Visual Communication Design problem statementPart 1 - Successful Signature
A n a l y s i s o f a S u c c e s s f u l S i g n a t u r eAn example of a successful signature is from LG Electronics. This signature is
internationally known and the company behind it has created a simple logo with great
impact for their consumers. The design of a signature should reflect a company’s vision
and purpose. Their logo depicts their exact vision and purpose: a good life for their
consumers. The visual mark incorporates the letters “L” and “G” to creatively illustrate a
smiling face (portraying a happy consumer and friendliness). This visual mark shows LG’s
aim for happy customers making “life good.”
The visual mark’s main red color is a bold color which represents LG’s strong
commitment to the happiness of their customers. Although the mark’s main color is
red, it can be reproduced in other colors: gold, black, and grey only. The colors can only
be reproduced “under certain circumstances” and “the reproduction of LG colors must
be carefully monitored to achieve the highest fidelity to the original” according to the
LG company. Using other colors could create a different interpretation of the company’s
signature, therefore has strict rules when reproducing the logo.
The signature has exact ratio for the sizes and placement of the visual mark and
LG’s name. These proportions never change because the careful placement of the visual
mark and name brings balance overall to the signature. This creates a clean and simple
signature that is visually appealing."
LG Electronics has created a successful signature that has been used since 1995. It is
widely known and many consumers are still intrigued with the meaning of LG’s visual
mark. With a clear cut design and simplicity, it is easy to identify the LG name and its
meaning: life’s good.

Visual Communication Design problem statementPart 2 - Unsuccessful Signature
A n a l y s i s o f a n U n s u c c e s s f u l S i g n a t u r eLooking at this signature, it is difficult to even label this as a “signature” because
one cannot tell which part of it is actually the visual mark. There is so much going
on with this signature and it lacks quality. It looks like the images are just clipart
pulled up in Microsoft Word and placed with the restaurant name. The signature
itself does not represent the restaurant’s purpose: great food and drinks.
The only positive outcome of this signature is probably the capital letter T in
Thai Talay. The choice in this font is similar to the Thai language, representing
authenticity, but there is no flow between the letters after the first capital T’s in Thai
Talay. The main thing that could improve the signature significantly is more simplicity.
Thai Talay wants their customers to get away from the busy life and enjoy the
authentic Thai cuisine. Changing the name to a more simple font will represent a
clear vision of the restaurant name, allowing customers to remember Thai Talay as a
great place to dine. Also a visual mark needs to be created for the restaurant. Like
McDonald’s golden arches, Thai Talay could use a visual mark that customers will
always remember. The visual mark should also represent the authenticity of Thai
food with an organic feel.
Seeing that Thai Talay offers sushi and wine, one can assume it is a fine dining
restaurant set out to please their customers in a relaxing environment. When
looking at the image, nothing relaxing or inviting comes to mind. If a restaurant takes
no effort in their design of a signature, a customer may consider that will be the
same for the products. The signature needs to illustrate the restaurant’s intentions
more effectively.
Overall the signature lacks everything needed for a successful design. With the
changes mentioned above, the signature can potentially lure in more customers. A
more well designed signature will depict the restaurant in a better light. This will also
represent the restaurant’s vision of high quality foods and drinks. With strong design
can come strong success for Thai Talay.

An up and coming influential graphic designer that has dispersed from Australia all the way to
the United States is Rob Morris aka DIGITALMash. His site (www.digitalmash.com) contains his
portfolio in an online format and journal entries. Within the journal are often posts with advice on
portfolio building and simple quick tutorials. Those who aspire to become designers can take a look
at Rob’s entries and can even ask questions directly to Rob. He has great journal entries that are
great resources for other designers to read and learn.
Also with today’s society, online media is very important. Social networking is constantly growing
in the Internet world and artists can show their work through clean design with a new innovative
site Flavors.me. Rob is now working with the site as the product designer. The site allows anyone to
create a well-designed webpage. It integrates the use of existing content from sites like Facebook,
Flickr, and Twitter to create a functional webpage. According to nextlevelideas.com, Flavors.me is “the
antithesis of MySpace, its strict but stylish templates ensure a consistent look and feel.”
As part of the team that created Flavors.me, Rob has brought together a community of graphic
designers, photographers, musicians, and others alike. The community has a visually stimulating appeal
that will be great for social networking. I myself was able to create a well designed webpage in less
than one hour: http://flavors.me/sophiado. I hope to use this great online tool to showcase my past
and future works, and all thanks goes to Rob who introduced Flavors.me via Twitter to his 3,921
followers.
A C a r e e r i n D e s i g nI find myself analyzing colors, fonts, and designs with anything visual on a daily basis. One thing I
do not take for granted is the work it takes to design any aesthetic product from billboards to
brochures. I have learned that I have a passion for graphics. A career in Visual Communications
Design is important to me because it fulfills something I have passion for. It took some time for me
to learn what I truly loved doing, but graphic design has been something I have enjoyed since I was
in middle school. Before starting college, I honestly never thought much about design. Growing up as
a first generation college student, I always felt obligated to major in something health related or
engineering but I soon learned I should study something for myself.
I had to ask myself the cliché question, “What do you see yourself doing in ten years?” I first
answered the question with a wrong approach by choosing a career that would make money. I
realized I needed to do something I love and enjoy. "Don't settle. Life's too short and the work day
is too long to not enjoy what you're doing." This statement by graphic designer Rob Morris left me
with a clear view of what I wanted to see myself doing in ten years: a graphic designer.
The Visual Communication Design major will benefit me. I can work with a medium that
fascinates me and a design background will only allow me to learn and sharpen my skills. My
knowledge for graphic design now has all been self-taught through online tutorials but can expand
to a greater extent with in-class learning. With the design major, I will have a more interactive
learning experience working with my professors and peers. More importantly, a design major will
allow me to build a career as a graphic designer, a career that I can find myself enjoying.
