories and interior design services, has been blessed with constant custom orders. Hodge currently has 22 pieces on order, so his inventory will have to wait.

A longtime resident of Cherokee County, Hodge was recently entrusted with two local barns scheduled for demolition. Located off of Sixes Road, the Rutledge family donated a barn from their property for him to incorporate in his custom furniture. The other barn, located on Highway 92 was donated by the Butterworth family after the property was sold for a new housing development. The lumber and some interesting artifacts have been salvaged and are ready to be transformed.

One exceptional aspect of reclaimed lumber from family farms is the ability of family members to select certain boards to be included in a custom piece. For example a member of the Butterworth family, has carefully chosen lumber for a custom dining room table. Each piece of reclaimed lumber is unique based on not only the natural wood characteristics but also how it has been affected by time and weather. Dan is unwilling to compromise the quality of the characteristics he finds in the lumber. He uses Briwax, a special finishing wax that stains and polishes without covering up the beauty of the wood.

As our community grows, it is comforting that with the talent of people like Dan Hodge, a small piece of our history can be preserved, even if it is in a different form.

For more information on Dan Hodge or Creative Interiors & Craftworks please visit them at 1428 Towne Lake Parkway, Suite 100 in Woodstock or by phone at 678-402-8386.

(Recycling History continued from page 23)

On The Cover - Butterworth Barn In 1946, Edith and Glenn Butterworth purchased a 27 acre tract of land in Woodstock, Georgia where they began to build a home and a family. In 1948, a barn was constructed from oak and yellow pine lumber harvested from that piece of property. The home place was an active, working farm where the family grew vegetables and raised cattle. The cattle, mostly dairy stock, gave them income from milk and butter that they sold. The Butterworth family lived on the property until it was sold in 2014. The old barn, over 60 years old, had witnessed many cold and rainy winters and hot, dry summers. It had also witnessed a 27 acre tract of land turn into a family home. The decision was made by the family to donate the weathered old structure to craftsman, Dan Hodge, to reclaim the lumber for use in his creation of custom furniture. Several pieces of furniture have since been created for members of the Butterworth clan from selected pieces of the salvaged wood. A beautiful dining table and occasional tables now grace the current homes of the family. For Christmas of 2013, black and white photographs mounted in barn wood frames, crafted by Hodge were special gifts for the family. Some of the lumber salvage from Mrs. Butterworths barn remains, waiting to be used in the creation of special pieces of furniture from the workshop of Dan Hodge.

Also expect steep price drops on jewelry, clothing and cologne-perfume gift sets on the first big shopping day of the holiday season.

Not to be left out, the first Monday following Thanksgiving, look to online sources for even bigger savings (including free shipping) during Cyber Monday sales.

DECEMBER brings chances for bargains to guarantee Happy Holidays! If you havent already found bargains during annual Christmas sales, make the holidays even happier by putting off holiday shopping until the last minute. The closer it gets to December 25, the more drastic the markdowns.

Of course, after-Christmas sales are the time to stock up on drastically reduced prices on Christmas decorations, wrapping supplies and gift tags to round out a full month of finding the best shopping bargains of the year.

Amid shopping for the latest laptop or the coolest accessories for the dorm room, students can benefit by planning strategies to address some of the bumps in the road that many first-time college students encounter.

To help with the transition, weve compiled a list of dos and donts to help your teen earn an A+ in transitioning to college.

    1. Do Prepare To Be On Your OwnFor many teenagers, heading off to college may bring new expectations of responsibility. For students who live on campus, parents are not there to plan schedules, offer wake-up calls, or give reminders of deadlines. Mastering the basics of time management becomes a hurdle for many college freshmen. A successful transition begins with getting and using a calendar to keep track of class times, assignment due dates, and other important tasks from practice sessions to time for fun with friends. Dont worry about the type of calendar; cell phones, online calendars, or paper calendars all work great. Students should just pick the one that feels comfortable and be consistent about using it.

Money management is another area in which many students struggle. When they arrive at college, some students encounter financial situations for the first time. These may include paying bills, setting spending priorities, or holding down a job to help with expenses. Parents can help by discussing finances with their students and helping them map out a monthly budget.

Helping college students prepare to make healthy choices can have a huge impact on their initial success. Students often encounter the dreaded Freshman 15 a weight gain

brought on by increased stress levels, unlimited meal plans in college dining facilities, reduced hours of sleep, and difficulty in finding time or energy to exercise. Talk with your student about making healthy decisions and developing strategies for handling the stresses of college life.

    2. Dont Think You Have To Go It Alone Many students struggle with feeling homesick as they are away from their families and friends for the first time. This is a normal part of the transition process, and students should make an effort to build friendships with other students at their school. Campuses offer lots of ways for students to meet from getting to know roommates and neighbors in the residence halls to joining campus organizations and taking part in intramurals or other campus activities. Even if your student is living at home and commuting to campus for class, he should take time to make friends at college. The interaction with peers is an important part of the college experience.

Beyond the social aspects, campuses also offer a number of resources to help students succeed. Just a few of the options include tutoring services, advising, career development, and campus ministries. Be sure your student is aware of the resources available at his school and encourage him to ask for help if he needs it.

    3. Do Figure Out Where You are Headed The reasons students enroll in college are diverse. Some go to college with the goal of becoming a doctor or a teacher or an engineer. Others are focused on playing intercollegiate athletics or becoming a leader on campus. Keeping sight of the vision that brought your daughter to college can help her stick with it when the going gets tough.

Many successful college students set goals for themselves. While having a long-term goal in mind (like getting accepted to medical school) is helpful, it is equally important for your student to set short-term goals that will help her get from where she is now to where she wants to be. She should create goals that she can track, such as earning a specific grade by mid-term or making the deans list during her first semester. Then, she should think through the steps she needs to take to be on the right track. Those steps become her action plan for success.

    4. Dont Forget The Academics Whatever the reasons that students enroll at college, everyone faces the challenge of college-level coursework. The transition from high school to college can be a tough one, but with a little advance preparation your student can succeed. Your son should understand that college professors will expect him to take responsibility for his education. At the beginning of each course, he will be given a syllabus covering what the class will learn and usually what assignments are due when. Students should hold on to that syllabus and refer to it often. In it, the professor has outlined what a student needs to do to succeed.

Students also need to be sure to allow time and find the right space for studying. Reading assignments in a dorm room where a roommate is playing video games or chatting with friends might not be allow for the needed level of concentration. Instead, your son may consider a trip to the library or another quiet space on campus that allows him to focus on his work.

College is an exciting time, and with the right preparation, students can have a great experience as they make the transition to college life.
