Dear Readers,

This issue of e.n.o. magazine is packed with information about recent company deve-lopments. The emphasis lies on new wind turbines we'll be showcasing at the Husum trade fair this coming September. But we will also discuss the group’s positive growth trends and introduce the new station in Leipzig.

As EEG bonus cutbacks loom for the solar power industry and grid expansion for off-shore farms has remained sluggish, there has been increased demand for onshore wind energy. e.n.o. energy is well prepared for the situation with expert services cove-ring the entire economic chain: turbine manufacture, wind farm operation, maintenance and quality control. As an operator and service provider our company covers the entire value chain.

Over the next few years, e.n.o. energy plans to expand in Germany and abroad. While maintaining its long-term commitment to developing a new generation of wind turbines and enlarging its research department, e.n.o. will also seek to offer new services in finan cing, wind farms and traditional corporate communication.

Sound interesting? Then wait until you read this edition of e.n.o. magazine. Join us as we pave the way for the future of onshore wind energy!

How can wind power plants be made even better? e.n.o. energy has con-ducted extensive studies examining the essential requirements for wind turbines in the three-megawatt segment. These studies looked at all relevant aspects of wind energy use with multi megawatt machines. With space becoming more scarce , e.n.o. energy examined basic planning requirements with respect to sustainable wind energy utilization for market environments outside the EEG. The studies addressed questions about service, serviceability, efficiency and long-term component reliability. Lastly,

e.n.o. energy analyzed national and inter-national requirements for grid connec-tions with regard to future demand.

In all these investigations, e.n.o. energy had access to an excellent external net-work of advisers, insurance companies and suppliers. But its principle source came from within its own house – from the many years of know how in areas of wind energy utilization. The company’s specialist departments took part in the conceptual design. Engineers from e.n.o. energy systems GmbH contributed all the necessary information on wind farm

planning, financing, management, pro-duction, service and remote data moni-toring. From it they designed a concep-tual study for the future generation of machines. This study was then tailored to current and future market demands by the sales staff. The result was the idea for the e.n.o. 114 – a platform base with a 114 m rotor diameter and a 3.5 MW no-minal rating. In the last step, developers entered the device’s complex require-ments into the system specifications.

Nearly every business sectors requires a platform strategy. But no single turbine

Wind turbines Wind turbines

can meet the requirements – regional planning, nature conservation, economic efficiency – of every conceivable loca-tion. That’s why e.n.o. energy developed the e.n.o. platform, with the flexible e.n.o. 114 as its base.

The e.n.o. 114 is rated at approximately 340 W/m² – equivalent to a classic de-sign in accordance with IEC II – and can be used in wind speeds averaging up to of 8.5 m/s. The e.n.o. 114 was also built to the standards of the German Institute for Civil Engineering's DIBt WZ III, so it can be used for windier regions of Ger-many, sustaining average wind speeds just shy of 8.8 m/s at a hub height of 142 metres. During operation, the targeted sound level of the e.n.o. 114 should not exceed 105 dBA.

For the time being, three different e.n.o. 114 tower variations have been developed so that a wide range of different location requirements can be covered. As a re sult, the e.n.o. 114 can serve hub heights of around 9 m, 122 m and 142 m, equivalent to a total height of approximately 150 m, 180 m and 200 m, respectively.

The increasing scarcity of suitable areas for wind energy use has been taken into account in the overall design, with a spe-cial design for increased turbulence resi-stance. In particular, the rotors, support structure and drive train have been opti-mized for increased resistance to alter-nating loads. Consequently, the e.n.o. 114 is particularly suitable for demanding sites with a high packing density and high ambient turbulence.

This is made possible by the rotor blade's special aerodynamics from the e.n.o. blade® family combined with the robust e.n.o. live.train® concept, a com bination of fourpoint support of the rotor with a restraintfree gearbox mount and gearrelieving torque control. In con trast to the most common type of three point support, the gearbox eliminates the tor-que caused by rotor load and supporting forces. These have a negative impact on the service life of the gearbox, especially given turbulence caused by wind farms and large rotor diameters. Thanks to the

restraintfree hydraulic sup port of the gearbox, the gearbox input remains free of hazardous torque even in extreme situations. As a result, the machine endures higher ambient turbulence with increased mechanical reliability, al lowing a significantly higher density of wind farm placement options with better-than-ave-rage efficiency.

The e.n.o. 114 brings a tried and tested combination of a slip ring free, electrically excited synchronous generator and full power converter technology for grid con-nections. The generous and uncompro-mising settings of the electrical system permit a cosφ of at least 0.9, even at 10 % undervoltage or overvoltage. When combined with the standard e.n.o. iq control®, the e.n.o. systems makes addi-tional compensation systems in the wind park superfluous. This is due to the wind farm controller, the e.n.o. gridmaster®, which can intelligently regulate the reac-tive power required at the grid connec-tion point without being tied to perfor-mance, even when winds are completely calm. Coupled with the excellent error compensation mechanisms of the grid (low voltage ride through, high voltage ride through, grid support at high or low voltage drop), the engine is well prepared for current and future grid connection requirements, such as Germany’s sy-stem services regulations for wind tur-bines (SDLWindV).

Modern variations of the highly reliable e.n.o. 82 and e.n.o. 92 were adopted and expanded. The focus of the basic design philosophy lies in reducing essen-tials down to a minimum, since what isn't there can’t break. Minimalism for all things superfluous and redundancy for all things indispensable maximizes relia-bility. For example, the complex and fault prone water cooling of components in the nacelle was eliminated. Now the generator and gearbox are cooled sepa-rately using the air inside the nacelle – a robust technique that resists corrosion. The active cooling components for both generator and gearbox have built in re-dundancy: even if an oil pump or genera-tor fan fails, the engine can still operate at 50 % capacity or more.

The proven inverter system for grid con-nection is back in use in this machine. It fully decouples the six individual power converter lines from each other, thereby allowing the engine to continue operating even should a power converter fail. The inverters are highly reliable and offset potential downtimes caused by inverter failures.

The control system is based on e.n.o. energy’s tested control technology, but expanded using the novel e.n.o. ops control®. The new control mechanisms optimize yield in the partial load range, reducing component loads in the full load range for ideal grid support. The technology also uses advanced commu-nication routines for monitoring machine-ry and wind farms that facilitate a con-nection to existing SCADA systems and transmit live data for direct sales pur-poses.

The next generation of e.n.o. gridmaster® was created as an overarching control unit for regulating the entire wind farm. In addition to novel active and reactive power control (e.n.o. iq control®), it also contains an advanced interface to net-work operators and SCADA databases, meeting SDLWindV requirements as well as technical connection requirements from energy suppliers. The e.n.o. grid-master® technology can also be used with third party machines, regardless of manufacturer or production unit.

In the course of recent developments, e.n.o. energy was not only able to create a new wind turbine; it also engineered new systems for the future and submit-ted the designs for patent.

e.n.o. energy's engineering team has successfully risen to all the challenges from designing a technically advanced wind turbine in the three megawatt seg-ment. The company’s innovation produ-ced a series of patented new develop-ments epitomized by the e.n.o. 114. At this point, all the structural and major components have been completed, and assembly of the first machine is eagerly awaited. The design’s simple and reliable assembly will soon be put to the test. e.n.o. 114

It is inconceivable nowadays to think of power supply without a share of rene wable energy. And this share will continue to grow. In 2011, it already constituted about 20 % of Germany's gross power generation, almost half of this provided by wind turbines.

At the same time, however, there are many obstacles to overcome. One of these is the high regional load levels of power grids. The increased regulatory measures in grid security management and the increased frequency of reduc-tions for feed-in power make grid connec tion a significant factor when planning a wind farm.

The aim of grid connection planning is to create optimally designed equipment (e.g. cables, transformers) and determine the best grid connection point for energy feed-in.

Particularly crucial factors in this process are the location of the proposed wind farm, the number of plants proposed, the types of plants desired, the plant’s performance and the plant’s reactive power capability.

An initial assessment of the local grid situation can be made based on site location and the proposed feed in power of the wind farm. Together these allow the appropriate voltage level to be

The Grid ConnectionFrom planning to supply

There are a number of criteria for deter-mining the best grid connection point, including grid connection costs, opera-ting, voltage changes in the grid, static reactive power capacity and circuit feed-back such as second harmonics and interharmonics. The e.n.o. wind turbine design takes connection point require-ments into consideration so that all e.n.o. wind turbines have a high reactive power control range, even at undervol-tage or overvoltage. As a result, projects with e.n.o. turbines rarely need space-consu ming and costly compensation systems.

When determining grid connection points, e.n.o. energy considers needed grid expansion, distribution of feed in power to different grid connection points (so called grid connection splitting) and opportunities for cooperation with other operating organizations.

e.n.o. energy then coordinates this infor-mation with the utility company that aut-horizes the grid connection point. This also contains details on executing the grid connection. If approval has already been issued in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act (Bundes-Immisionsschutzgesetz = BlmSchG), then the feed in capacity at the grid connection point will be reserved.

Once the final grid connection point has been established, we begin a detailed design of the internal project. This inclu-des creating electrical single line dia-grams, calculating electrical losses, final design of operating resources, plans for customer transfer stations or substations and complying with the requirements of Germany’s SDL WindV (system services regulations for wind energy turbines). A key component in complying with the SDLWindV requirements is e.n.o. grid-master®, the farm management system

Grid Grid

determined . e.n.o. obtains grid voltage levels from grid data disclosed by utility companies.

Once grid data is available, the grid calcu lation software DIgSILENT Power-Factory creates a grid model (see grid example of a wind farm).

Using this diagram and the criteria for grid connection stipulated by the guidelines of the German Federal Association of Energy and Water Management (BDEW) for medium vol-tage (Transmis sion Code 2007), we can determine a technically and eco no-mi cally advantageous grid connection point for the wind farm.

Wind farm Rüting – e.n.o. energy

developed by e.n.o. This regulates the behaviour of e.n.o. wind farms and mixed farms following specifications provided by the respective utility company in accordance with SDLWindV.

As part of the review process for SDL-WindV requirements, we supervise turbine certification while an accredited certification body assesses the electrical behaviour of the wind farm at the grid connection point and issue certificates of conformity to those that pass.

e.n.o. energy has expertise in the field of grid connection design and its own spe-cially developed technology such as the e.n.o. gridmaster®. This know how allows e.n.o. energy to create the optimal grid connection point after BlmSch approval, while its systematic design assists in mee-ting grid connection requirements. e.n.o. energy thus supervises the project right up to the feed in of the generated power.

Spedition Balmer e.n.o. energy site

Balmer Spezialtransporte is an important partner of e.n.o. energy systems in the transport and installation of wind tur-bines. Its work starts with an inspection of the planned site and a preliminary analysis. Logistics specialists then check access to the site in advance and work with experts from the transport, crane installation and fitting teams to determine what’s needed. This ensures the best possible comprehensive solutions,

whether for single turbines or for entire wind farms.

Years of experience in transport, crane supply and installation services are be-hind the Holthusen-based company's success. Its committed installation engi-neers, well-trained drivers and latest technology benefit all its clients, including e.n.o. energy systems. Close coopera-tion at every step along the way ensures

a smooth and efficient process from planning to organization to installation. Each project poses a new challenge – which the Balmer team rises to meet.

“We take quality extremely seriously”, says managing director Eckart Balmer. “That is why we have had many of our processes certified; we have, for examp-le, passed the DIN ISO 9001 quality ma-nagement review and hold an SCC secu-

Clients are kept up-to-date with progress in all areas of construction, ensuring that rapid decisions are possible where needed. This saves money as well as time.

Thorough preparation is essential if a project is to run smoothly. Balmer as-sesses the entire route – from turbine component production to installation – so that the necessary traffic manage-ment measures can be coordinated and the delivery and installation sequence defined in advance. Logistics experts also provide monitoring and support for work on access roads and crane installa-tion sites.

Several features need to be taken into account to ensure that the transport ve-hicles carrying heavy loads are not ham-pered from arriving and departing. Next to vehicle length, the weather conditions and site features are primary concerns. Furthermore, the vehicles must be able to carry the axle and wheel load and the crane area needs to be suitable for the bearing load.

A detailed needs assessment for the construction site is no les important. This includes material, crew, sanitary containers, construction vehicles and review of the necessary auxiliary means for assembly. Before assembly start, all relevant approvals for the turbine com-ponents and the crane must be ob-tained. The site coordinator is on site

from the start, organising the positioning of the assembly crane and leading as-sembly preparations.

Delivery of individual components follows the order of their assembly. Direct and personal contact with the e.n.o. energy site management means that small pro-blems can be discussed and corrected quickly without disrupting the schedule. This ensures that each individual turbine and cabling set can be completed on time.

After work is over, the construction site is cleared and cleaned. Through measures like these, Balmer Spedition and LKW-Service GmbH give customers quality service – from start to finish.

WIND-certification GmbH

WIND certification GmbH is an accre-dited certification body meeting EN 45011 standards. It certifies electrical properties of generating units (wind turbines, PV inverters), generating in-stallations (wind farms, solar parks etc.) and components (controllers etc.). The WIND certification GmbH covers the entire field of certification activities for grid connection of generating instal-lations and units. The WIND certification GmbH is a spin off of WIND consult GmbH (accredited testing and calibra-tion laboratory) providing independent certification services.

The experts from WIND certification GmbH draw on years of experience in grid compatibility measurements, elec-trical property evaluation and network simulations of wind turbines and wind farms.

In a variety of working groups such as the technical committee for electrical properties, WIND certification experts are drafting the TR3, TR4 and TR8 technical guidelines. These are used to lay down procedures for prototype measurement and certification of units (e.g. wind turbines) and installations (e.g. wind farms). WIND certification GmbH actively participates in the expert panel for system services deve-lopment (SDLWindV) and are thus directly involved in the creation of the 2009 System Services Ordinance.

The experts at WIND-certification are currently editing drafts on the TR3, TR4 and TR8 of the FGW, the IEC 61400 27 and the ENTSO E network code. The comprehensive work on these guide-lines guarantees clients a high level of expertise. WIND certification GmbH is recommended as an approved certi-fication body by the Network Technolo-gy and Operation Forum (Forum Netz-technik/Netzbetrieb = FNN) and the

German Federal Association of Energy and Water Management (Bundesver-band der Energie und Wasserwirt-schaft = BDEW). The list of recommen-ded certifiers is published by the Fede-ration of German Windpower and other Renewable Energies (FGW).

So far, the company has issued over 70 installation certificates and expert reports for a total of more than 650 MW of installed capacity and 310 ge-nerating units. Three procedures are currently in place for unit certification at WIND certification GmbH. These inclu-de the newly developed e.n.o. 82 and e.n.o. 92 type wind energy systems from e.n.o. energy systems GmbH.

The German Renewable Energy Sources Act 2012 (EEG) and the cur-rent grid connection guidelines stipu-late submission of unit and installation certificates for generating installations > 1 MVA as a prerequisite for grid con-nection. Hence, installation certificates for newly planned wind turbines must be submitted to the utility company prior to final grid connection approval. Operators should consider the deadlines set by the utility company, e planners and certification bodies. After the start up of the wind farm, proof of conformity must be submitted to the local utility company. This ensures that planning documents in the installation certificates have been implemented. Installations that began operation bet-ween 01.01.2002 and 31.12.2008 and that possess an installation certificate are also entitled to the SDL bonus pro-vided for by EEG 2012.

The WIND certification GmbH guaran-tees its customers a processing time of no more than four weeks after all docu-ments have been submitted.

Three wind turbines for the TOBI group

The move towards renewable energy has increased competition on Germany’s energy production market. The TOBI group is a union of commu-nally minded energy-supply companies based mainly in North Rhine – West-phalia and Lower Saxony. The common goal of the group is to share in power production capacity and to operate independently. In this way, the group wishes to reduce the virtual oligopoly held by the four key players on the market.

In order to continue growing in the wind energy market, the TOBI Windenergie GmbH & Co. KG group has been relying on e.n.o. energy for the past year as a wind turbine supplier. The Mecklenburg based company has been able to achieve market penetration in the face of a variety of competitors thanks to its technology. It collaborates with the project planners Jesaitis & Graba Windkraft OHG from Eckernför-de, the e.n.o. energy group as a techni-cal supplier and TOBI Wind as part of

Each of the tur-bines has an electrical rating of 2.05 MW, with annual energy produc-tion around 1.7 million kWh. This equals the annual electricity consumption of some 3,100 households.

“We plan to open up further locations in 2012, including some in the Bocholt area”, says Managing Director Werner Vogel. The aim of the local municipal group is to operate wind turbines with an electrical rating of 60 70 MW and an energy production of 150 million kWh/year. The managing director explains, “We are actively pursuing the path of alternative energy for the utility services involved. TOBI Windenergie bought existing turbines with an output of 20 MW in North Rhine – Westphalia, Rhineland Palatinate and Schleswig Holstein in 2009. Currently, the electri-city production of these turbines is at around 40 million kWh. The coopera-tion agreements and contracts were able to be quickly and effortlessly fina-lized, to the satisfaction of all parties involved.”

The TOBI group has estimated that total output requirements for regene-rative wind power to be 66.6 MW. Current output is 26.15 MW. This out-put is supervised by the 8 municipal utility companies that make up TOBI Wind energie.

The profitability of wind farms is ano-ther focus of research for e.n.o. energy sys tems. The development of e.n.o. 114 has been accompanied by a paradigm shift: classic plant designs seeking to maximize the yield of individual turbines are now out of date. The new trend is optimising the profitability of wind farms with low wind resources. The pionee-ring design philosophy ofe.n.o. 114 is to give greater consideration to the inter-action between turbines in the run up and follow up. Behind it lies a patent-pending principle: designing turbines for high turbulence while reducing follow up turbulence. This minimizes the distance between individual turbines and, in so doing, increases area effici-ency and the number of turbines per unit area.

The e.n.o. 114 is optimized for reduced loads through profile geometries for new rotor blades and a customized rotor speed developed in complex wind tunnel trials. It is characterited by low resistance coefficients over a wide positioning range, drastically reducing rotor thrust and wake turbulence. Development of rotor blade profiles and the calculation of structural load was conducted in close cooperation with an engineering firm and a university experienced in these areas.

Through this work, e.n.o. is setting new standards for yield and efficiency, espe-cially under turbulent conditions in exi-sting wind farms or in forest areas – ex-actly what our customers have asked us for.

Innovative concepts for higher profitability

Within the e.n.o. energy group, growth in development and research has led to the formation of its own team. Created in March of this year, the e.n.o. energy research team studies technological developments for future plants, use of new materials, in house production questions, patent searches and other issues. The team is led by Dr. Martin Hörenz, who relocated from the aerospace engineering sector at the Technical University of Dresden.

The aim of the research team is to identify and safeguard USPs. In order to do this, the team examines innovative concepts and principles for their appli-cability in future plants, prepares patent applications and supervises current patent applications.

But the main focus of e.n.o. energy's research and development work lies in cooperation with well-known compa-nies and universities. e.n.o. energy uses a principle from companies in the automotive industry that have transfor-med their research and development departments into more efficient teams, enabling focus on core abilities and better utilization of complex supply industry know how. Networking new developments, e.n.o. energy can put a small team into action that is both small (compared with other plant manufac-turers) and effective.

The pitch system developed with Bosch Rexroth AG for the e.n.o. 82 and e.n.o. 92 turbines are an example of this kind of successful cooperation. A further joint project was conducted on the applica-bility of the control system developed by Rexroth known as Active Torque Con-trol, which reduces drive train loads. For existing turbines, the in house solution is now preferred, and exhibits excellent performance. More collaborations are in the pipeline, including projects with re-search institutions and universities.

Financing

Is space still needed for new manu-facturers alongside the established global players in the wind industry? If yes, how much space is needed and who will offer it? Competition is good for business, after all. New businesses bring new approaches, implement new ideas and help creative industries evolve .

Over the past few years, the e.n.o. energy group has significantly expan-ded the base of wind farm developers and builders. In doing so, it’s taken the courageous step of paving the way for wind turbine manufacturers.

The Investkredit Bank AG is head-quartered in Vienna and has been part of the Austrian Volksbanken group since 2006. A specialist in long term financing, its focus for at least the past ten years has been on financing pro-jects in the field of renewable energy, principally in the wind energy industry. During this time it got to know e.n.o. energy as a project developer. Having since evolved in their market segments, the companies have now paired up again.

Investkredit was largely instrumental in co financing the development of the Austrian wind energy era and has become active in the Euro pean lead market in the wake of EEG. It was willing take these risks because it could rely on the expertise of skilled technicians from a special department in the bank, created when long term maintenance contracts had yet to re-present the market standard. Building on the technical instruments of our specialists and on a sophisticated wind database, Investkre dit has been able to accumulate know how over time that, while not making wind assessments obsolete, provides them a sense for which sites and projects are good and which are less so.

The contact between Investkredit and e.n.o. is to be increased in the area of project financing. Turbine types e.n.o. 82 and e.n.o. 92 were built and tested in various wind farms and the company also has a production facility and project pipeline that it can expand.

In the post Lehmann era, financing new projects requires more than reasonable debt equity ratio and professional wind assessment. The “bankability” of the new e.n.o. wind farm was established with data searches and plausibility checks, in discussions and impressions on the company headquarters in Ro-stock, in teleconference calls on tech-nical issues and finances and in talks with the maintenance crew on a wind turbine tower. The discussion also showed how dedicated the e.n.o. team was, committed to producing some-thing good, reliable and lasting, based on sound corporate figures and a care-ful approach. The youngest generation of turbines with synchronous generator and full power converter, which meet the more stringent grid requirements of SDL-WindV/2011 and includes the e.n.o. 114, point in this direction.

Although the lack of a generating unit (EZE = Erzeugungseinheit) in the finan-cing of wind turbines presents an atypical yet significant risk, bankability is still very likely given confidence in the group’s performance capability, exper-tise and flexibility.

Despite recent EEG changes (or maybe because of them), e.n.o. energy is awa-re of current opportunities in the Ger-man wind power market and has made continued business growth its goal. We are convinced that previous expe-riences will help the company continue to find the proper balance between expansion and stability. We are happy to be the bank “on board” as we review and pursue these opportunities.

Update on e.n.o. TechnologyFor four years now, e.n.o. energy wind turbines have been proving how reliable and serviceable they are. Since plant start up, the first e.n.o. 82 prototypes have already generated more than 21 GWh.

As of last summer, our 92.8-m turbine has been in service for two years, with 11,500 hours of on-line operation. And at the beginning of the year, a renowned expert from the wind industry confirmed the insurability of the e.n.o. 92. Now comprehensive insurance protection is available for future operators of e.n.o. turbines with affordable premiums.

Measurement of the load curve was con-ducted for the e.n.o. 82 and e.n.o. 92 at the Kirch Mulsow site using the synchro-nous generator and full power converter. The results were even better than the

calculated values. Depending on the quality of the location, yield increases of more than 3 % for the e.n.o. 82 and of more than 0.4 % for the e.n.o. 92 can be expected.

In addition, tests have been successfully completed for the e.n.o. 92 with a hub height of 123 metres with respect to load acceptances, machinery components, rotor blades, safety system and electrical systems. An application for type approval of the tower has also been submitted, and approval is expected soon.

In the undervoltage field tests, the e.n.o. 82 and e.n.o. 92 have demonstrated the outstanding, grid-supporting properties of the e.n.o. full power converter. This is the most important step for grid certifica-tion in accordance with international standards and with the Germany-based

SDL WindV. After documentation of the results and validation of existing models, the certifications will be completed for the e.n.o. 82 and e.n.o. 92 by the end of the year.

e.n.o. energy Supports Innovative Concept for Trade Fair Following long discussions about the concept and location for Wind, a leading trade fair for wind power, e.n.o. energy began to rethink its own trade fair planning for 2014. A member of the Association of German Enginee-ring Federation (Verband Deutscher Maschinen und Anlagenbau = VDMA), the group plans on taking part in the Hamburg 2014 fair. e.n.o. sees itself as a future exhibitor for Hannover and Hamburg and is looking forward to the new challenges and experience.

The company will continue to stay on the path of growth as it evolves. Accor-ding to the Rerik-based company, the leading trade fair and its international reputation can only benefit from a new location in Hamburg, particularly when

it comes to internationality, profes-sionalism and reliability. In the future, e.n.o. energy will also be a guest at the Husum trade fair due to its family tradition and current significance and can very much imagine taking part in collaborations with other companies.

e.n.o. energy is looking forward to presenting new technology in the outside stand area at this year's Husum trade fair.
