Having a Ball…

It’s time to frock up! The Pretty Valley Spring Ball is on Saturday 23rd, September.

Barry Jones of Pretty Valley Lodge and Ropers Apartments is once again hosting the gala night of nights with his Spring Ball. Barry’s tremendous generosity and community spirit is appreciated by all and on behalf of everyone, thanks Barry. It’s going to be a cracking night! With so much snow still covering everything, there is no rest for any of the crews who keep the resort in tip top shape.I’d like to acknowledge the many teams who deliver such an outstanding product for the guests. In no particular order - well actually, the season wouldn’t have been off to such a great start without the assistance of the snow making crew… their hard work delivered excellent results and laid the foundations for what is now a ripping snow pack. The grooming teams on piste and XC dealt with more snow than some have seen is quite some time and the regular ‘rebuilds’ ensured consistent quality everywhere. All that snow helped the Terrain Parks crew provide undoubtedly Australia’s best features. To the unseen teams, in operations, the outdoor crews and maintenance, snow

clearing and de-icing - the guys that do the stuff when we are all asleep or not watching… thanks. To the Ski Patrol crew for their hard work, dedication and expertise - great job! The Oversnow and ATS crew at 4-Site… when they aren’t delivering people, packages or freight around the village, they are creating spaces out of thin air for parking! To the Visitor Information teams, the volunteer green jackets and the friendliest ‘towies’ anywhere - thanks. There are many more to thank, but I’ll hold for another week. Speaking of another week, October 7th… McKayos! The bumper season has meant this year’s race was deferred to ensure riders would actually need bikes, not skis or boards. The track this year is once again EPIC with a few variations, including a village route, dropping into ‘Discharge,’ then shoot and point, as Australia’s only mass start, snow - dirt - road enduro is back for a third year of Kayos (chaos). Picture yourself, bike at the ready, poised on the face of Mt. McKay, with hundreds of other adrenalin loaded MTBer’s… 23kms ahead and 1,209 metres WAY down the hill is the finish line at Bogong Village. This award winning enduro race isn’t for the faint hearted, but the bragging rights are priceless. Get involved, register and book accommodation here: http://www.fallscreek.

com.au/listing/mckayos-falls-creek/.Happy School Holidays to all who are enjoying the break between third term and the final weeks of the year. What a bonus to have the mountain in such amazing condition. If you are looking for things to do…as if there aren’t enough already, I would HIGHLY recommend taking your family, mates etc ‘out the back’ with Steve Lee (note: strong intermediate skiers advised). The thrill of ‘off-piste’ skiing without ‘earning your turns’ is a real treat. With plenty to explore there are no shortage of runs and it’s the only type of experience offered in Australia. Alternatively, grab the kids and head out on a snowmobile ride across the high plains, splurge on a scenic heli flight or take the shuttle to Hotham for the day. Try cross country skiing for a more value oriented option (it’s not as easy as you’d think…trust me!)… visit the Museum and then take the guided arts and heritage trail using the Falls Creek User Guide, with the local school kids as your interactive guides… or just get out there and hit the mountain… there’s oodles of terrain to choose from.Foodie Tip of the Week - for the Kids: Gateway Café… the BEST vanilla custard slice EVER, Easy Eats Nutella Donuts - addictive (allegedly), Snonuts - every conceivable variety of delicious… Jerry’s Stall - homemade cakes, biscuits, pies and goulash… and the best ‘on-piste’ burger is at Dicky Knees at Ruined Castle… to name but a few of the options. Now - “c’arn the Catters”…maul those Crows! •Stuart Smythe CEOFalls Creek Resort Management

A Joy Full Camp

Last weekend was the final DWA camp of the season - Members Camp. Many thanks to all the mountain staff of

Falls Creek who have helped DWA provide unforgettable experiences for our members and carers, and their families and friends. From the start of the season I have looked forward to DWA Members Camp. It topped off my season to meet you all and coordinate your best camp experience ever. Let’s do it again next season!Mark guided Andrew, helping him return to the sport he loved before his accident twenty years ago. Following on from their lesson with Jack, they focused on adjusting body position. Using tip-clamps Andrew’s technique improved as did his confidence. ‘Way to go’ Andrew and welcome back to the snow!Jeff and Ben guided Ashley for his first snow experience. Ash was immediately able to perform parallel turns! Your intuition surprised us all but we were more impressed by your determination to master your snow-plough! Good work Ash.Sacha and Fraser welcomed back Damian for his second DWA camp this season. Damian thoroughly enjoyed his guide’s perfect execution of the role - ‘shadow guide.’ Fraser got taken out by a rogue skier heading for Damian. Fraser thought it was well worth it because you beat your record number of runs

this time. Well done Damian!Marino and David guided Alex, who just loved being on snow again! I watched as Alex practiced heel and toe-side and really started to control his stopping. Alex also brought a great warmth and energy to the camp. Thanks for the good times mate!Dan and Mike guided the ‘go-getter’, Natasha. Tash loved the challenges she faced, especially going down Last Hoot at the blind drop-off of the cat-track-crossing. Tash’s screams of fear become joy were heard for quite a distance when she came across that surprising part of the trail. Good on you for wanting more Tash!Libby and Anna guided first-timer and ‘speed demon’ Gina. Gina clipped into her skis and took herself off into the lift queue like a natural. We were all impressed by Gina’s amazing balance and happy to hear the squeals of joy during ‘carpet karaoke’. Glad we got to share in all your fun too!Stephanie and Hagan guided Steven L. for an awesome weekend of riding - all smiles! This crew had so much fun especially singing Sweet Home Alabama outside Maggie’s Snacks at the bottom of Towers Chair. It was amazing meeting you Steven!Dave guided Steven S. for his first snow experience. Steven tried to absorb all the information from his lesson and with adaptive equipment and his great attitude Steven and Dave had a very positive

Last weekend’s Members Camp was a hit - for everyone. Thanks Team. Pic - Courtesy DWA.

All Efforts Appreciated

As we have said many times in the museum, it takes a whole lot of people to make something fabulous

happen. We think something fabulous has occurred this winter. After only our second season since reopening, the museum has truly become a part of the Falls Creek landscape with more and more people visiting us, donating items to us and supporting us both financially and emotionally. For this we would like to say a big Thank You.Special thanks must go to all of our volunteers this season, Noelene, Leo, Michelle, Cathy and Margy, who have allowed us to be open six days a week throughout the entire season. Their commitment and enthusiasm is infectious.

We would like to recognise our many sponsors who have assisted us with our events. We held a wildly successful Fashion Show during opening weekend, which required a great deal of community support. We are already discussing how we top that one for next year. Watch this space! We also have some exciting Arts and Culture projects in the pipeline and due to the generous support of a few individuals in the village we will be undertaking these over the summer. Our membership drive has been well received and growing weekly. Please keep an eye out for our supporter stickers on the doors and windows of local businesses and lodges around the village. A huge thanks to those that have already signed up. Further details about our membership program can be found on our Facebook page or at our website www.fallscreekmuseum.com.au.

There were so many individuals that contributed to the Seven Decades of Alpine Life celebrations during the season. Photographers, volunteer models, sponsors, event attendees, lodges, RMB and Ski lifts, as well as special guests who travelled from far and wide for what was a special week in Falls Creek History. This Week in Falls Creek and Mount Beauty has been a committed supporter of the museum and its activities. We thank them for publishing the stories that we have wanted to tell throughout the season. We look forward to welcoming more guests to the village this summer and showcasing the Falls User Guide with our newly developed ‘Arts and Heritage Walk.’ For now, we highlight again that it takes a lot of individuals to make a village and Falls Creek is one awesome village. Thankyou everyone! - from the Historical Society committee. •

Fantastic September

As we go to print, with a base of around 1.8 meres (depending on where you measure), we should mention here the

wonderful range of holiday activity options that are available to make your visit to Falls Creek a very memorable one.On the back of your handy ‘less than’ pocket sized trail map is a list of the extra activities that will make your holiday much, much more than just skiing or boarding - no matter how good it is!Once you have decided to take advantage of one or more of the activities, you may make a booking by phoning the toll free number, 1800 204 424, or by speaking with any of the staff in either of the Falls Creek Sport shops - one in the QT complex at the base of Falls Express chairlift, and the other in the Village Bowl, beside the Eagle Chairlift.Snowmobile ToursOne lady came back from her snowmobile tour just raving about it. “It was fantastic! I did not believe there is so much to see and

enjoy out there on the high plains. It was the most amazing experience!”And, to make it even better, the Snowmobile Tour operators are now offering a 20% discount on the cost of all tours. You can either ride your own machine (you must have a valid, current drivers licence) or you can go out as the Pillion Passenger, on the back with a competent guide. •Back Country ToursWhen the snow gets deep, and the slopes are steep, that’s the time to call Steve Lee and take advantage of one of his ripper back country tours. As you will know, Steve represented Australia at the Olympics three times. He also competed in World Cup, winning the Super G in Japan.

FALLS FREESTYLE SERIESFALLS FREESTYLE SERIESgenerous contribution these events would not be able to run, and without freestyle here at Falls Creek… well… that would be not nearly as fun!The first event in the series this year was our beloved BLT - the Board Lounge Throwdown, a rail jam for the people. We saw the biggest grom participation we have ever had in our Freestyle Series and some strong presence from the ladies too, which was incredible to see. After the first BLT, we had the Wombat Rambler Night Race -GO TRAVIS! And Pat Auderer... (you angered ALL of the Austrian Race Coaches ;) - and then another BLT aimed at pushing the limits in line with the Nitro Good Times Weekend. July went off with only a small speed bump (having to reschedule the Rambler due to 170km winds… not ideal!) and we were extremely

First we were all panicking that the snow would never arrive and then BAM! Not only did the snow god’s grace us

Because of the insane snow levels we’ve had, and how much is still on the ground, we are pleased to announce that BOTH Terrain Parks will be sticking around to the bitter end of the season. OWW YESSSS!!!The Falls Freestyle series boasted over 500 competitors this season, with much more appealing weather for all the events then last year. Our groms really pushed the envelope in this showing us that we have a super strong young community coming up in Freestyle. We also had some competitors back on the hill we hadn’t seen in a while, that wowed us with their skills (Ryan Linnert and Nick Payne… WOW).In September we were graced with not spring but another huge dump of snow, on top of the Bandwagon Banked Slalom in Vertigo Valley (it’s been our dream to do it there for years!), the Dreamer slopestyle and then a final wrap up party for the season. The Bandwagon Banked Slalom was turned up a notch this year, giving competitors a hard time taming the beast. Nevertheless, the wild horse was wrangled and some crazy quick times were recorded. significant part of the Great Dividing Range and much of it classified as the Alpine National Park. As such, just outside our door is this large stretch of undulating terrain and lies roughly between Mt Hotham (1868m), and Mt Bogong (1896m) to the north. During winter, or even for 2017, during the spring, it is the largest snow covered area in Australia. Enjoying a rich history, the high plains are also home to many great historical huts such as Fitzgerald’s, Wallace’s, Cope, Tawonga Huts - the list does continue. 166 huts have been built on the Bogong High Plains, with about 50 still standing.VariationsThere are many ways to travel Cross Country and they differ depending on ability, desired speed, and where you want to go. Your trip will also depend on the weather.Crust SkiingA magical thing happens around September, it’s called crust. When the top layer of snow melts during the day and then freezes overnight, we are met with a nice hard layer of snow meaning the once helpless skinny skis, can now take us anywhere the heart desires. The best too, is when there is minimal wind so as to not create windblown ice patches. If this process of melt and freeze continues over days, heading out off the groomed trails on a pair of skates (just a bit faster than the classic option) on a hard yet stable surface is the best way to go really far across undulating terrain. Some ideal trips with skates and crust snow is doing the Spion Kopje loop, a long lap around the Rocky Valley Lake and coming through Pretty Valley, or even just exploring Heathy Spur area. It is also great for beginners as

Back the Back Country

This season we have had a lot of snow. Some say too much snow, if that’s possible, but to the point where

holidayers start to move on from winter, the peak from August has died and even the official season finishes (albeit extended). The fact is that after October 8, lifts won’t be lifting and groomers won’t be grooming, but we will still have banks of snow all over the Bogong High Plains! I wonder what they used to do before the ski industry built lifts in the 1950’s? They Cross Country skied - backcountry. This week I am going to give you the insider’s guide on how and where to go backcountry. What are we dealing with?In case you did not know, Falls Creek is located close to the centre of the Bogong High Plains. Dr Ruth Lawrence (in her thesis) defines the area bounded by Mt Bogong in the north, Glen Will in the East, the Victoria River in the south and Harrietville in the west - making up a

you can start easily heading out towards Langford’s Gap and around Watchbed creek. I have a friend who took his mum for the first time off track last weekend, and his mum is a good skier but not a wizard of any sorts, sorry Michele.Crust Skiing in the afternoonI want to put this section in because it adds flavour. The crust, as anyone who is an avid meteorologist would know, starts to soften up by midday and what once was a nice firm sideways push off with a skate ski turns into a disastrous dig in, maybe even followed by a frontwards topple. But if the day is gorgeous and you still want to shake your thing, heading out along the plateau on classics could be a good idea. The straight movement means a little dig in has no effect, plus, you will be able to climb hills faster and less strenuously. In my opinion descend the slushy slopes much more lusciously with

telemark turns as the ski are slightly longer and better flexed on the ends and the boots are softer allowing more feel. Make sure also to just use some pattern classics as you can be bothered waxing in +6 degrees?Backcountry TourIf you go to the house of a self-acclaimed mountain expert, you would hope they have these three items; Touring bindings, skins, and a goggle tan (however through repeated ‘slow tanning’ sessions where sunscreen is a major player). I have a friend Finlay Clarke, he has all this equipment and might one day be a mountain expert if he gets his act together. He has done numerous trips so far this winter, heading out to Ropers Lookout (a quick and easy one), Mount McKay, and Rocky Knolls (beyond Ruined Castle) to name a few. He will say you can head out in all conditions with soft powder days a favourite as well as slightly softened crusty sessions. The trick though with this backcountry gear, is to choose journeys centred around a ‘gnarly’ or ‘sick’ downhill descent as opposed to a long undulating marathon. The skins allow you to hike up steep slopes and once you take them off and are staring down a shaft or cornice, you want to be both licking your lips and excited knowing you have some proper downhill skis underfoot. One for the thrill seekers, from McKay, you can see a Europeanesque shaped mountain called Mount Feathertop, as the legend goes, if you can ski down that cornice, you

between accurate representation and subjective interpretation.”There is also a back story to Leighton as the painter of our tail map artwork. Leighton visited Falls Creek on a skiing trip with his school as a teenager. And at that stage he was thoroughly interested in art. Doing the right thing as a new-comer to the resort has made sure he had a trail map with him. He was even more pleased to see that the background art was from a painting - which really impressed him. Little did he know at that stage that his love of landscape art would bring him back to Falls Creek to produce a fantastic painting that now forms the background to future Trail Maps. The painting was unveiled last Friday at an informal ‘showing’ in the Falls Creek Boardroom where the original art will hang ‘in perpetuity’. The painting actually sits extremely well with the surrounds of the Board Room as it is complemented by a fabulous photo of the resort by Charlie Brown. •And Local PhotographyArtist and Photographer David Rosendale is a recent recipient of the Falls Creek Artist-In-Residence program, who, with the assistance of Falls Creek Resort Management, has been documenting seasonal change in our Alpine

landscape from an aerial perspective. This picture would then be used as the basis for many future trail maps - and the accurate depiction would make it easier for guests to identify with the area and its unique features.Leighton Edwards is the artist. According to his bio “Living in Torquay provides inspiration from the beautiful natural environment for landscape painting.I have always been drawing and painting. Landscapes and seascapes became an irresistable challenge after learning more about composition, perspective, colour and technique. I have explored working in many artists’ mediums and now use oil paint on canvas most often.Nature has always been a dominant source of inspiration and subject matter. A fascination with waters’ aesthetics features in many paintings. I am drawn to dramatic surf beaches and snow covered mountains as a destination for recreational activities in natural wilderness environments. I travelled to Europe for two months in 1995, just after finishing High School, to visit many art galleries and museums. I then studied a Bachelor of Visual Art at the University of South Australia in Adelaide, and completed this in 1999. Subjects focused on were Photography, Sculpture and Life Painting. A comprehensive understanding of Colour Theory and Perspective was attained and this has provided a solid foundation for creating technically accurate paintings. I was also able to explore a wide range of other artistic disciplines during this time.My painting is informed by photography and filtered by my personal perceptions of the location. environment, studying the co-existence of the resort in the broader landscape, and the cycle and transition across seasons.David is a sought-after exhibiting and commercial photographer based in Melbourne whose work has been presented in several prestigious national photographic prizes, most recently as a finalist in the National Photographic Portrait prize.Documenting Falls Creek for several years, David has a strong and abiding interest in Falls Creek, and would sometimes spend weeks on location to attain that ‘one’ shot. David’s work can only be described as meticulous and considered with each one of his works speaking deeply and profoundly of the beauty of Falls Creek’s both natural and man-made environment.David’s Falls Creek residency has produced a body of work that raises awareness of a stunning natural resource that needs to be protected, and champions the notion that human presence and coexistence, is achievable with respect.David has kindly donated two works to Falls Creek, one to remain in the Falls Creek collection and the other to be auctioned at the Pretty Valley Spring Ball, this coming Saturday 23rd September. - largely due to a fantastic season of snow.Picture a snow-capped mountain top - the highest point in the hemisphere you can get on four wheels. 23km away, picture a pub on the shores of a beautiful alpine lake. In between you have a ski resort, Alpine National Park and some of the country’s best single-track.Now picture bombing this with 250 other pinners all taking off in a mass start for a 1209m total descent - that’s the Chaos part.2015 was an epic start for a big idea - to see what happens when we mix mountain biking and snow. It worked. 2016 was bigger and badder than before, but it reminded us that life isn’t always sunshine and lollipops (it’s sometimes cold & a white-out). In 2017 McKayos is back with a vengeance in Australia’s only Snow - Dirt - Road bash.We brought in single-track last year and the riders loved it, so we’re going to add a bit more. Once the snow descent is over Summit Home Trail, Discharge and Packhorse will take you through almost 7km of our MTB trails. We would love to throw Flowtown in there but we’re going to look after everyone’s favourite ride so that its cherry ripe come November. For the rest we’ve kept the mountain, we’ve kept the river crossing and we’ve kept the scenery. Cricket Training

Cricket Training with Mount Beauty United Cricket Club - Thursday 28th September.

Never mind all that white stuff on the hill - it is time to put those skis away, grab your bat and ball, and get ready for the magnificent summer ahead. Outdoor cricket training at Mount Beauty United Cricket Club is starting up again this coming week on Thursday 28th September from 4:30pm at the main cricket ground nets. Head coach Ashan Ranaweera will have the bowling machine out as well as a couple of nets running for bowling and batting practice, and Dan Saville may run a fielding drill or two as well. We will also have a training session in Mount Beauty Stadium from 7pm to 8pm ($2 entry) on Monday 25th September, involving some ball game, fitness, fielding and skills activities.New members are always welcome as we are a friendly social club and getting involved in local sport is a great way to meet people if you have just moved to town. Feel free to contact club president Kevin Vale at 0439 620 990 for any questions. We look forward to seeing you next week! Cheers, Anthony Brewergray, club secretary. •

Pruning Our Mop TopsAlpine Shire Council’s tree crew has just finished pruning the Mop Top Robinias in the Mount Beauty town centre. These works took place during the mornings between September 18-22, starting early each morning while there are few people around. The Mop Tops will be pruned back close to the main trunk as part of our ongoing maintenance program, which will ensure they maintain an aesthetic shape while also addressing some of the maintenance issues as a result of the trees and foliage impacting the surrounding infrastructure. It has been a while since the Mop Tops have had a major prune and the bare branches may seem startling to the eye at first. However, this plant species responds particularly well to an aggressive prune, with fresh regrowth appearing throughout Spring and Summer. The Shire apologises in advance for any inconvenience caused while the pruning is being carried out safely. If you have any enquiries regarding these works, please contact Michael Buckley at [email protected] or phone 03 5755 0555.There is also some vital and relevant information on the greenplatypusgardens.
