Parachute Lab

• Over the next few class periods, we will be using our knowledge and skills from this unit about scientific inquiry to perform a lab.

• Let’s read from our lab instructions sheet to find out what we’re doing for the lab!

Parachute LabGOAL: To design and build a parachute that serves a specific purpose (staying in the air the longest). ROLE: Parachute design team for Performance DesignsAUDIENCE: CEO and Board Members of Performance DesignsSITUATION: As members of the parachute design team for the company Performance Designs, your boss has asked your team to develop a brand new parachute to market to customers. Your parachute must serve a purpose – to stay in the air the longest. PRODUCT: Design and carry out a scientifically based experiment to test and determine the best parachute that carries out the specific performance. STANDARDS and CRITERIA: See the Rubric below

Parachute Lab

• You won’t be completing this entire lab in one day, we will be working over the course of a few class periods to complete this entire lab.

• Today you will work on the following: Writing a scientific question Using background knowledge Forming a hypothesis Identifying variables Writing materials Writing a procedure

Parachute Lab

• You will work with your table groups to design the lab that you will perform next class period.

• You might not have enough time to write everything down with your group but you will have time to write down parts of your discussion and complete your thoughts during the independent practice.

• Use the following sentence stems to have discussions with your table group:• An idea is…• My guess is…• I think…• The way I would solve the

problem is…• My suggestion would be

_______ because…• I agree/disagree

because…

Independent PracticeParachute Lab

• Now you will use the discussion you have had with your group to finalize your first page of the lab report.

• By the end of class, the following should be completed:

Scientific Question Hypothesis Variables Materials Procedure

• Work silently and independently

Answer the questions on a notecard silently and stack at your table group when you are finished.

1. Did we encounter any problems in our experiment so far? If so, what were they and why do you think they occurred? If not, why do you think your experiment went so well?

2. At this point, do you think our data supports or rejects our hypothesis? Why or why not?
