Week 1: Conceptual Frameworks in Environmental Anthropology (15items)The history of anthropological theorizing on human-environment relations is long andcontentious. Debates parallel general anthropological trends in theory as well as those inbiology and environmental sciences. This first week we will lay the foundation for themodule by looking at the way the goals and methods have been framed inecological/environmental anthropology. In particular, we want to begin to understand the

Week 2: Culture, Social Organization and Ecology: Early Approaches (16items)This week we review early theories of human-environment relations including 18th centuryenvironmental determinism, Darwin’s theory of human adaptation, Malthus and limitingfactors, and Boas and Historical Possibilism. Julian Steward’s method and theory of culturalecology broke with determinism and possibilism in search of a more middle-level theory ofresource utilization, focusing on comparison to test the causal relationships between socialstructure and subsistence practices. The CE approach analyzes the relationship betweenenvironmental resources, subsistence technology, and the behaviour needed to usetechnology to exploit resources. See the article by *Lett on culture if you are unfamiliarwith its use in anthropology, though a good review for all.

Week 3: Systems Theories: Ecological Anthropology (18 items)Dissatisfaction with the cultural ecology approach and the growing influence of the scienceof Ecology led many anthropologists to adopt an ecosystems approach tohuman-environment relations. By studying human populations as part of ecosystems, attention could be paid to all forms of adaptability-physiological, cultural, behavioral andeconomic. The goal was not to explain culture, but to understand the total humanecological relationship. The research strategy is to study a wide range of human responsesto environmental problems, to social constraints, and to past solutions to environmentalproblems using systems analysis techniques. Systems theory is a perspective that bears agreat deal of similarity to anthropological holism. In response, critics have suggested thatEco Anthro overlooks individual decision-making, and they favor actor-based models thatmake no assumptions about holism or systematic relationships.

Week 4: Historical Ecology; Nature-Culture and Wilderness (22 items)How do human-environment interactions and social-ecological systems change? Do theyco-evolve? Julian Steward and today's historical ecologists view ecological constraintswithin a historical perspective. They argue that the processes by which humans transformtheir environments are inherently historical. Whereas Steward stressed the role ofadaptation to specific ecosystems in shaping cultural heritages, today's HE focus on theactive role played by social actors and communities in responding to environmental andhistorical factors, and shaping their environment to meet cultural, economic and politicalneeds, what evolutionary biologists refer to as niche construction. This subject overlapswith a huge literature in Environmental History (see William Cronon) and Landscape

Week 5: Political Ecology and Environmental Degradation:Deforestation (44 items) Political ecology has become an umbrella term for a variety of approaches in severaldisciplines, that focus on political aspects of human-environment relationships. Initiallythough, it can be seen as an outgrowth of political economy approaches (a la Marx),whereby capital and the state are central in the making (and degrading) of landscapes andenvironments. In class divided societies, experiences of Nature are mediated through“conventions of property”, which regulate access to resources and differentiate theenvironment based on those rules. Thus international capitalism and poverty are thecontexts for understanding degraded soils. Deforestation is not primarily caused bypoverty, ignorance, over-population or underdevelopment, but rather by structuralinequalities, such as land concentration, land speculation and landlessness. Politicalecologists insist that natural resources are best managed by local people, and thatsustainable development programmes should make use of traditional systems of resourcemanagement.

Week 7: Representations of Nature: Cosmovisions (19 items)Rappaport distinguished operational from cognized environments, and this led to thedistinction between etic and emic approaches. This week we examine the “emic”, thecognitive models that people use to understand and represent their environments, such asdefinitions of Nature. These might be called idealist or symbolic or constructivistapproaches to the environment; and the basis of “spiritual ecology” They are also implicitcritiques of biological approaches, and more generally nomothetic scientific approaches. They are relativist as well, suggesting, in the extreme, that each worldview or cosmovision

Today, most participatory research, or rights based approaches, takes as a given that one must uncover, respect and work with local perceptions andvalues, norms, beliefs in all development, aid and conservation programmes.

Throughout the world, new social movements haveconstituted themselves around the environmental debate. Environmental issues havebeen taken out of natural sciences and put to the forefront of the political agenda.Anthropologists have contributed to the study of environmentalism by documenting theways in which different social actors perceive and interpret 'green issues'. Week 4 Human behavioural Ecology and Foraging (13 items)A new strand of ecological anthropology began developing in the 1980s, in the wake of thesociobiology (and behavioural ecology) theory speared headed by Dawkins, Wilson, Krebsand other neo-darwinists, that sought to use optimal foraging models from animalbehaviour to describe and explain human subsistence, reproductive, and social behaviour. The premise was that selection, acting on individuals (not groups) would lead to finelyadapted and optimal practices that maximized benefits per cost (usually measured interms of calories per unit effort). If this didn’t occur, then there was something interestinggoing on (such as the influence of cultural values and social norms). Despite being roundlycriticised for being reductionist and overly deterministic, human behavioural ecologyremains an important approach that is inline with other evolutionary approaches inarchaeology, primatology, psychology, linguistics and ecology.
