JARC’s mission is to enrich the lives of people with disabilities through gentle and loving support, valued relationships, and engagement with the community, in accordance with Jewish values.

JARC Goes “Out and About”Summer would not be complete without the annual Tiger game outing hosted by the Temple Israel Men’s Club. On August 18th, 130 people served by JARC and staff hung out in Kaline’s Corner and cheered as the Tigers won an exciting game. Special thanks to Jim Grey who went “above and beyond,” as always, to make the event so terrific.

It was smooth sailing on a warm, sunny September 10th evening when 150 people from JARC took a cruise along the Detroit River aboard the Diamond Jack. Special thanks to the entire Elkus Family and the Irene Elkus Good Times Fund for making it a fun and fabulous event that included Motown music, dancing and refreshments.

On September 28, JARC proudly joined with Deaf C.A.N.! by participating in Deaf Celebration Day 2013 held at Northland Center Mall in Southfield. The all-day event featured live entertainment, children’s arts and crafts, as well as give-a-ways and raffles. More than 50 exhibitors showcased products and services for the Deaf community.

JARC provides culturally and linguistically accessible services to adults who are Deaf and have a disability. Currently there are 12 individuals living independently in their own apartments, condos or homes who are part of JARC’s Deaf program. All staff who work with those who are Deaf are skilled in American Sign Language (ASL); many are themselves Deaf.

For more information about JARC’s services for the Deaf, contact Randee Black at [email protected].

Groovin’ and Movin’ at the FOXOn November 14, 2013 JARC presented a phenomenal light-dazzling show featuring The Rascals: Once Upon A Dream for its 33rd annual fall fundraising event. Nearly 3,000 animated guests and supporters rocked the Fox Theatre with a 60’s vibe.

Prior to the main event, CEO Rick Loewenstein spoke about the how the dreams of JARC continue to unfold, growing each day and will expand into the future. This was followed by a uplifting video “The Culture of Gentleness,” written, produced and underwritten by Fran Victor and Bill Harder. (The video can be viewed on JARC’s website, www.jarc.org).

Chairing this year’s event were David Haron, Janis Shulman and Scott Werner. Sharon Eisenshtadt assisted as Fundriaser Advisor. Quicken Loans, Title Source, Inc., Gilbert Films and Bienenstock Nationwide Court Reporting and Video served as Corporate Presenting Sponsors.

Michelle and David Carroll provided a boost to the event’s fundraising efforts through their generous matching gift challenge.

“The Rascals lit up the stage for JARC, and filled the Fox Theatre with music. They emphasized the importance of positive change, of bringing people together, and of hope and inclusion. Their belief in equality for all people was expressed in their music—’People everywhere just got to be free—what a lovely, lovely world this would be if everyone learned to live together’. What a fitting message for JARC, whose mission focuses on enriching lives through gentle and loving support, positive relationships, and living together within the community,” says Janis Shulman.

Nearly 400 young adults and corporate sponsors attended a pre-glow, Groovin’ Lounge, held on the suite level at the Fox Theatre. The event, underwritten by Quicken Loans, was chaired by Board members Michelle Bass, Jodi Fox, Katie Katz and Rachel Lachover. The gala featured a strolling supper and cocktails catered by Quality Kosher Catering.

One special highlight of the evening’s festivities was the opportunity for the men and women from two JARC homes to attend a “meet and greet” with The Rascals. It was a brush with stardom and provided them all with some fantastic memories of a wonderful event.

Memories Made at Summer Club SceneJARC and JVS partnered once again this year for the four-week Summer Club Scene program. As a result of last year’s success, an additional session was added allowing twice as many young adults to participate. For two days, Summer Club Scene participants worked at a paid job and on the other three days they enjoyed a variety of recreational activities. Special thanks to the Camp Maas Tikkun Olam Teen Foundation for a generous grant which helped to fund the program. Also thanks to the Barron C.L.A.S.S. Fund.

SHE Event Benefits JARCOn October 10, 2013, SHE, a Bloomfield Hills women’s fashion boutique created and managed by Sharon Eisenshtadt, held a special day of shopping to benefit JARC. The event featured a personal appearance by Ramy Sharp, designer of the Ramy Brook collection sold exclusively in Metro Detroit at SHE. Sought-after jewelry designer Mauri Pioppo also made a personal appearance with a special showing of her trendsetting jewelry designs worn by many television and movie celebrities. The event raised over $3,200 for JARC.

A Field of Dreams — Football with Bill

From the time I arrived at his home to pick him up for the event, Bill was overwhelmed with excitement and anticipation. When we arrived at Ford Field there was just a sea of blue and gray as far as the eye could see. Many fans had on similar jerseys to the one Bill was wearing. We purchased pizza and pop on our way to our seats. Throughout the game Bill and I would discuss what was going on and how the arena looked, using ASL (American Sign Language). He and I enjoyed every moment, and he was pleased to know that the jersey he was wearing, #21, the same as Reggie Bush, would prove to be a lucky one. Reggie Bush was the MVP of the game! To top off the experience, the Lion’s managed to pull off an amazing 10-point victory over the Vikings! The entire experience was a dream come true for Bill and me.

There was a hint of autumn in the air on Sunday, September 15, 2013 when a record-breaking 81 volunteers helped assemble and decorate sukkahs at fifteen JARC homes. The spirit of Sukkot was reflected in the wonderful structures that were lovingly erected and adorned. After all the hard work, everyone enjoyed a refreshing snack and already began making plans to do it again next year.

Volunteer at JARC & Make a Difference!

Volunteering at JARC can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.

JARC volunteers do much more than simply give of their time and talents. They form relationships that can change the lives of everyone involved in remarkable ways.

Over 65 volunteers represented JARC as one of this year’s gate charities at Arts, Beats and Eats in downtown Royal Oak. This successful Labor Day weekend event featured food, music and street vendors. JARC and other charities received a generous portion of the event proceeds. This was the fourth time JARC was invited to participate in this event.
