Executive Summary
The Internet of Things charges ahead with billions of wireless sensors in use worldwide and annual
shipments of wireless sensor network (WSN) chipsets on track to reach 1 billion within the next two
years. While this market is maturing, demand is accelerating for standards-based WSN components
and IoT development platforms.
Compared with 14 years ago when ON World published our first report on WSN, wireless component
costs are a fraction of what they used to be, cloud developer platforms are proliferating, open
source software initiatives are growing and thousands of WSN products are available from multiple
channels.
As adoption for IoT solutions becomes more widespread, three distinct landscapes are forming:
Short range, fixed wireless sensor networks
Short range, mobile sensing
Long range wireless sensing and tracking
By 2021, annual shipments of WSN chipsets will reach 2.5 billion. Short range technologies such as
802.15.4, Bluetooth and WiFi will make up the largest portion but long range technologies such as
SigFox, LoRa, Weightless-P and Narrowband-IoT will increase faster.

Short Range Wireless Sensor Network Trends
Competition is intensifying for the top three short range WSN technologies: 802.15.4, WiFi and
Bluetooth. IEEE 802.15.4 continues to lead for short range wireless sensor networks with the
largest market share for fixed WSN markets such as smart homes, buildings, metering and smart
cities. The diversity of 802.15.4 wireless mesh standards continues including ZigBee PRO, Thread,
WirelessHART, ISA100.11a, Wi-SUN and JupiterMesh but some of these are converging through
industry group collaborations. A few of these alliances include Thread Group/ZigBee Alliance,
Thread Group/Connected Lighting Alliance as well as ZigBee/EnOcean Alliance. However, both the
Wi-SUN and ZigBee alliances have each launched separate wireless mesh specifications for utility
networks and smart cities that use IEEE 802.15.4g/e, IPv6/LoWPWAN, UDP/TCP, RPL and CoAP.
Bluetooth and WiFi are steadily increasing their share of the IoT market in consumer, commercial
and industrial markets. Bluetooth Smart unit shipments for WSN markets increased 436% over the
past two years and it is on track to have the largest share of all short range WSN markets within the
next few years. While the majority of this growth will be for mobile sensing markets such as
smartwatches as well as health and fitness trackers, Bluetooth’s market share for fixed WSN
markets such as smart homes, buildings and industrial applications will increase by over 50% per
annum over the next five years. WiFi continues to expand its IoT market share with a growing
number of WiFi solutions in industrial, logistics and smart city markets. Earlier this year, the WiFi
Alliance announced HaLow, a sub 1GHz wireless IoT specification based on IEEE 802.11ah that
promises low power, relatively long range IP-addressable wireless sensing and tracking
applications.
Low Power Wide Area Networks
LPWANs are poised to be one of the most disruptive forces for the Internet of Things. LPWAN
technologies use ultra-low power radios that communicate over several miles in large scale
networks (private and public) and nearly unlimited applications. By pushing the network
complexity to the cloud, LPWAN technologies are already drawing a large number of developers
and dozens of network operators worldwide.
Over the past few years, adoption of Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technologies has
accelerated with nation-wide networks being rolled out worldwide and intensifying standards
efforts are underway by the LoRa Alliance, ETSI, Weightless SIG and 3GPP.
ON World’s recently completed survey with IoT professionals found that three quarters are aware
of LPWAN technologies and 60% are planning on developing LPWAN products/services. Two in five
LPWAN developers are targeting primarily new applications that cannot be done with existing
technologies.
WSN Markets Executive summary

The majority of the respondents believe that LPWAN technologies will have a significant impact on
most IoT markets. They believe LPWANs will have the biggest impact on smart buildings, logistics,
oil and gas, agriculture, smart grid and smart cities.

Threats & Opportunities
Illustrating a maturing market and intensifying competition, there have been numerous acquisitions
and mergers for WSN component suppliers over the past 18 months. A few of these include
GreenPeak/Qorvo, Atmel/Microchip, NXP/Freescale, Qualcomm/CSR, RadioPulse/IXYS, IDT/ZMD
and Silicon Labs/Telegesis. During this period, WSN chipset prices have dropped significantly,
benefiting manufacturers and software developers. Disruptive new entrants are emerging such as
Espressif with < $5 drop-in WiFi modules as well as Bluetooth and combination WiFi+Bluetooth
chipsets and modules.
Thousands of IoT developers are benefiting from expanding IoT cloud platforms by Amazon, IBM,
Google and Microsoft as well as growing open source initiatives such as the AllSeen Alliance, Open
Connectivity Foundation, mozaiq operations as well as IBM’s open implementation of LoRaWAN and
Nest’s OpenThread. Venture capital funds have been pouring into IoT companies especially those
focused on IoT connectivity, rapid product development, and/or system integration such as
Actility, Arrayent, Ayla Networks, Electric Imp, Greenwave Systems, Helium, IFTTT, Intent
Technologies, OrbiWise, relayr and Smart Things (Samsung). The IoT cloud platform providers that
we cover in this report have together raised well over $1 billion in venture funding to date.
