    The Facts!

99.9% of enterprises in the UK are SMEs 4.8 millions businesses in the UK in 2008 3.5 millions businesses are solo proprietors (no employees)

In London 630,000 businesses are solo preneurs

Srce: The Department for Business Innovation and Skills http://stats.bis.gov.uk/ed/sme

Is it a choice by default or an informed one? How do you take your solo business into a bigger one if you wish so?

Your most important job as an entrepreneurial leader is not to find new opportunities or to identify the criticalcompetitive insights.

Your task is to create an organization thatdoes these things for you as a matter of course.

You will have succeeded when everyone in the organization takes it for granted thatbusiness success is about a continual searchfor new opportunities and a continual lettinggo of less productive activities.

By Rita Gunther McGrath, Ian MacMillan, The Most Important Job: Entrepreneurial Leadership

    Entrepreneurial Leadership

    Stage 1 : The beginnings

Most business go through this stage regardless their activities

Entrepreneurs dislike bureaucracy and politics of past employed life

    Want to keep things simple

Enterprise & Entrepreneur = one & only entity

Problem: lack of time, skills, energy

End up isolated and give up!

Stage 2 : Evolve or Not?

Consider lifestyle & vision Go or No go? If you have a big vision you cannot do it alone! You need to learn the rules of the game : learning to become a great Leader

Need to become or hire a competent Manager => 2 separate roles now Manager role: Managing & taking decisionsneeded for the smooth running

Founder role: Controlling what has been done Bringing new people in a biz can be risky and uneasy

But can be done when you know what you want

3 key characteristics of the Entrepreneurial Leader

Steinberg, grocery stores founded in 1917 by Sam Steinberg. Successful until 1933 when one store was loosing $125/week Sam actions

Friday: close the door, transformed the shop into a self-service, changed the name from Steinbergs Service Storeinto Wholesale Groceteria, 15-20 % reduction, printed flyers & distributed them Monday: open the door of the new store.

Huge success then transformed other stores into self-services too.

In 1960 self service shops was booming but Sam Steinberg was far ahead of the competition.
