Dear Friends,

The West Suburban YMCA is proud to serve the residents of Newton and surrounding communities in what is now our 140th year. In 2016, we took bold steps to ensure that our YMCA addressed the needs of our community, members and participants. Two of these steps included new pricing and financial assistance models and a significant renovation of our Church Street facility lobby and first floor program space. We are stronger than ever due to working partnerships with community leaders, an engaged and vibrant membership base and the generosity of many people and organizations.

Our 2016 highlights include: » an expanded child protection and safety program » a new and expanded year-round Preschool Center for Child Development poised

to serve working families » a Kids’ Corner program doubled in size that offers a nurturing environment while

caregivers use the facility » expanded wellness space and studios enable us to serve more active older adults and

offer more LIVESTRONG at the YMCA cancer survivor programs » a renovated lobby and reception area allowing individuals and families to convene,

communicate and connect » continued investment and updates to our camps in Wayland and East Brookfield » a 16% growth in membership and program participation

Our Board of Directors and staff are hard at work on our next strategic plan, charting the course for our Y’s response to ever-changing community needs. One theme that will remain constant in our future is our commitment to serve ALL. We demonstrate this commitment every day in our programming for individ-uals of all abilities, through our diversity and inclusion initiatives and through our financial aid program, making every Y activity more accessible. In this year’s Annual Report, we are proud to share the impact our Y has had in the community and on individuals and families who participate in our Y programs and services. We are thankful for the dedication of our staff, the leadership of our Board of Director’s and the confidence and faith given to us by our donors, community and strategic partners.

2016 Board Chair, David Humphrey (left), Mayor Setti Warren (center) and President & CEO, Jack Fucci (right), celebrate our grand re-opening in October 2016.

OUR FOCUS ON YOUTH DEVELOPMENTNurturing the Potential of Every Child and Teen

At the Y, we recognize that successful youth development requires a holistic approach

focused on achieving certain social-emotional, cognitive and physical milestones. Youth need

positive adult and peer role models, and they need to feel physically and emotionally safe to

thrive. We put caring people in children’s lives who nurture them along their journey to

adulthood, so they can become active, thriving and contributing members of society.

My daughter has grown as a musician and a person this year because of the West Suburban YMCA’s Center for the Creative Arts (YCCA) Rock Band program. She has told me that she has “found her people” and even on a tough day, band practice has brought her joy.

She has more confidence and has taken more risks in her music and academically. We were stunned that she chose to sing this session!!!

This is a kid who has verbalized that she likes that she can “hide behind her drum set”. So, truly and deeply, I thank you both from the bottom of my heart for all you are doing for our daughter and all the kids taking advantage of this amazing resource our community has here at the West Suburban YMCA. OUR FOCUS ON HEALTHY LIVINGImproving Our Community’s Health & Well-Being

At the Y, we enhance the quality of life in our community by helping individuals, kids and families

improve their health and well-being. With a focus on prevention, we give people the resources and

support they need, whether their goal is to maintain wellness, reduce the risk of chronic disease or

reclaim good health.

A good friend of mine was feeling down about her aging mother. I told her about the West Suburban YMCA and all the seniors that come daily to exercise, socialize and stay connected to their community. Our seniors play cards and go on trips that are organized by the Y. I told her that her mother would be nowhere near the oldest or most impacted by health issues. In fact, her mother might just find she has it better than most if she could just get here and see for herself.

Now, my friend’s mother has been a thriving member of the Y for many months. She even has a personal trainer! She is becoming much stronger and more confident with each visit. She has made friends and looks forward to coming to see them while at the Y. Her spirits are way up and she is comfortable using her oxygen tank when needed without fear of others judging her. As she told her daughter, “No one at the Y judges you. They just embrace you as you are.

OUR FOCUS ON SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYGiving Back and Providing Support to Our Neighbors

At the Y, we believe the desire to belong and help others is human nature, and everyone has

something of value to contribute to the greater good. We serve as a catalyst for positive

change in communities, bringing people together and giving them opportunities to make

a meaningful difference in the lives of others and their own lives. We are devoted to engaging

and connecting all segments of our community. Everyone is welcome here. We believe diversity

enriches and enlivens our Y.

The West Suburban YMCA gave me the support that I knew I deserved to challenge some of the obstacles in my life. The Y provided my daughter with quality and affordable care, eliminating one major obstacle I didn’t have to worry about. She was in good hands. She had a community to teach her how to swim, to teach her how to play sports, to ask her about her day at school, and to make

sure she felt happy at the end of each day. It was the community we really needed and the community that helped shape who she is today. Our lives have changed so much and I want to thank the YMCA for helping me get to where I needed and deserved to be. I hope you continue to make an impact in the lives of young women and children, like us. Natasha - Newton, MA
