PRESIDENT’S REPORT
In taking up the role of President of Gymnastics ACT (GACT) I did so with a real sense of nervous
excitement. I had enjoyed watching my son compete for a number of years and always felt this sport is
such a foundation for all human movement it had a real role to fill not only at the elite level but at the
broad participation level as well.
GACT vision is to promote, develop and grow Gymnastics for the enjoyment of all. It is a simple but
descriptive way to describe exactly what we should be seeking to achieve.
The GACT Committee had three directors change at the last AGM so it was appropriate to examine what
we were doing and how we were doing it. The previous Committee had left a solid legacy but it is always
relevant to strive for improvements where possible. The area of participation became a focus as ACT had
seen little growth in registered gymnasts since 2007. This was in stark contrast to the broader
participation in gymnastics across Australia.
The Committee agreed that over the next three years we would seek to “achieve significant gains in
participation growth and participant satisfaction conducted through safe and welcoming environments.”
To that end the Committee developed a Strategic Plan which included the following goals:
1. Increase total GACT registered members to at least 4000
2. Gymnastics to be recognised as the authority in fundamental movement programs in the ACT
3. Increase the number of Technical Members by 100
4. Fully implement the new coach education framework, Club quality assurance program and National
CRM platform
5. At least 3 podium performances at Australian MAG and WAG Championships
Page 6
PRESIDENT’S REPORT CONTINUED
6. At least 1 podium performance at Australian ACRO or Trampoline Championships
7. Develop an agreed strategic direction for the sport
8. Agreement of the roles and responsibilities between GACT and clubs
9. GACT Event Strategy with full cost recovery.
The focus in our first year of the plan has been to establish the governance and control mechanisms. This
is now well advanced and will provide a strong foundation moving forward. We will continue this work
with the Clubs to ensure all our members have the opportunity to enjoy gymnastics.
I would like to sincerely thank all of our volunteers who provide their time unselfishly. Without this
contribution the organisation would simply not operate. I would also like to thank the staffs at GACT who
are wonderfully led by Mary Schumacher. Our sport of 3000+ members is well served by this very small
but professional team.
In closing I would like to thank Tony Davidson who stood down from the role of President in 2013. Your
contribution was both valued and significant.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Management
Gymnastics in the ACT continues to grow and it is my pleasure again to report on the many achievements
of the past year.
In 2013, Athlete Membership grew by 8.4% and Technical Membership grew by 20.2% year on year in
comparison to 2012 with Gymnastics ACT (GACT) recording 3,374 Athlete Members and 125 Technical
Members. GACT also maintained an annual surplus which allows us to continue investing the funds back
into developing the sport.
At the beginning of 2013 GACT along with the other states and territories formally adopted Gymnastics Australia's (GA) strategic framework and agreed to have one strategic direction for the sport. Over the last 12 months we have worked hard on achieving the activities we set for 2013/14 and I strongly believe that we have made a very good start in reaching our 2016 goals. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members of the GACT Management Committee for their strong leadership and guidance. I look forward to continue working with you all in 2014. 2013 saw the implementation of a new position, ACT Events and Sports Development Officer (ESDO), within the Office Staff structure to coordinate GACT’s events and ensure the continued improvement of our events for everyone involved, including the participants, spectators, officials and volunteers. I would like to welcome Paul Jeffrey to GACT. 2013 also saw the appointment of Profound Productions to administer the association’s finances.
Our Facility Plan has been well received and has opened up the opportunity for us to have discussions with a variety of groups about how Gymnastics can use preexisting facilities and be involved in the discussions of the development of new facilities.
We continued our partnership with the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT). Two students from the Diploma of Sports Development completed their volunteer work placement hours assisting Paul in his ESDO role. In 2013, we also developed a new partnership with the University of Canberra (UC). A third year student studying a Degree in Sport and Exercise Science completed an Internship with GACT. During her Internship, the student completed a Coach Recruitment Campaign. The aim of the Campaign was to attract new Coaches to the sport. The Campaign’s target audience was students from Secondary Schools, Universities and CIT.
On behalf of GACT I would like to congratulate Lyndal Bowron for being recognised at Sport and Recreation Services Annual Thanks Awards 2013 for her outstanding volunteer contribution to gymnastics in the ACT. Recognition well deserved. The award was presented at a function held at the National Press Club.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ’S REPORT CONTINUED
Gymsports
The Technical Directors have kindly reported on the outstanding results throughout the year in their
Gymsport Reports. I would like to congratulate all of the ACT gymnasts and their coaches on a very
successful year. I would like to make a special acknowledgement once again to James Bacueti for
representing Australia at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival and his coach Zou Li Min who was selected
as the assistant coach for the Australian Team and Jack Ratz selected as one of the Australian Chaperones
at the 2013 World Age Group Championships for Trampoline. I would also like to congratulate Hannah
Breynard for representing Australia at the New Zealand National Championships.
By the end of 2013 the ACT successfully achieved most of their LaunchPad yearly targets and came very
close to reaching those targets that they did not achieve. At the end of 2013 the ACT achieved their targets
of three certified LaunchPad Clubs and 21 LaunchPad certified Coaches. I would like to take this
opportunity to congratulate Canberra City Gymnastics Club (CCGC) and Jitterbugs Gymfun on receiving
their Stamp of Approval and becoming certified LaunchPad Clubs. We did not achieve our yearly targets for
the number of teachers who participated in a LaunchPad Teachers Workshop (159) or Athlete Membership
between the ages of 0-12 years (3373) but we came close. At the end of 2013, 86 teachers had participated
in a LaunchPad Teachers Workshop and we had 3149 Athlete Members between the ages of 0-12.
Gymnastics provides the necessary foundations for lifelong participation in physical activity. Teaching
children how to move and move well is Gymnastics core business. Our coaches are movement experts and
we want to inspire kids to want to move and like to move. With the assistance of our Clubs we will
continue to advocate that fundamental movement is an essential life skill for a child's development and
Gymnastics is the primary provider of fundamental movement programs in the ACT community.
In 2013, we began to develop a partnership with the Physical Activity Foundation (PAF) and I was elected
on the Primary Physical Education Support Network (PPESN) Leadership Group. PAF promotes healthy
lifestyle habits to local children and their carers. The Foundations focus is on inactive kids and their goal is
to get ALL KIDS, MORE ACTIVE, MORE OFTEN. They work alongside community organisations who also
want to make a difference to kids’ futures. The PPESN main objective is to create a unified approach to
supporting the delivery of physical activity, physical education and sport experiences in ACT Primary
Schools. We will continue to develop these partnerships in 2014 and develop new partnerships with
likeminded groups who are as passionate as we are to promote the importance of lifelong participation in
physical activity.
I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank each of our Technical Directors, Judging Co-
coordinators, Coaching Coordinator, Sport Management Committee Members, Judges and Volunteers. The
time you all volunteer to ensure that all of the Gymnasts are performing at their best, having fun and
building new friendships is outstanding.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT CONTINUED
Events
In 2013 there was a total of 17 ACT Competitions held. There were five Men’s (MAG) Competitions, ten
Women’s (WAG) Competitions and two Gymnastics for All (GfA) Events. All of the clubs continue to provide
support and assistance to GACT by allowing us to use their venues for events during the year as well as
managing club volunteers to host the many events. To all of the member clubs and volunteers our sincere
thank you for your continued support during 2013.
The 2013 Australian Championships for MAG, WAG, Trampoline (TRP) and Acrobatics (ACR) was conducted over a two week period in the ACT July school holidays (6th – 18th July) at the State Sports Centre in Homebush, Sydney. There were a total of 59 members in the ACT team. The team consisted of 30 gymnasts and 29 officials. The Championships this year for the ACT was very successful. The team returned home with 5 Gold medals, 6 Silver medals and 3 Bronze medals. Six WAG athletes and four officials also represented the ACT at the 2013 QLD Border Challenge in Caloundra. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Team Officials who travelled with the teams and assisted with the preparations leading up to the event.
EDUCATION
2013 saw GA begin the implementation of a new Coaching Framework. The new Framework now allows a Coach to receive a nationally recognized qualification in Sports Coaching in addition to an Accreditation in Gymnastics Coaching. The ACT was one of four states who delivered the pilot Beginners Face to Face Coaching Course. To up skill our Presenters/Assessors so they were able to deliver the Coaching Courses in the new Framework, Regional Group Training (RGT) were organised to deliver the Certificate IV in Training and Education (TAE) to four ACT Presenters/Assessors. A grant received from ACT Sport and Recreation Services (SRS) provided funding for all four Presenters/Assessors. All four Presenters/Assessors were successful in gaining their qualification. I would like to thank the ACT State Presenters for all of their hard work, enthusiasm and commitment to make sure that the transition to the new Coaching Framework was as smooth as it could have been.
GACT also assisted GA with the task of transitioning all of the ACT Coaches across to the new Framework and assisted with the appeals process for ACT Coaches who chose to appeal their Intermediate provisional accreditation.
Page 10
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S REPORT CONTINUED
Finally I would like to once again thank SRS for their continued support and the staff from the GA Office
and ACTSPORT. As always it has been a pleasure to work with you all and we value your support.
We are already in the process of working on some exciting new initiatives for 2014 and I am really looking
forward to introducing them to our wonderful Gymnastics Community as well as the wider Community.

MEN’S ARTISTIC REPORT
I am grateful to have been given the role of Men’s Technical Director for the past year. Men’s Gymnastics is alive and well in the ACT. 2013 was a successful year both in the number of participants, the standard of competition and in the results achieved at National Championships. Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) in the ACT continues to grow and is strongly supported by the three Clubs. All three clubs were represented in both the National Levels 1-5 competitions and Levels 6-10 at Senior State Titles. As the Men’s Technical Director I also attended the Gymnastics Australia Advisory Meeting in Melbourne to ensure the ACT was represented and kept informed. COACH EDUCATION Gymnastics Australia’s new coaching accreditation system came into play in 2013. Previously accredited coaches were transitioned into the new accreditation levels and a number of new courses were rolled out. It was pleasing to see many start on the coaching pathway by completing the Beginner Coaching Course. Gymnastics ACT also ran a Coaching Congress in January. MAG was well represented with excellent presentations from Martin Shields, Olga Karelina and Tony Hilton. A big thank you to all of the presenters and to Gymnastics ACT staff for organizing. JUDGING Judging is such a crucial part of our sport and I’d like to thank Sue Morton for her role as Judging Coordinator. Last year we had a healthy number of participants at all of the various courses that were run. I would like to welcome all of the new judges and encourage them to continue with their judging. Thanks to Sue for running the courses. JUNIOR STATE TRAINING CLINICS Definitely the most enjoyable event on the calendar for me was the Junior State Training Clinic. The aim was to improve the standard of Men’s Gymnastics in the ACT, by providing training for both gymnasts and coaches participating in the lower levels of the GA National Levels Program. Knowledge was shared between programs and comradeship was developed between the competitive clubs. This allows gymnasts and coaches to learn new drills and gain different perspectives from other coaches. In April we held our first Junior State Clinic for some time at the Woden Valley Gymnastics Club. The clinic ended with a handstand competition that proved to be very popular with participants. A big thank you to all of the presenters involved. There are more clinics planned for 2014.
Page 12
MEN’S GYMNASTICS REPORT CONTINUED
NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS National Championships were again held at Olympic Park, Sydney in July. An ACT team comprising of 15 gymnasts competed well, with some gaining valuable experience and others achieving excellent results. It was pleasing to see the ACT get two team medals – 3rd at Level 8 (Open) and Level 9 (Open). There must be something in the ACT water because all the individual medallists won their medals on Vault: Level 8 (Open) - Gold to Adam Falzarano and Silver to Jordan Reed; Level 10 (Under 18) - Gold to James Bacueti; and Level 10 International Apparatus Finals – Gold to James Bacueti.
GYMNAST OF THE YEAR For the 3rd year in a row, James Bacueti of Woden Valley Gymnastics Club has been awarded the title of ACT Gymnast of the Year. As the ACT’s highest ranked gymnast, James achieved excellent results at National Championships and also received an individual ACTAS scholarship in March. NEW LEVELS STRUCTURE Towards the end of 2013 ACT clubs started preparing for Gymnastics Australia’s re-structure of the Men’s National Levels Program (NLP). Starting in 2014, the changes effectively mean that the age category for each level has been made younger by 1 year. This may mean that new MAG gymnasts who want to enter the ‘Elite’ competitive stream have to go straight to Level 2 or try to make up Levels as they progress up the ladder, either by missing Levels later or by doing a Level in less than 12 months. This will no doubt present challenges and possible changes to club programs however I believe that the clubs involved are prepared for these changes.
Finally I’d like to thank the club representatives and members of the MAG Sports Management Committee
for their support and work throughout 2013.

WOMEN’S ARTISTIC REPORT
I have enjoyed working as the ACT WAG Technical Director in 2013.
I was invited to attend the GA conference in Melbourne. Many different ideas were discussed about
changes to be made to the Women’s program and I look forward to seeing the changes that GA makes to
the current program.
Lesley Dickens has taken on the role of Judging coordinator after Mary Hewett stepped down from the
position. Mary has dedicated many years & many, many hours to the position of judging coordinator. She
has shared her vast amount of knowledge with many younger judges and has been an amazing teacher and
mentor to many within the ACT. Mary will be greatly missed after passing away early this year but her
memory will not be forgotten within the WAG community.
Tae Tyrell has continued in the role of ACT coaching co-coordinator. Tae has assisted Mary Schumacher
throughout the year in the preparation for the 2014 coaching congress. These types of events ensure
coaches in the ACT are provided with opportunities to further their knowledge in the sport. Thank you to
Tae and Mary for their hard work leading up to the congress.
National Championships in 2013 was another INCREDIBLE event! Our level 7-10 girls competed at a very
high standard at Nationals in Sydney in 2013. Our level 9 team had a fantastic competition and placed 2nd
in the team event. This was a huge achievement as we only had 3 girls in the team so every gymnast had to
hit every routine and they did!
I would like to make a special mention to some of our gymnasts who achieved outstanding results.
Shannon Brown 1st on Uneven Bars, 3rd on Balance Beam, 6th on Floor & 2nd All Around, Level 7.
Georgia Evans 6th on Balance Beam, Level 8.
Melanie O’Mara 3rd on Uneven Bars, Level 9.
Georgina Matan 6th on Balance Beam, Level 9.
Hannah Breynard 1st on Vault, 5th on Balance Beam and 4th All Around, Level 9.
Hannah was also selected for the Australian level 9 team. Hannah travelled with the team to New Zealand
to compete against the best gymnasts in New Zealand. A huge congratulation to Hannah for such an
amazing achievement.
Page 14
WOMEN’S ARTISTIC REPORT CONTINUED
We sent a team of level six gymnasts and two coaches to Queensland to represent the ACT at Border
Challenge in September. This was the second year Genevieve Preston and Nicole Alexander travelled
together and they once again worked extremely well together and gained a lot of experience. Our
gymnasts performed incredibly well and placed 4th in the team event.
We had 3 judges pass the FIG judges course (the highest level possible) that was run over a week at the AIS
in February. Mary Hewett, Sue Morton and I all passed the course after many hours of study. To gain this
level of accreditation shows many years of dedication to the sport and I would like to congratulate
everyone on this achievement.
Women’s gymnastics in the ACT continues to grow and I am looking forward to a successful and exciting
year ahead.

GYMNASTICS FOR ALL REPORT
The Gymnastics for All (GfA) Sport Management Committee (SMC) met regularly over the 2013 year with
representatives from Canberra City Gymnastics Club, Southern Canberra Gymnastics Club, Woden Valley
Gymnastics Club and Jitterbugs attending. All attendees provided great ideas and embraced the philosophy
of GfA with maximum participation in the brainstorming of new initiatives.
The participation numbers in the two ACT Levels Program (ALP) Events (Skills and Awards Days) were down
on previous years. The GfA SMC worked hard on reviewing the feedback received from all of the ACT Clubs
on introducing new initiatives that aimed to improve the event experience for the participants and
spectators. One of the new initiatives was the introduction of an activity sheet that could be completed by
the participants during rotations. We received positive feedback from all involved on the new activity
sheet.
A review of the ALP routines is underway with the outcome to be advised in 2014. Changes are already
underway with the inclusion for the first time in 2014 of a Challenge for gymnasts who are six or turning six
during the year into the Skills and Awards Day events.
A GfA Intermediate coaches course was scheduled for October unfortunately due to low numbers this
course was cancelled.

ACROBATICS REPORT
NUMBERS
The competition season started in April with the qualifying events for NSW State Championships and
finishing with National Championships in July in Sydney. The competition season was successful with many
groups proving to be competitive at the NSW events and at National Championships including having a
national champion level 6 men’s pair.
Numbers in the recreational group has been fairly consistent over the past year, and the development
squad has waxed and waned with people moving interstate, or being moved into other groups.
This was also a long year with the Level 4 and 5 groups having their own competition cycle, which was
different from the previous years where they were included in National Championships. 2013 was also the
inaugural year for our development squad competing in the L1-3 competitions in NSW.
COURSES
No courses were offered this past year, specifically for Acro, however, we had attendance of some of our
athletes through the GfA Intermediate and Beginner Coach courses.
No judging courses were run as the courses were being updated to account for the new code and new
judging levels.
COMPETITIONS
Level 6+
The National Level Acrobats competed at three competitions in NSW from April through to June 2013 –
two trials and NSW State Championships. The ACT/Woden Valley Gymnastics Club had the following
results:
NSW State Championships
Level 7 Mixed Pair – Emi Callaway and Lachlan Darrow – 2nd place
Level 6 Men’s Pair – Ethan Darrow and Jack Lord – 1st place
Level 6 Women’s Pair – Sara Moseley and Ashley Harveyson – 3rd place
Level 3A – 5
NSW Country Championships
Level 4 Women’s Trio – Alex Fladun-Dorling, Belinda Major and Rachel Moseley – 3rd place

CONCLUSION
Congratulations to all ACT gymnasts, coaches and officials for an excellent year. Also, a special thank you
must be said to Nicole Vlahovich (for choreography, judging and technical assistance), Hayley Fisher
(technical assistance and judging), to the NSW acrobatics community for their support and allowing us to
participate in their competitions, and to all of the athletes and their families for their support.

TRAMPOLINE REPORT
2013 was a good year for trampoline, with ever increasing numbers of recreational programs growing in
the ACT people are starting to look into the sport as more than a once a week class for their children to
attend
The competition squad from Woden Valley Gymnastics Club have been competing in a number of events
including NSW State Age and Elite Championships, National Club Championships in QLD and Club
Competitions all around the Sydney area.
2013 Australian Championships was a really good year for the ACT, with a silver and a bronze medal, points
that helped the UTA gain the Synchronized Trampoline overall trophy and finalists in 4 events. 2013 would
be one of our most successful Australian Championships to date
In trampoline sports in the ACT we seem to be building quite a good base of recreational athletes and I can
now see that these numbers are bleeding through to the competition stream, this should boost our
numbers of competitive athletes in the coming years and it is quite an exciting time in the sport.
