Entry Task: Dec 1 Monday QUESTION: Provide the Lewis Dot structure AND what is the VSEPR shape for OCl 5 You have 5 minutes!! Agenda: Collect VSEPR part 1 AND part 2 IMF notes and get started on IMF ws HW: IMF ws Quiz on Lewis Dot next Clear off Desks! Clear off Desks! Have out: Periodic Table IMF notes writing utensil IMF notes What does a magnet and the Earth have in common? Both have poles- a positive/negative ends What happens a bunch of magnet are near each other? The + end is attracted to the end. They will clump up. In keeping with poles, which of these molecules have poles? What does this have to do with molecules? They too have poles. A lopsidedness in electron- lone pairs!! ++ -- Is water polar? Look at Lewis Dot.- remember VSEPR ++ -- H H O Yes, because molecules have poles Ionic compounds like NaCl dissolve in water. Why! ++ -- H H O NaCl Na + + Cl - Ionic compounds are by nature +/- and waters polarity will rip the compound apart Molecules (share electrons), which of the following is polar? Nonpolar Polar Nonpolar Polar Nonpolar Nonpolar substances occur when electrons are shared evenly like monoatomic, diatomic molecules and symmetrical molecules. Nonpolar The attraction between these molecules are very weak. Nonpolar Dispersion attractions are attractions caused by the shifting of electrons within a molecule that affects neighboring molecules. Polar substances occur when electrons are NOT shared evenly like asymmetrical molecules with lone pairs. Polar ++ -- ++ -- ++ -- Attractions between these molecules are stronger- like magnets ++ -- Dipole-Dipole are attractions caused by the unequal sharing within a molecule that affects neighboring molecules. STRONGEST attraction between molecule is hydrogen bonding ++ -- Hydrogen Bonding are stronger dipole-dipole attraction between Hydrogen and neighboring molecules having Fluorine, Oxygen, and Nitrogen on them. Ionic Bonding Transfers ve- +/- Metal/nonmetal Covalent Bonding Share ve- Neutral nonmetals Hydrogen bonding H ---- to F, O, N Dipole-Dipole Asymmetrical covalent bonding Dispersion Symmetrical covalent bonding Polar- having poles Non Polar no poles Intramolecular Forces Intermolecular Forces HW: Finish IMF ws and be ready for Quiz on Lewis Dot
