Sermon Outline “Heroes are... Inspiring”

Simon – “3 strikes!” The “wrong” guy, doing the “wrong” thing, with the “wrong” people Magic – using charm and enchantment to deceive Philip – converts and baptizes the Samaritans Even Simon!! Peter – lays hands on them and conveys the Holy Spirit Simon wants the same power that Peter has Peter says “No!” Simon’s “3 strikes” of misunderstanding 1) He demanded it (I’m entitled to it) 2) He thought money could buy it (I’m entitled because of my money) 3) He was selfish (privilege over responsibility) Peter as Hero 1) Resisted temptation 2) Protected the integrity of the office of Apostle 3) Courage to go against the status quo 4) Kept Simon in relationship Heroes: Inspire us to be better versions of ourselves Encourage us to want to be like them Notes: _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________

Acts 8:18-24 (NRSV) 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me also this power so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain God’s gift with money! 21 You have no part or share in this, for your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent therefore of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, the intent of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and the chains of wickedness.” 24 Simon answered, “Pray for me to the Lord, that nothing of what you[a] have said may happen to me.”
