Kamstrup is a world-leading manufacturer of energy and water meters and provider of solutions for energy and water metering.

Our meters measure heat, cooling, water, and electricity. We also develop automated solutions for managing energy and water meters, collecting meter readings and analysis. For some customers we look after the entire process of installing and maintaining energy and water meters, and providing technical support.

Our products are known for their reliability and high quality. Our quality, environmental and IT certifications speak volumes about the service we deliver.

We have more than 40 years of experience in collaborating with utility companies of all sizes. So far we are represented in 65 countries worldwide by Kamstrup companies and sales offices, and by our distributors.

Climate, fossil fuels, smart energy and water metersClimate change and the long-term availability of fossil fuels are subjects of worldwide concern. Both issues are driving the development of more efficient energy systems, including distributed local power supply and storage, and smart grids for electricity distribution. Smart energy and water meters are a vital part of this development.

New metering applications include charging stations for electric vehicles, metering of local solar power production, district cooling consumption and many more. As utility meters become more advanced they will increasingly connect to home automation and grid control systems, as well as being read remotely. These and other market developments will call for new solutions from Kamstrup, and we will do our best to deliver.

Knowing–Understanding–SavingTo save energy and water you need to understand how you are consuming it, and that is only possible if you have appropriate meters installed. This is the essence of Kamstrup’s smart energy and water meters.

Data from the meters keeps our customers informed about how much energy and water they consume over different periods and across different appliances. For instance, information from all of a household’s utility meters – heat, water and electricity – can be shown on a single display. By showing energy and water consumption clearly and accurately, our products encourage end-users to protect the environment by managing their use of resources.

ValuesFor over 60 years we have led our industry through breakthrough innovation and product development. We are committed to creating more intelligent and sustainable solutions for the benefit of nature and people. We are also committed to creating a working environment that supports and develops our people. Where they are encouraged to thrive and challenge our own standards and expectations to deliver even higher value for our customers. We never settle for second best and we expect our people to always seek better ways to do what they do.

Our values of inspire, lead and deliver define the very essence of what makes us unique and ensure that we always exceed expectations. We inspire through deep customer understanding, superior quality and breakthrough innovation. We lead by being committed to creating a brighter water and energy future, always turning vision into action. And we deliver on our promises, always measuring our success by the progress we create for others. We believe this is the way to develop our company and create long-term partnerships.

1. Introduction

1.1 PurposeThis report is a look back at 2015, in order to describe the environmental performance of Kamstrup’s environmentally certified locations.

The data and information in the report is collected in order to map, evaluate and prioritise Kamstrup’s environmental impact, thus presenting a picture of Kamstrup’s current relationship to the environment.

1.2 Environmental management systemKamstrup maintains an environmental management system in accordance with the standard ISO 14001.

The system is certified by DNV (former DS Certification). The system at Kamstrup’s headquarters in Stilling, Denmark became certified in 1997.

Fischer-Kamstrup in Randers, and the following foreign Kamstrup locations are also covered by the certification:

• Norway

• Sweden

• Finland

• Germany

• Switzerland

• Netherlands

We are in the process of implementing ISO 14001:2015 – starting with risk management.

The total implementation is planned to be finished in 2017.

1.3 Risk ManagementThe following statement has been added in Kamstrup’s Quality Manual:

Kamstrup manages risks with possible business-related consequences. This is accomplished through maintaining a risk overview, related to the company’s processes. Decisions regarding accepting, or reducing risks are taken at the appropriate organizational level.

1.4 ISO 50001We have made an agreement with DNV GL to include paragraph 4.4.3 from ISO 50001 (Energy review) in the certifications for Stilling, Randers and Karlskrona. This will take place along with the re-certification in the summer of 2016.

The main certification scope is:Development, production, sales and operation of equipment and systems for measuring, reading and the administration of energy and water consumption.

Environmental policy is documented in Quality Manual 5509-010, and environmental targets are documented in Environmental Action Programme 5509-263 supported by an action plan for each target.

The environmental management system covers the environmental impacts shown in this figure:

2.2 ProcessesOur production processes are of such a kind, that there is no special risk regarding environmental impact from unforeseen incidents.

There has never been a fire, explosion or handling accident with an environmental impact.

Oil, chemical waste and flammable liquids are stored in special safe rooms and lockers.

Environmental assessment and approval of processesPrior to implementing new or changed processes (applies to mass production), the person responsible for the process must make a documented assessment of the process, and submit it to the Environmental Coordinator for approval.

The assessment only applies to processes with complete costs of more than DKK 20,000 and do not include:

• Emissions to air

• Waste water

• Dangerous waste

• External noise

The assessment is done on a standard form, and may be conducted in cooperation with the Environmental Coordinator.

Production technology

Subject Requirement/recommendation

Process choice If there is a choice between processes of the same quality, the process with the smallest environmental impact must be chosen, if it is technically/economically possible.

Environmental legislation General legislation and guides can be found in the document List of Environmental Legislation

Energy consumption There is no legislation on this parameter, but low consumption should be preferred.

Water consumption There is no legislation on this parameter, but low consumption should be preferred.

Waste water The requirements in Kamstrup’s waste water permit must be observed. The specified amounts and types of waste water must not be exceeded. If this is not possible the environmental coordinator shall become involved, in order to inform the local waste water authorities. Before the process can be accepted, a written authorization from the authorities must be in place.

2.3 Emergency preparednessWe maintain a procedure for emergency preparedness and response. The purpose of the procedure is to:

• identify potential emergency situations and potential accidents that can have an impact on the environment

• describe how to respond to emergency situations and accidents

• prevent or reduce harmful environmental impacts

• ensure periodical tests of the described emergency preparedness and response procedure

• ensure the periodical tests are documented

The most relevant emergency situation is fire. Therefore, larger stocks of lithium batteries are identified by the following sign:

REMOVE IN CASE OF FIRE

Mandatory energy reviewAll large companies were required, before the end of 2015, to conduct a mandatory energy review – this also applies to all large Danish companies. In Denmark, this requirement is implemented by BEK no. 1212 25/11/2014. The energy review was performed by ALECTIA in cooperation with Kemp & Lauritzen.

The energy review comprises of:

• Analysis of energy consumption based on measurements

• Based on energy consumption analysis, identifying significant areas of energy consumption and the magnitude of the consumption

• Identification, prioritisation and documentation of possibilities for improvements of energy performance, including; potential energy sources, use of sustainable and alternative energy sources

Waste data are taken from reports from our waste receivers.

The amount of waste for recycling in 2015 increased by 24,5% compared with 2014.

This is due to an enhanced focus on waste fractions that can be recycled.

The waste that goes to incineration is being handled at “Reno Syd”, an incineration plant that uses the heat to generate electricity and district heating.

Electronic wasteEarly in 2015, we made an agreement with Stena Technoworld regarding the collection and recycling of all our electronic waste.

The agreement deals with:

• Meters

• Circuit boards

• Cables

• Computer equipment

Example of recycling - Randers:

Type of waste Amount (ton)

Metal 198

To incineration 0,5

Cardboard and paper 1,3

Plastic 0,4

Foreign locations:The amount of waste is not recorded, except for Karlskrona in Sweden.

Types of waste:

• Cardboard

• Paper

• Household waste

• Electronic waste (mostly worn out office equipment)

• Batteries (mostly regular batteries – but also small amounts of lithium batteries)

Related to system projects where old meters are substituted by new, there are two types of waste:• Worn out meters of various makes

• Packing materials from the new Kamstrup meters

Metals New materials

Residue Deposit

Acid New materials

Organic Material Burning Heat

Circuit board with components

Applicable environmental legislation regarding all the locations can be seen in list 5509-236.

The environmental system contains the requirement of annual evaluations of compliance with the legislation.

4.1 Local authorities

Waste water permitIn the summer of 2015 the local environmental authorities in Skanderborg issued a new waste water permit to Kamstrup in Stilling.

The permit required an initial analysis of the content of various substances:

• Water in the test benches

• Water led into the sewer system

All analysis results were accepted by the authorities.

Environmental reviewIn late 2015 the local environmental authorities performed an environmental review at Kamstrup in Stilling.

The review did not reveal any substantial environmental issues.

4.2 RoHs directiveRoHs II (Reduction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances) EU directive 2011/65/EU regarding limiting the use of certain hazardous substances in electric and electronic products. For example lead in soldering materials, cadmium in metal alloys plus certain flame retardants in plastic materials.

As of 2014, all Kamstrup products were without lead and the other substances that the directive deals with.

Based on the parts list (bill of material) it is ensured that none of the components and materials contain the substances mentioned in RoHS II in higher concentrations than specified in the directive:

• Lead (0,1 %)

• Mercury (0,1 %)

• Cadmium (0,01 %)

• Hexavalent chromium (0,1 %)

• Polybrometed biphenyls (PBB) (0,1 %)

• Polybrometed diphenylethers (PBDE) (0,1 %)

Unless the directive contains an exemption.

New substances restricted by RoHSCommission Delegated Directive (EU) 2015/863 of 31 March 2015 amending Annex II to Directive 2011/65/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards the list of restricted substances.

Amends four new substances (found in plastic materials) for restrictions:

• Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) (0,1%)

• Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) (0,1%)

• Butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) (0,1%)

• Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) (0,1%)

• Diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) (0,1%)

The restrictions of the new substances apply to Kamstrup as of 22 July 2021.

Kamstrup will investigate if any of the substances are present in the plastics used in its products, and ensure that if so, the use of such plastics is discontinued.

4. Awareness of relevant legislation and ensuring compliance

4.3 WEEE directiveWEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) EU directive 2002/96/EF regarding producer responsibility for disposal of waste from electric and electronic products).

Based on guidelines from the Danish Environmental Agency and “Frequently Asked Questions on RoHs & WEEE” issued by the EU, we have evaluated that Kamstrup’s meter products, in general, are not within the scope of WEEE (see appendix 3). But products like the ”Wireless M-Bus” module, for sale in retail shops, is within the scope of WEEE. Therefore, Kamstrup holds a registration at the Danish body DPA-system, with annual reporting and payment of a minor fee based on total weight of sold modules.

4.4 REACH regulationRegulation 1907/2006 on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH)

Some customers require documentation regarding Kamstrup’s compliance with the regulation.

Therefore, a standard statement has been written. The statement can be delivered to customers and interested parties upon request

The statement says:

Kamstrup A/S hereby declares compliance with the applicable requirements of the REACH Regulation.

Kamstrup A/S does not import substances, preparations or articles covered by the REACH Regulation.

Kamstrup A/S products do not contain substances from the “Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern”.

In order to preserve the supply chain, Kamstrup A/S makes sure that all suppliers of goods covered by REACH and used for production, or otherwise contained in Kamstrup A/S products, are taking the proper measures to maintain the applicable registrations.

The Candidate List is a dynamic document. The official, and updated list can be seen on ECHA’s (European Chemicals Agency) homepage.

Internally in Kamstrup we compare the content of our chemical data base with the candidate list twice per year. New chemicals are also compared with the candidate list before implementation.

4.5 Energy reviewAll large companies were required, before the end of 2015, to make a mandatory energy review – this also applies to all large Danish companies. In Denmark, this requirement is implemented by BEK nr. 1212 25/11/2014. The Energy review was performed by ALECTIA in cooperation with Kemp & Lauritzen.

Energy review comprises:

• Analysis of energy consumption based on measurements

• Based on energy consumption analysis, identifying significant areas of energy consumption and the magnitude of the consumption.

• Identification, prioritisation and documentation of possibilities for improvements of energy performance, including; potential energy sources, use of sustainable and alternative energy sources.
