• Extract solar energy stored in the ground
• High temperature stability makes the ground a good heat source
• 1 metre deep: 5-17°C depending on the time of year
• > 6 metres deep: 8-12°C depending on the time of year
• Heat extraction rates vary with soil type:

Ground source heat pumpCO2 savings from heat pumps
• Ground source provides > 25% reduction in CO2 emissions when compared with gas central heating
• Ground source heat should be a fundamental part of energy-efficient construction, but the high capital outlay required for the ground collectors has resulted in a slow uptake in the UK market
• The marginal cost of adapting the foundations of a building (which are always required), by utilising screw piles as ground collectors as well as foundations, is small.

ecoLOGIC fundingThe future of offsite housing and mixed-use developments
The district heating concept is especially appropriate for using renewable energy in mixed-use developments. Surplus heat and electrical power generated by one type of building can be redistributed to others with different demands and timings, offering substantial efficiency gains. The ecoLOGIC funding mechanism not only allows for zero carbon developments to be cost-neutral when compared with less-efficient more traditional forms of construction, it can actually make it more cost-effective.This is because the Thermo Screw Pile™ system is paid for out of the renewables fund, which means there is little or no foundation cost to come out of the development fund.
