Panther Springs BringsNew Wildlife to GatorlandTwo representatives of one of the most endangered members of the large cat family on earth, the Florida panther, made their debut at the all-new Panther Springs exhibit at Gatorland. Neiko and Lucy, a brother and sister pair, are a cross between the extremely endangered Florida panther and a Texas cougar. Shortly after birth at a Florida rescue and rehabilitation center in 2006, the pair were adopted and raised in the loving care of a Florida conservationist until their arrival at Gatorland.

The Florida Panther is an endangered subspecies of the American cougar and is the only cougar population east of the Mississippi River. This stealthy predator once ranged through all of Florida to northern Georgia and the southern parts of Tennessee, and as far

west as East Texas. The only breeding population now exists in a small area of southern Florida in portions of the Big Cypress National Preserve, Everglades National Park, and the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge.

Historical persecution severely depleted the population in the early 20th cen-tury and the Florida panther has been protected from legal hunting since 1958. This large cat was listed as an endangered species in 1967 and was named theofficial animal of Florida in 1982. Continued habitat loss and degradation from human population growth caused the number of panthers to plunge to about 20 in the mid ‘90s. Due to such a small, isolated population, inbreeding andbirth defects pushed these beautiful cats to the brink of extinction.

In an effort to save the population, eight female Texas Cougars were intro-duced in 1995. This “experiment” proved successful in providing genetic diversity and healthier kittens, so much so that the wild population is now es-timated between 100 and 160. Without the introduction of the Texas cougars, scientists estimate the number of Florida panthers would be about 10 today and incapable of avoiding complete extinction.

Even More New Wildlife . . .Gatorland recently acquired over 70 animals from the closed family-owned Florida theme park, Everglades Wonder Gardens. The transfer encompasses a wide variety of Florida wildlife including giant alligators, raccoons, scarlet ibis, bobcats, huge pythons and boa constrictors, rattlesnakes, white-tailed deer, and American Crocodiles including “Bone-crusher,” a giant measuring over fourteen feet.

In 1936, Lester Piper opened the Everglades Wonder Gardens in Bonita Springs with the hope of educating people about Florida’s vanishing wildlife and provid-ing a rescue facility for injured animals. Lester’s grandson, David Piper, grew up in the park and took the reins when his grandfather passed away in 1992. The his-toric roadside attraction continued to thrill guests with their collection of giant reptiles and unique attractions until recently when David and his wife announced they would be moving to Georgia for health reasons.

“Our families have known each other for well over 50 years,” says Mark McHugh, Gatorland’s President & CEO. “So it is truly an honor to bring so many of the Ev-erglades Wonder Garden’s beautiful animals to Gatorland where they can carry on the Piper family’s dream of entertaining and educating visitors.”

Internationally recognized photographer John Brady and his family will take over operations of the Everglades Wonder Gardens in the Historic District of Bonita Springs. The new operators will focus on the botanical gardens, which has some of the most unique species of both native and exotic specimens from South America. The history and heritage of the gardens is of great importance to the community, and Brady will continue to uphold its legacy through operation of a museum in the main building. Gatorland is a 110-acre theme park and wildlife preserve, combining “Old Florida” charm with exciting new exhibits and entertainment. The park opened as a roadside attraction in 1949. Today, it provides affordable-priced family fun with thousands of alligators, crocodiles, an aviary, breeding marsh with observation tower, petting zoo, nature walk, educa-tional wildlife programs, Gatorland award-winning gift shop, Florida’s best train-ride, restaurant, Gator Gully Splash Park and one-of-a-kind reptilian shows including the Gator Wrestlin’ Show, Gator Jumparoo and the Up-close Encounters Show, the new White Gator Swamp and the Screamin’ Gator Zip Line. TheKissimmee SculptureExperienceis an annual exhibit of outdoor sculptures placed throughout Downtown Kissim-mee, blending the historic, cultural and artistic aspects within the downtown area.

“Going into our seventh year, the Kissimmee Sculpture Experience is now one of the largest in the Southeast-ern United States. We look forward to showcasing more unique pieces to continue the beautification of Down-town Kissimmee,” said Brianne Stefek, executive director of Kissimmee Main Street.

The world’s most comprehensive attraction devoted to the space shuttle opened last summer at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. Building on the global phenomenon that is The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal Orlando Resort and Warner Bros. Entertainment is completing an expansion of historic proportion with the entirely new themed environment, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley.

Scheduled to open in the spring, the world’s first centrally-themed, multi-park experience expands The Wizarding World of Harry Potter across both Universal Orlando theme parks and allows Universal’s creative team to bring an unparalleled vision to this unique project. The new area will bring to life some of the experiences and places found in and around London in the Harry Potter books and films, offering brand-new adventures for fans and theme park guests from around the world.

Diagon Alley and ‘London’ will be located within the Universal Studios Florida theme park, which is adjacent to Universal’s Islands of Adventure theme park, where guests now experience Hogwarts and Hogsmeade. The new area within Universal Studios will be just as expansive, immersive and authentic as the existing themed environment.

And – just like in the books and films – guests will be able to travel between ‘London’ and Hogsmeade aboard the Hogwarts Express. To bring Diagon Alley and ‘London’ to life, Universal’s creative team is working closely with Warner Bros. and the production design team from the Harry Potter films – just as it did for Hogwarts and Hogsmeade.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade opened at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in June 2010 as a fully immersive Harry Potter themed environment - bringing to life the bestselling books by J.K. Rowling and the blockbuster feature films from Warner Bros. Since that time, it has become a global phenomenon, entertaining millions of people from around the world.
