All  non-‐residenMal  buildings  including  Offices,  Hospitality,  Retail,  Campus    Mostly  for  voice  coverage,  not  data  capacity    Mostly  focused  on  3G

Outdoor  public  areas  with  some  in-‐building  penetraMon    Mostly  for  data  capacity    Some  3G,  more  interest  for  4G

Typical  Enterprise  Small  Cells

•  Similar  to  residenMal  femtocells,  except  – Higher  RF  power,  providing  wider  area  coverage  – Higher  traffic  capacity,  typically  16  user  – Powered  via  Ethernet  (PoE)  – Wall  mounted,  usually  neutral  and  unobtrusive

Cisco’s  Snap-‐On  Upgrade  Cisco’s  USC  5310  “snap-‐on”  for  Aeronet  3600  series

•  Upgrades  exisMng  Wi-‐Fi  access  point  to  3G  – Full  3G  small  cell,  8  user,  21  Mbps  – Single  Ethernet  cable  powers  enMre  unit  – Minimal  impact,  straighlorward  upgrade  – Typically  only  needed  for  a  few  Wi-‐Fi  hotspots

3G  vs  LTE  vs  MulMmode

•  Today,  mostly  about  3G  for  voice  – Matches  exisMng  smartphone  capabiliMes  –  4G  voice  (VoLTE)  not  yet  mainstream  –  RF  isolaMon  in-‐building  reduces  concerns  about  interference  with  macrocells

•  4G/LTE  products  commercially  available  – Widely  deployed  in  South  Korea

•  MulM-‐mode  3G/LTE  product  by  2H  2014  – Needs  next  generaMon  of  silicon  chipsets  –  Ideally  fits  within  Power  over  Ethernet  limits

MulM-‐Operator

•  Useful  for  BYOD,  COPE;  Important  for  venues  •  Different  ways  to  achieve  this  – MulMple  Small  Cells,  one  per  network  operator  – MulM-‐band  MulM-‐Operator  Small  Cells  (e.g.  MOCN)  – NaMonal  Roaming  –  3rd  party  wholesale  using  own  spectrum  (e.g.  BT)

•  3G  vs  4G  •  Issues  with  some  older  3G  smartphones,  but  workarounds  exist

BYOD  =  Bring  Your  Own  Device  COPE  =  Corporate  Owned/Personally  Enabled  MOCN  =  Mul?ple  Operator  Core  Network

Summary  •  Enterprise  includes  all  non-‐residenMal  in-‐building  •  Predominantly  3G  for  voice  today  •  Larger  buildings  likely  to  have  local  controller  •  Takeup  could  be  accelerated  by  –  Simple  design  and  installaMon  – MulM-‐operator  support  – Outsourcing
