Retired Art Teacher Dennis Dvorak recently

designed and painted a colorful mural in the

Raven Stream Elementary media center. The

concept for the mural centered on the idea

that art can be functional as well as beautiful.

The mural is an instructional tool for students

while in media class as well as a piece of art

to be enjoyed by all.

Dvorak designed the mural and gave short

art lessons to the students explaining the

process of designing and painting a mural.

It took several weeks to complete the mural,

so the students were able to experience the

progress of the painting and the excitement

of seeing the artwork created.

Principal Pat Pribyl is extremely pleased with

this project, “We are so proud and impressed

with the work that Mr. Dvorak did at Raven

Stream. He not only came in and designed

and painted the mural, but he taught the

students something each time he was in

doing work on the mural (even though it was

not part of his responsibility). Once a teacher,

always a teacher.”

The end product has images that correlate

with the Dewey Decimal System in which

the media center resources are arranged.

The Dewey Decimal System has ten main

categories and within each group Dvorak

has painted images that correspond

appropriately. General Works is represented

in the mural as a vibrant green alien.

Philosophy shows a group of multicultural

children playing together happily. The

third class is Religion which encompasses

mythology and is shown by a whimsical

Pegasus. Paul Bunyan is expertly painted

to scale as part of a tall tale in the Social

Science area. Language is pictured by the

Greek alphabet hanging high in a tree. The

vivid solar system and the giant chartreuse

dinosaur in the mural correspond to Science.

Technology is shown by the airplane in flight.

The Arts are represented by musical notes

and a painting palette. Literature is shown

by the child peacefully reading in the tree.

The last group is History and Geography,

demonstrated by the large map of Minnesota.

“The whole experience was excellent,” said

Raven Stream Media Specialist Lisa Meyer,

“and we are thrilled to be able to enjoy this

beautiful mural for many years to come.”

On the Cover…This season’s brochure cover art is an original design by New Prague High School senior Jaimie Niedermayer, completed for drawing class. The assignment was to select an object to draw—in her case a tree—outline that object, and then fill in the “negative” spaces. Jaimie’s piece was selected by her instructor, Mrs. Barb Prchal, for display in the annual Student Art Show. Jaimie likes Mrs. Prchal’s approach to teaching, “She gives you room to do your own thing and gives us good advice on colors, etc.” Jaimie has participated in gymnastics (all around) and track (long jump, pole vault, and sprint), and intends to pursue a degree in physical therapy following graduation. She is twin sister to Jessica, also an artist, and older sister to Liza and Tucker. Her mother Ann is owner of Southern Exposure Creative Photography in New Prague, and her father Ray is a process engineer for Skyline Displays.

Holiday Folk MusicCommunity members are invited to join Mala Strana residents for a concert by Curtis and Loretta Simonet. Call Community Education at 952-758-1734 for a ticket (20 available to community mem-bers). Must have a ticket to attend the concert.Date: Monday, 12/3Time: 2:30pmPlace: Mala Strana Health Care CenterFee: FREE, but ticket required (20 available)

Early Childhood Family Education . . . growing & learning together What is ECFE? Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) is a Community Education program of the New Prague Area Schools. ECFE provides quality learning opportunities and resources for parents of young children between birth and kindergarten age. Opportunities include weekly daytime and evening classes, special one-time events and field trips.

Most ECFE classes begin with parents and children playing together in the early childhood room. Fun learning activities are planned. After a short circle time, parents move to the parent room. Parent discussion is lead by a licensed parent educator. The children continue with the licensed early childhood teacher. In other classes, parents and children play and learn together the entire time.

Most classes meet once a week for 1.5 hours. Childcare is provided for children not enrolled in class. All families are welcome. Fees are on a sliding scale. No one will be denied participation due to inability to pay.

Why should I take an ECFE class? • It’s a great place to spend special time with your child. • Your child will learn, play, and discover. • Parents will get information and support. • Classes are affordable and fun!
