Welcome & GuidanceI am delighted to introduce this year’s enrichment programme. You will find in this booklet a wealth of diverse, engaging activities for all ages and interests. The impact that an active involvement in enrichment can have on academic attainment should not be underestimated. Many of the skills developed through enrichment activities are

directly transferable to the academic arena. These include problem-solving, working as a team and performing under pressure in front of an audience. The necessary self-discipline and commitment that is needed for success in these areas is also mirrored in the classroom. Wherever a child’s interests lie, this enrichment programme is designed to give each individual the opportunity to discover their talents and develop them further.

We believe that the enrichment programme is an integral part of the education that our pupils experience at Ipswich High School and that it is taking part in these activities outside the classroom that allows them to become confident, flexible and resilient young adults, ready to take on future challenges. All of the activities add value, enrich knowledge and tap into unknown potential - equipping them with the skills and values needed to meet the challenges of a changing society and to provide the best possible educational foundation for life.

If you have any questions or feedback about our enrichment programme, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Assistant Head Co-Curricular

Senior School GuidanceIn the majority of cases, pupils will choose an activity for one term. Pupils in the Senior School should balance their enrichment timetable with three or four study sessions per week. As pupils prepare for their GCSEs and A Levels, they may need to allow more sessions for study.

Pupils in Year 9 and above are encouraged to build their leadership experience through volunteering with a Prep School activity. They can choose one long enrichment activity in which to assist the Prep School enrichment programme. Volunteering is part of the Duke of Edinburgh requirements and assisting with a Prep School activity could contribute.

Prep School GuidanceIn the Prep School, the following guidance applies:

Years 1 to 3 should choose an enrichment activity from 12.50 - 13.30 twice a week and can opt to attend an afternoon enrichment from 15.45 - 16.15 twice a week should they wish.

Years 4 to 6 should choose an enrichment activity from 12.50 - 13.30 two to three times a week, and an enrichment activity every day from 15.45 - 16.15, except Friday.

Please refer to your Year group/Prep School timetable when making your choices and read the descriptions found in this booklet to check if this activity is for you.

Completion of choicesPlease complete the enrichment choices timetable found in your welcome pack and online and return to the Senior School Reception or Registrar.

Oversubscription and undersubscriptionIf a club is oversubscribed, pupils may need to undertake a second choice. If a club is undersubscribed, the activity may not run and pupils may need to undertake a second choice.

Academic Extension Senior School

Academic Scholars Programme (Years 7 & 8) Academic Scholars participate in an independent enquiry project based around a theme which changes every year. Pupils complete work both in school during a supported enrichment session and also complete a significant amount of work in their own time. The nature of the projects are entirely driven by the Academic Scholars themselves. Teachers are available to help pupils if they are a completing projects with a particular subject slant and there is an Academic Scholars Mentor, which is currently the Deputy Head.

Beginners Bridge ‘No matter where I go, I can always make new friends at the bridge table,’ - Martina Navratilova. If you have never played Bridge but like card games, or if you are already a keen Bridge player, you will enjoy this enrichment. It is a great way to challenge your mind, think in a new way and learn to respond to different situations. It is brilliant exercise for your brain and you will gain a great deal from it whilst having lots of fun! ‘Playing bridge reflects intelligence. It’s one of the really great pleasures of life. Anybody who’s missing bridge is missing so much in life,’ - Malcolm Forbes.

Big Bang ChallengeThe Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Competition aims to recognise and reward young people’s achievements in all areas of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and provide them with the opportunity to build their skills and confidence in project-based work.

Chess Club Come and play chess with your friends.

Creative Writing Budding authors and poets, come and join our group of aspiring writers. We share ideas, play word games, swap characters, create scenarios for murder, detectives, ghosts and adventures! Working together in a group can build your confidence and give you even more ideas to share and put on paper. Build up your own portfolio of stories and poems in your own writing journal. We also enter competitions to publish our work. Be brave, be bold and be a writer!

Debating SocietyThe Debating Society will provide pupils with an opportunity to discuss current affairs, including politics, in both a formal and informal setting. The format will be one of open discussion, but pupils will be encouraged to prepare formal speeches where they may take on roles as proposers of motions, main speakers or summing up arguments. No previous experience is required, just an ability to think intelligently, argue coherently and listen politely-a set of skills that are often easy to aspire to but not always adhere to in the midst of heated debate! This option would be ideal for anyone with an interest in History, Politics, English and a career that requires the requisite skills to debate well, in particular Law and Politics.

English Theatre and FilmIf you are interested in the theatre and enjoy watching first-class live productions, without having to travel all the way to London or Stratford, then the English Theatre and Film Club is for you. We have teamed up with Digital Theatre to access a range of award-winning, acclaimed theatre performances, which include: “All My Sons”, “Far From the Madding Crowd”, “Much Ado About Nothing”, “King Lear”, “A Doll’s House” and “Into the Woods”. One of the things that is so nice about watching these plays in this way is that we are able to pause the action and discuss the plot/characters/themes, thus making great theatre accessible to all.

This year we are extending our repertoire and including other great literary works in film. As well as being thoroughly entertaining, joining this club will really broaden your literary horizons.

Greek Mythology We learn about the famous Greek myths, but the interests of whoever comes to the club decide which ones. We watch clips from films (e.g. Disney Hercules, Percy Jackson), we read and act out scenes from plays, we draw, we give mini presentations, and generally share our knowledge and enjoyment of stories from the Greek myths.

Jelly Babies: The Movie (Years 8 & 9)

Sciencey stuff with jelly babies, filmed and edited with your own plot-lines, potentially ranging from family-friendly to horribly scary. There are twelve spaces for this activity.

Jigsaw Club A fun and challenging puzzle club, giving pupils the opportunity to try the most difficult of jigsaw puzzles.

Public SpeakingPublic speaking is an important life skill that can often seem daunting and difficult. This enrichment group explores the origins and purposes of rhetoric, and teaches students to be confident and effective orators. From speech writing and delivery to paralinguistic features such as stance, gesticulation and expression, this club will make you feel more prepared for those moments when you have to speak in front of a crowd. For those who wish to do so, there will be opportunities to take part in public speaking competitions, both in school and beyond.

SAS - Serious About Science Serious about Science is for keen and ambitious Sixth Form scientists to explore well beyond the science curriculum. We will consider a range of topics such as the Chemistry of Superbases, the radiocarbon dating of Richard III’s remains, to the nature of indium tin oxides in electrically conducting touch screens. This is suited to those making competitive science applications beyond Sixth Form and will require a willingness to be academically stretched and an openness to discuss challenging problems.

Tech-Know Squad If you would like to find out how you can turn any item into a computer touchpad, rig up a security camera or build a PC? Become part of the Tech–Know Squad and you will become an expert on all the latest technology. A practical club ideal for those who are interested in how things work, like taking things to bits and for future inventors. If you know a Raspberry Pi isn’t edible then you already have the knowledge to be part of the team!

Varsity Maths A maths club to extend and challenge those that love maths. We will explore more wide-ranging maths topics not included in the normal curriculum.

EPQExtended Project Qualification (EPQ), Sixth Form

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)is a Sixth Form equivalent of a HPQ, but is a more extensive and complex independent project. It is assessed in a very similar way, and there are also a series of ‘taught skills’ which supports students at the start of their project. Students are assigned a ‘mentor’ which students meet on a regular basis to discuss their project. EPQs are becoming more and more popular at Ipswich High School as they act as an alternative to a fourth A Level. Additionally, a high grade in an EPQ can result in a lower University offer as EPQs are highly valued by many Universities. It is therefore recommended that students pursue an EPQ in an area of study that they wish to pursue beyond A level.

Higher Project Qualification (HPQ)

The Higher Project Qualification (HPQ) is an independent project that is completed by pupils in Years 9,10 or 11 and is equivalent to half a GCSE. There are series of lessons on ‘taught skills’ during enrichment which help to guide pupils in research and analysis. Pupils chose topics that are of particular interest to them, and frame them as a question to create a project ‘title’. The end ‘product’ can be a long written project or an ‘artefact’ with an accompanying short piece of writing.

Pupils are assigned a ‘mentor’ who supports them throughout their project. The final assessment is based on the project itself, a production log and a presentation. The HPQ acts as an excellent gateway into the EPQ at Sixth Form. EPQ Taught Skills (Year 13 Only) Year 13 students should only opt for the Extended Project Qualification if they have completed the Initial Planning in Year 12 and have already made progress with their preliminary research. You must attend the Taught Skills enrichment session and you will be allocated one of the supervisor sessions.

EPQ Taught Skills (Year 12 Only) The Extended Project Qualification provides an opportunity for students to extend their abilities beyond their A level specifications, developing skills in independent research and project management. It is awarded UCAS points worth half an A Level and is very positively received by Universities. Students carry out research on a topic that they have chosen, which is not covered by their other qualifications. They use this research to produce a written report and, in the case of practical projects, an artefact. There are taught skills and a supervisor to guide candidates through the process but the supervisor does not guide the content of the project. You must attend the Taught Skills enrichment session and you will be allocated a supervisor session once you have chosen your area of enquiry. This option is highly recommended to all Year 12 students.

The emphasis is on having fun and working creatively in response to a wide variety of tasks and stimuli.

School Production 2019: ‘Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’For those who have been successful in our school production auditions, enrichment sessions are used for the majority of rehearsals. A schedule will give the focus for each rehearsal, and the rest of the cast will be involved in practising what has already been set. As we get closer to the performance date, there will be a few longer sessions (until 6pm), two full-day weekend rehearsals and two days off timetable in the last few weeks; these dates will be on the schedule that will be sent out in the autumn term. It is expected that cast members attend every rehearsal. The performance dates are 6th, 7th, 8th February 2018, so the commitment lasts for three half terms. Hayworth Players (Years 7 to 13)

The first project for the Hayworth Players this year is our abridged version of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’. For those who have been successful in our Shakespeare Schools Festival auditions, we will have an intensive rehearsal period that leads up to our performance on 6th November 2018.

Our technical and dress rehearsals will take place in the morning, and the performances will start at 7pm; the evening will contain performances by Chantry Academy and Sidegate Primary School. There is also a company workshop on 17th September at Dance East (13:30 – 16:00) that all cast members must attend. In order to ensure we have a high quality performance to take to this professional theatre environment, there will be at least one full-day weekend rehearsal and one day off-timetable in school. As we move onto the next project, a new cast will be selected, by audition.

Hayworth Production and Technical Team (Years 7-13)You are welcome to come and join our team of designers and technicians who help provide lighting, sound, set, props, costume, make-up, marketing and front-of-house for school performance events. We hold one group session each week, but you will also have some work to complete in preparation for each production, and may need to attend rehearsals and performances. We are very pleased to be working alongside the new ‘Prop Studio’, which will be of interest to those who want to learn how to make items needed for our stage productions.
