Maitland Lutheran School Enriching Education - Embracing Community Term 3 Week 5, 2018 I am not a great swimmer. When I was at Teachers College I trained for 6 months to be able to swim 800m so I could compete in a ‘mini-triathlon’ in West Lakes. The swim leg was first and I made the 800m - just! I was second last out of the water and I think the guy behind me was about 95 years old! I am no expert when it comes to swimming but I do understand some of the concepts involved. One is understanding the principle of how we float, (Incidentally when in Greece I found I could float much easier than when at the beach here in Australia. I put it down to the extra saltiness of the water - my son Brayden however seemed to think it may have been related to the beer in Germany I loved so much.) Anyway the correct position in the water assist the swimmer to stay on top - it does not however help them to move forward. A good swimmer is able to find this key position and simultaneously use their arms and legs for maximum propulsion. Timing and precision of stroke are very important. In essence a good swimmer needs to combine the art of relaxing in harmony with the water to float with the discipline of a powerful stroke that does not interfere with this position. God’s love is a bit like water. It is the medium in which we desire to live and move. This love upholds us like water does the swimmer and if we get our position correct it will support us so that we “float” in His love. God has a purpose and plans for each of us and His desire is to see us reach our potential. We need to do our part in the scheme so that we move forward and don’t just float around. We need the discipline of the “strokes” of the Christian live - Loving God and Loving our neighbour. It is these actions that propel us forward in life. A swimmer needs to relax while moving in a purposeful way. We as Christians need to rest in God’s love while moving in a disciplined and purposeful way forward by loving God and our neighbour. Sounds so simple. “For the whole law is fulfilled in one sentence: You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” Galatians 5:14 A Swimming Lesson

Term 3 Week 5, 2018

I am not a great swimmer.

I would like to encourage our parent community to strongly consider attending Monday nights “Project Rockit” Parent Support Forum. Many of us are faced with the issue of children who are potentially more tech savvy than they are themselves (certainly the case in my household). As well as the many positives of interaction with technology there are many dangers which are not always completely understood by older generations. Monday night is aimed at providing creditable tips on how to support your child online and how to deal with problems if they arise.

There is significant time available to ask questions for those of us who are uncertain about how best to support our child in the context of our own family. This is a unique opportunity and it is my belief that all families will face issues in this area at some point in time. The forum has been opened up to all local schools so feel free to bring along friends who are also interested in learning how best to manage their child’s journey with technology.

We have 2 sporting teams that have made State finals and who will be competing in the coming weeks of this term. The Yr 8/9 girls netball team will compete at Priceline Stadium on Monday and the Yr 6/7 boys football team compete at Thebarton oval on 26th of September. Best wishes to all involved.

Our school will be holding OPEN DAY on Thursday 6th September from 9:15am to 11am, followed by morning tea. All classrooms are open for visitors, parents, grandparents and anyone interested in seeing our school in action. Please share the date with anyone you think might like to come along and walk through. Our School Captains will be running tours on the ‘Captains Trail’ for those who are interested which includes an activity trail for any pre-schoolers you have with you. See our choir and bands, and displays also in our Tech Shed, Home Ec and Science rooms.

Last week we welcomed lots of little treasures to the Nest. Children were busy looking for treasure, making treasure boxes, testing their skills with different locks and being creative with play dough. It was a great morning and we look forward to having some more fun in week 8.
