I am an art historian who’s taken up painting in my second
childhood. Although I received my undergraduate degree in
visual arts at the College of William and Mary (B.A., 1963), I went
on to do graduate study in art history at New York University and
the University of California at Berkeley (Ph.D., 1979). I taught in the
Department of History in Art at the University of Victoria from 1981
until 1999 when I took early retirement. Upon retirement, I returned
my roots and began painting again after a hiatus of many decades.
I’m a member of a group of women painters who meet once a
month to discuss their work in the studio of well-known local artist
Phyllis Serota. I have shown my work at Sooke Fine Arts as well as
in group exhibitions at the Emily Carr House, the McPherson
Library Gallery, the Maltwood Museum, the Martin Batchelor
Gallery, the Red Gallery, and the CACGV Gallery at Cedar Hill
Recreation Centre. In 2012, I had a one-person show, by invitation,
at the Abkhazi Garden tearoom, where I displayed a series of large
acrylics depicting the garden. I have recently begun to work in a
more abstract style. My paintings are included in private
collections in Canada, the United States, England, Ireland, Italy,
Germany and Korea.
