CYNET’s Ambition : { For CYNET this policy can be a key tool to demonstrate its environmental priorities to both the higher education community as well as the general and international society. CYNET believes having an environmental policy is an important step towards a truly sustainable organization }

Introduction

According to Eco – Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), “An environmental policy is top management’s declaration of its targets for improving environmental performance. It is also a key tool for telling employees, customers, environmental interest groups, etc. what the organisation’s environmental priorities are. The organisation must then act according to these principles.” The following points are essential to a good environmental policy:

Ø  It is clearly and concisely written. Ø  It is credible and realistic, and does not make promises the organisation cannot

implement. Ø  It motivates – the employees are pleased, not surprised or alarmed by its

statements and aims. Ø  It addresses top priorities for being an efficient environmental performer. Ø  It gives a clear direction and can be achieved through objectives and targets.

According to GEANT Green Team Environmental Sustainability Policy template, an NREN’s Environmental Sustainability Policy should consist of:

CYNET Environmental Sustainability Policy

Ø  Motivation CYNET is called to continuously enrich and update the range of its services with newly developed and advanced services and equipment using high speeds of networking. Utilizing both its existing infrastructure as well as its ideal position in the research and academic community, the provision of these services can be strengthened even more through new network services and technologies, methods and scientific advancements, that will enhance the environmental sustainability. CYNET recognizes that the world’s energy resources are limited and that its equipment is having an impact on the environment and can be improved. Therefore, appreciates its responsibility for the harmful effects on the environment and is committed to become more energy efficient and reduce its Green House Gas impact on the environment and set targets for continuous improvement.

Ø  Statements

•  Implement an effective and preventive environmental protection plan through constant updating, dissemination and sharing of information among CYNET employees and members on environmental matters and apply a training program for them to raise awareness of environmental issues •  Support the implementation of specific actions by CYNET employees and its members to enhance environmental awareness. (such as the need to perform Green House gas Audits, analyze the results and identify the areas for improvement as well as Minimize the amount of waste by recycling everything possible and by re – using equipment when possible) •  Reduce the consumption of energy and increase energy conservation and energy efficiency •  Promote the use of appropriate ICT services as an environmentally positive alternative and participate in research activities to explore new innovations in Green ICT.

CYNET seeks to reduce the Organization’s impact on the environment. Thereby, it now commits to investigate better ways to towards adopting “Green thinking” as a part of the organization culture

!   Create an Environmental Day at CYNET in order to enhance environmental awareness. !   Participate in Environmental Awareness events organised by CYNET members !   Disseminating to members the results , actions and the tests cases examined with in the NA3-T3 activity of the GN3plus project !   Implement a training program for CYNET employees and members to raise awareness of environmental issues through

Information dissemination n and via attending training activities with significant environmental effects such as workshops, conferences, webinars and scientific articles.

!   CYNET in the near future may participate in at least one webinar of EU and GEANT and in the longer term can instigate the study of some scientific articles

A majority of the aforementioned actions will be performed as a part of CYNET’s task called “Presentation of Energy Efficiency tactics to CYNET members” which CYNET is committed to present under the scope of NA3-T3 activity “The Greening of Services” of the GN3plus project.

!  CYNET will establish the energy awareness to its employees in the use of sustainable greening practices, and encourage them to act as follows : •  Use public transportation for their daily commute •  Avoid the use of postal services. •  If print is necessary, then both sides of the paper can be used to help reduce paper consumption •  Reuse the discarded paper to print on the back side of the paper and making use of them for notes •  Reduce paper use can decrease the environmental footprint by using any software •  Using of teleconferencing software we can reduce the emission of greenhouse gases due to travelling •  Purchase products with a lower environmental impact

!  CYNET encourage and assist its members to create their own Environmental Sustainability Policy !  Perform CYNET’s Green House Gas Audit for 2014, analyze the results of the Audit and identify the areas for

improvement for CYNET. •  Encourage and assist CYNET members to perform their own Green House Gas Audits for 2014 using the

eCO2meter tool !  Minimize the amount of waste by recycling everything possible and by re – using equipment when possible

•  Recycle equipment that is no longer of use to the company as well as recycle paper, batteries and depleted toner cartridges

CYNET and its members seeking to improve their energy efficiency and limit energy consumption growth while also contributing to a cleaner environment

Ø  CYNET Undertaken actions (1/3)

!  CYNET promotes good practices of equipment usage and reduction of waste in support offices, data centres and network-deployment such as: •  Keep energy usage low. •  Substantial power savings can only be made by powering down desktop PCs when they are not needed. •  Close all windows and doors in the offices while the air-condition (ACs) units are working to avoid any losses and

unnecessary operation of the ACs. !  CYNET will investigate the use of the Android Diskless System which provides a set of tools to boot and manage

diskless computers on a LAN. •  Diskless android PC’s that can offer same capabilities as a desktop PC letting the user to connect on a cloud

server or network and run its applications remotely using SaaS - Software as a Service which is the way delivering applications over the Internet—as a service.

!  Purchase Energy Star equipment. !  CYNET suggests to use Smart Power Distribution Unit (PDU) to continuously monitor the power consumption in real

time in offices and Data Centers/POPs. Smart PDU can provide critical information, showing the engineers where and how the power is consumed. CYNET can also support its members for similar functionality.

!  CYNET could also encourages its members to improve their datacenter’s energy efficiency : •  Virtual servers •  Decommission comatose servers •  Consolidate lightly used servers •  Organize and improve stored data •  Invest in technologies that use energy more efficiently •  Take the advantage of the “Hot Aisle/Cold Aisle” layout •  Contain or enclose your server racks •  Review general air flow improvement tips •  Adjust the temperature and humidity in your data. •  Retrofit your air conditioning with variable speed fan drives •  Install an air-side economizer •  Install a water-side economizer •  Maintain recommended temperature and humidity levels in the data centres to avoid the excessive operation of the

air-condition units by using room thermostat with sensor. !  Measuring and tracking the energy consumption of data center is an important means for effective management. !  CYNET may participate in training on a range of energy efficiency topics.

Principle No.3: Reduce the consumption of energy and increase energy conservation and energy efficiency

!  In addition, if there are time and funds available, CYNET is willing to explore at a later stage more advanced investigations on how to reduce the power consumption of energy and in parallel energy conservation and energy efficiency. Some of the investigations are referring below : •  Deciding to transport Bits or Energy •  Virtual CPE and NREN Energy Savings •  Impact of Malicious Traffic on Electrical Power Consumption in ICT rooms •  Power Saving Utilizing Power over Ethernet (PoE) •  Power Savings Advantages of Using Optical Networking equipment.

!  At this phase CYNET will examine the tasks called “Market Survey of Power Efficiency Equipment” and “Evaluation of CYNET energy usage” which CYNET has committed to present and investigate under the scope of NA3-T3 activity “The Greening of Services”.

Principle No.4: Promote the use of appropriate ICT services as an environmentally positive alternative and participate in research activities to explore new innovations in Green ICT. Ø  Purposes and Objective:

!  CYNET may promote the use of appropriate ICT services as an environmentally positive alternative to help the academic organizations and consequently its members to use Green ICT. •  Substantial savings achieved with unified internet services •  Dematerialization activities such as school e-Books and Digital examinations with IPv6 •  Investigate Software Defined Networking (SDN) techniques. SDN is a new approach to designing, building and

managing networks. The basic concept is that SDN separates the network’s control (brains) and forwarding (muscle) planes to make it easier to optimize each.

!  CYNET will examine the advantages and disadvantages of Videoconferencing and Working from Home and demonstrate them emphasizing the positive impact to the environment and automatically contribute the reduction of carbon footprint.

!  CYNET is willing to participate in any workshop/conferences with any of the topics of Green ICT, sustainable development, energy conservation, carbon emissions etc

!  CYNET will participate in the future in GEANT or other European Research Projects along with other NRENs to discover new innovations in Green ICT.

Conclusion

By developing and promoting this environmental policy, CYNET can motivate its employees and its members, to work together for an environmentally sustainable future. This policy analysis reflects the basic principles guiding into improving environmental performance. CYNET is willing to work with others in the NREN community to raise standards and carry forward greater enhancements in environmentally sensible practices. In cooperation with other NRENs and by sharing Information , CYNET can contribute to the protection of environment.
