Welcome to Bí Gnóthach 2010-2011

I am happy to report that this past years Bí Gnóthach Primary School

Enterprise programme has once again exceeded our expectations. 47 schools

took part in the 2009/10 programme representing approximately 1700

students who, with indomitable energy, set up a great variety of business projects

and traded their wares both inside and outside the classroom. Healthy bakeries,

colourful headbands, DVD’s, Valentines gift bags, Christmas crafts, school fairs,

cinema days, gardening projects, plant sales – from the wide range of ideas it is

evident that there is no shortage of creativity among our primary school students

and you knew what would work in your communities. What is more you enjoyed

the process according to the reports in your enterprise diaries! The icing on the

cake is that most of you made a profit and generously donated those profits back

into your schools & chosen charities. Many lucky charities are richer this year

on account of your efforts - in fact Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital in Crumlin is

thousands better off this year as a result of the combined efforts of the South

Dublin Bí Gnóthach entrepreneurs.

We were impressed by your Enterprise Diaries, your business ideas and the

project materials you presented for the library display and in our minds,

you are all winners. So much so that it was very difficult to choose

projects from all the schools participating. However, in the end, the seven schools

selected demonstrated accomplishment in a key business

area. The presentation of the awards on May 26th to student

representatives and teachers in the County Library Tallaght was

the icing on the cake and we were delighted that the local

press captured the occasion.

We look forward to seeing the exciting and

creative business projects to come from you - our

entrepreneurs of the future - and we look forward to

working with you over the coming year.

Teachers View

“This was a terrific learning experience for both myself and the children. We discovered we had quite a few ingenious sales personnel in our class and we quickly uncovered the importance of quality raw materials. Skills of teamwork, innovation and persistence were developed and the children generously donated their profit to “Wells for Zoe” Thus not only did the experience provide an avenue for enterprise but also helped inspire the children’s social conscience. A very worthwhile project indeed!”

P. Cleary, Clondalkin

“Thank you so much for a very enjoyable Award Ceremony in Tallaght Library. Our pupils were thrilled with the Award. Fifth class pupils gained many valuable skills during their participation on the Bi Gnothach project. It was extremely worthwhile and we hope to get involved again next year”

O. Higgins Tallaght

Congratulations to all who took part in 2009/10!
