Mill Green Museum & Mill - The museum is housed in an old MillHouse dating back to the sixteenth century. It has three small exhibi-tion galleries and is set in a beautiful garden. St Albans City WalksCity Walks start outside the Old Town Hall in Market Place, St Albansand take from an hour to an hour and a half. Tickets should preferablybe obtained in advance from the Tourist Information Centre inside theOld Town Hall, but may also be purchased from the Guide on duty.

If you are planning to bring a group to St Albans and wouldlike to include a walk as part of your trip it is advisable tobook in advance to avoid disappointment. Contact the TouristInformation Centre on 01727 864511, they will be very pleasedto help you.

A Round with Sam RyderWalk the course of Samuel Ryder's life. In a journey tracing the remarkable events of one of St Albans most prominent citizens, wewalk the length of a golf course. Then after 18 holes, we finallyunderstand and know the man. Aristocrats, Paupers and PhilanthropistsThis enjoyable stroll round the St. Peter's area features the great andthe (sometimes!) good of St Albans and the various buildings and charitable institutions they generously gave to the city. Their stories are all quite fascinating - but then some were among the most powerful people in the Kingdom!

Beating the BoundsThe ancient ceremony of Beating the Bounds will be re-enacted onSunday May 9th starting from Kingsbury Mill in St Michael’s at 2pm.Led by the Mayor the procession follows the 1327 town boundary – a distance of just over 4 miles that takes about 2 1/2 hours to completeincluding “bumping” various dignitaries on the way!

Crime and PunishmentLocal crimes ranged from murder in the Cathedral to theft worth twopence, and the punishments were often disproportionately harsh. This walk will take in the 1831 Courtroom, the two buildings that were prisons in times past and point out the site of such nicetiesas the stocks and the pillory. Not to be missed for the stout-hearted!

It is quite a challenge to guess the ages of the houses in fascinating FishpoolStreet - join the guide and see for yourselves!

Ghostly Goings-onThis is an extremely popular and atmospheric walk that introducessome of the ghosts of St Albans and relates their sad stories. We can'tguarantee whom you might see - only where you might find them, forthey do exist! This walk is not suitable for very young children.

Historic WalkCovering 1200 years in about 90 minutes, this excellent walk gives an overview of the most important people, buildings and events in St Albans from the Monastic to the modern.

Monks, Mysteries and Mischief Monks were an incredibly diversified and talented band of brothers -theirs was a powerful, self-sufficient community on whom many othersdepended, but occasionally human failings and weakness would creep in.To find out more, join us on a visit to their world.

The Street War MemorialsThe ten street war memorials within the Abbey Parish are unique inthe U.K. and are the focus of a profoundly moving walk. Hear the stories behind a few of the 110 names of those who died, from thepoor to the privileged, but all from one small area. This walk is alwayson the nearest Sunday to November 11th as well as on the 11th itself.Ticket sales will be donated to The Royal British Legion.

The War of the RosesAlthough two battles were fought in St Albans in this dynastic strugglebetween the houses of Lancaster and York, this walk concentrates onthe first one, which took place in and around the marketplace. Hear about the reasons why, the personalities involved and the outcome. There’s even a Shakespearean connection! Come and join the battle – no armour needed!

Town, Crown and CloisterSt Albans Abbey was founded by one king and destroyed by anothernearly 750 years later, and many monarchs have meddled in the middle!The sometimes uneasy relationship between the crown, the town andthe abbey features on this free walk for Heritage Open Weekend and itis a combined venture between the City and Cathedral Guides to linkthe inside and outside of the Abbey Church with the town.

Tudor St AlbansThe Tudor kings and queens played an important part in the history ofSt Albans. One king closed the monastery which had been the reasonfor the town's existence, a queen ordered the burning of a Protestantmartyr in Romeland and another queen visited the town frequently to stay with a favourite minister. Find out more about the Tudor connection by taking this new walk.

Victorian St Albans A walk that takes us from the medieval to the age of steam, the railway,factories and even the pioneering days of cinema (hear about the firstever film advertisement!). This was the age of massive expansion forthe town, including a new prison whose front entrance will be recognisable to all fans of ‘Porridge’.

The Roman TheatreThis is one of the finest examples of a Roman Theatre in Britain. Also within the site are the remains of a 3rd century townhouse, withan underground shrine as well as a parade of shops facing onto WatlingStreet. Guides are present on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank HolidayMondays from April 3 to October 31 between 2:30pm and 4:30pm.

Talks on Roman BritainWe give short illustrated talks on topics concerned with Verulamiumand the Roman world in the Lecture Room at Verulamium Museum at3:00pm on either Saturdays or Sundays. An entrance fee is payable atthe Museum for visitors from outside the St Albans District Councilarea. Our talks are free.

Verulamium in a NutshellThis walk combines the Roman Theatre with Verulamium Park and its hidden Roman Town. The walk is free for Heritage Open Weekend.However, there is a charge (party rate) for the Roman Theatre forwalks on other dates. Meet outside the Verulamium Museum.
