On July 15, a San Josecoalition a ssem-bled at Sacr ed

Heart Community Service Cen-ter. They provided their storiesrelating to Operation Commu-nity S hield a nd t he c onse-

quences for the local police de-partment when sustaining thisprogram.

San J ose P olice C hiefMoore h as i ncorporated t woImmigration Customs and En-forcement (ICE) agents into thecity’s police department as partof the Depar tment of Home-land Security P rogram calledOperation Community Shield.

“At this time there is muchfear in the community in know-ing that w e have two agentsworking with the police depart-ment,” said Maria Fernandez, community organizer, SacredHeart Community Service Cen-ter. “ This is of gr eat concernand is why we are united.”

The c ommunity s ent aclear message that they don ’twant the agents in San Jose. The reality is that a lot of peo-ple in the immigr ant commu-nity reasonably don’t trust thepolice department. Some havewitnessed crimes or have beenvictims, y et they r efuse, be-cause of lack of trust, to hav ethe police involved. Many anx-iously believe Operation Com-munity Shield will only makematters worse.

“As you all know it is v eryeasy to do and we all survive inthis community by stereotyp-ing. We don’t know who theseICE agents are, we don’t know

if they’re male or female. Wedon’t kno w anything aboutthem and right no w they ar ethese faceless feder al Home-land Security agents who ar ebringing anxiety, concern andfear in the community ,” saidJudge LaDoris Cordell (Ret.), In-dependent Police Auditor, Cityof San Jose.

This appr ehensive com-munity is willing to work withthe police depar tment. Theywant to be able to depend onthe police and build a trustingrelationship. They also want tomeet the agents and r equestthat it be done within 30 days.

“I am str ongly in suppor tof going this next step of hav-ing these ICE agents meet faceto face with community leadersin the immigrant community,”said Judge Cordell.

The coalition believes thatthousands of families ar ebeing separated by police en-counters. They fear the numberwill increase with the additio nof these ICE agents. Theywould like to meet them to bet-ter understand their role. Theyalso want to kno w how a per-son can report misconduct.

“We will be aware. We willnot let them do whatever theywant and we’ll be watching thisprogram,” said Fernandez. w

Do Not Be MisledOr Mis-Influenced

These days the mainstr eam media, radio, TV and newspapers, convey alot of rhetoric that is solely indicative

of the posturing that the politicians want toproject towards their constituents. F or exam-ple, Republican Party leaders keep asking forPresident Obama to reveal or present his plansto deal with the national debt ceiling.

While the President is the Chief E xecutiveOfficer (CEO) as w ell a s the Commander inChief, he may pr oposean approach, but it i sCongress that presents alegislative proposal thathas been debated, ev al-uated, and approved byall par ties. It up to theCongress to pr opose ‘aplanned program whichwould deal with the na-tion’s financial responsi-bilities’. The P residentmay sign…in which casethe legislative proposalbecomes the law of the land or he may v eto it(not approve). Neither party of Congress haspresented a comprehensive financial plan thatcould continue to lead this nation ’s economyout of its current recession.

And all that talk about privatizing the SocialSecurity Program is just a lot of balderdash(B.S. to all y ou). Social security funds ar e theaccumulative payments of both employee andemployer to the social security escrow fund. Itbelongs to the people and is sacrosanct. Con-gress must not use these escrow funds for anyother purpose. Certainly, future adjustmentsare required, however, the funds that ar e al-ready there may not be ‘r eallocated’ to meetany other U.S. governmental obligation. Socialsecurity funds are the one program where themoney belongs to the people. Let’s keep it thatway.

Another item that is often talked about isMediCare. Here, Congress can make adju st-ments at the peril of not being re-elected. Thereare opportunities to ‘save money’. One is to re-ally go after those health car e providers whoovercharge or make false char ges. But also, there is a need for the physicians (called the‘providers) to stop prescribing drugs and ther-apies which are not effective at all or may bejust another case of ‘defensive medical prac-tice’. It has al ready been docu mented thatabout 40% of health care costs are applied dur-ing the dying process of a patient. Anybodywho takes the tim e to obser ve and considerhuman life spans knows that despite the appli-cation of medical knowledge and its appliedtechnology, which are ever advancing and in-creasing, the outcome is still a human death

rate of 100%. There must be a point when thefamily, the physician, and possibly a family pas-tor, can all agree to stop the assertive practiceof ‘saving and extending life at all costs’. Be-yond th is point it is pr oper to deal with thedying patient’s pain and suffering….and that isall. Why do this? Because too many familiesspend all their wealth trying to extend the lifeof a loved one. The outcome is that these fam-ilies end up becoming ‘wards of the local com-

munity’. Furthermore, l et’s

consider the currentpractices (and charges)of the insurance indus-try with regards to theobligatory malpracticeinsurance a nd t hehealth care insurancecurrently tied tooclosely to employmentbenefits. The entire in-surance industry mustbecome subject to im-

partial analysis, monitoring and regulation toeliminate profiteering and abuses.

A final ‘national debt’ consideration to keepin mind is the one wher ein wars were enteredinto by prior administrations. The two wars, ini-tiated by the George W. Bush administrationwere initiated without that Republican admin-istration and Congress ever dealing with itspayment. It was cond ucted on ‘ money bor-rowed’ by the U.S. Treasury from China, Japan, and many others who know that, up to now,America has never defaulted on its obligationswhich have been authorized by Congress.

Do not become mis-informed and mis-ledby all that political balderdash that is an over-whelming diversion from our national r eality. That reality is that corporations need to step upto invest in future markets, fund new factoriesand businesses, and thereby create jobs whichpermit the worker to become a consumer ofgoods and services. This is what is not happen-ing on a s cale sufficient enough to solve thecurrent non-employment of 18 million Ameri-cans who want to work honorably to earn theirliving.

The national debt limit is a crisis that canbe resolved when those responsible for makingpolicy begin to do their jobs as decision mak-ers. In the 2008 election, the Republican Partybecame the majority in the House of Represen-tatives of the U.S. Congr ess. It continues topass on all costs to the people and away fromthe very wealthy and influential. Once again theAmerican Public must not permit itself to bemisled and mis-influenced as it was during that2008 election.∆

Another item that is oftentalked about is MediCare. Here,Congress can make adjust-ments at the peril of not beingre-elected. There are opportu-nities to ‘save money’. One isto really go after those healthcare providers who overchargeor make false charges.

Last w eek I shar ed with y ou someideas for fun family activities as wellas places to look for additional ac-

tivities, such as your local library or commu-nity center. I would also like to invite y ou toanother great FREE family event this summer, the Santa Clara County Youth Fair. It runs fromAugust 4-7, from 10AM to 8PM each day, atthe Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, 344 TullyRoad, San Jose. Parking is FREE on Thursdayand Friday and it’s only $5 per car on Saturdayand Sunday. This year’s theme is Get R eadyto Saddle Up!

I have many great memories of the fair –the smell of funnel cakes and r oasted corn, the rush of the carnival rides, the agriculturalexhibits, and the sights and sounds of thelivestock ar enas. And of course a fun dayspent with my family.

This year’s fair will have all of those clas-sic fair activities and much more. It has beentransformed into a modern fair with some-thing for everyone. There will be many handson activities including the “World of Music”exhibition. A “World of Music” is an inter ac-tive ‘hands-on’ museum of music, housingover 300 different ethnically diverse and/orhistorical instruments from six continents. Byexploring the instruments in this exhibit, youwill get a glimpse into other cultures and his-tory in an educational yet fun environment.

In addition to the museum portion of theexhibit, A World of Music features ongoing in-teractive rhythm workshops wher eby stu-dents of all ages can gather to learn simplepatterns under the guidance of a musician or

teacher. There will also be daily drum circleswhere even people without music experiencecan explore the world of percussion and drumrhythms.

For a l ighthearted an d en tertainingglimpse at Wild West, come watch the Fablesof the West perform daily at the fair. “The littlecowboys on the little horses” combine improvcomedy, western f lair, and wacky antics toshow how the West was fun!

The fair will also be hosting a talent andperforming arts competition. Sure to be a hit, this competition will include y outh perform-ing a variety of acts fr om ballet and hip hopdances to br oadway and country singing. These performances will be held throughoutthe day on Saturday and Sunday.

You can’t forget the amusement rides. The fair will be bringing in ev en more ridesthis year for hours of entertainment. Grab arucksack to ride do wn the slide or climb onthe Ferris Wheel for a bird’s eye view of thefairgrounds.

Last but not least, visit the air conditionedExpo Hall to view the liv estock show. Thisshow provides an opportunity for kids to seeall sorts of livestock from chickens to sheepto cows. These animals were raised by youthparticipating in the 4-H pr ogram. If you seethem grooming the animals, feel free to askthem what it is like to raise farm animals andhow much work is involved. I’m sure it will bean experience never to be forgotten.

Silicon Valley’s technology cluster isemerging from recession into a newperiod of growth and opportunity, ac-

cording to a comprehensive study completed forfour Silicon Valley workforce investment boards.Interviews with key executives indicate a 15 per-cent jump in high skill jobs over the next twoyears confirming the r ecent news of hiring b yGoogle, Facebook and other Valley tech compa-nies.

“To make the most of these oppor tunities, job seekers must adapt to changes in what em-ployers want by demonstrating increased flexi-bility and the ability to work as part of a team toremain relevant in the futur e workplace,” saidStephen Levy, director of the Palo Alto-basedCenter f or C ontinuing S tudy o f t he Ca liforniaEconomy (CCSCE) and an author of the study.

“And the Valley faces enormous challengesto provide great schools, world-class infrastruc-ture and a high quality of life so that talented en-trepreneurs, workers and their families will wantto live and work in Silicon Valley,” he said.

Based on 250 employer surveys and morethan 50 executive interviews, this research studyprovides a roadmap for Silicon Valley’s efforts toaddress workfor ce changes and competitiv echallenges. The study – Silicon Valley in Transi-tion: Economic and Workforce Implications in theAge of iPads, Android Apps and the Social Web– proposes a number of r ecommendations forbetter preparing and connecting job seekerswith available employment opportunities and forSilicon Valley to maintain its dominance as theworld’s preeminent innovation factory.

To compete for future tech jobs, job seekers will need to:

Demonstrate entrepreneurial skills, flexibil-•ity, adaptability and a passion for life-long learn-ing in addition to relevant technical skills.

Shift their resume and job search strategies•to focus on their experiences helping pr eviousemployers solve problems and innovate.

The study contains “Tech Resume 2.0,” withresume advice from 27 tech recruiters and hiringdecision makers.

Executives locate in Silicon Valley to be nearthe world’s largest pool of high tech talent, to benear their key customers, to enjoy a high qualityof life and to hav e access to capital and gr eatuniversities. Today’s fiscal struggles ar e threat-ening many of the Valley’s advantages – advan-tages that are critical to r emaining competitivein an area with high labor and housing costs.

Going forward, leaders must find ways to im-plement an active investment agenda – in theValley’s workforce, infrastructure and communi-ties. “Current success is no guarantee of futuresuccess in our increasingly competitive world,”said Kris Stadelman, Executive Director of NOVA,one of the Silicon Valley workforce board studysponsors. “W orkforce boar ds, our educationpartners and Valley companies know we have towork hard to adapt to the changes and chal-lenges identified in the study.”

The study recommends workforce boardsmust remain aligned with ever shifting local em-ployer skill demands in order provide job seek-ers with r elevant advice on job sear ch andresume strategies. Boards can a lso establishportfolio learning labs to give laid-off job seekersopportunities to demonstrate their grasp of newtechnologies and their passion for learning andinnovation.

The sponsoring workforce boards providejob training and career development assistancefor job seekers, as well as connecting job seek-ers and local employers. Participating boards in-clude NOVA, based in Sunnyvale, work2future inSan Jose and San Mateo County and Santa CruzCounty. Green LMI of Massachusetts, BW R e-search of Carlsbad, CA and CCSCE led a nationalresearch team that co nducted the eight-monthstudy.

Pens, pencils, erasers, paper - these arethe school supplies students needyear after year and are on almost every

parent’s back-to-school shopping list. Ho wever, that doesn’t mean they’re the only supplies stu-dents need to survive the school year with ease.Instead o f w aiting u ntil y our s tudent r ealizeswhat he’s missing once it’s too late, shop now forthese easily overlooked back-to-school essen-tials.

“Most students hav e that ‘oh no’ momentonce they’re under a deadline and r ealize theydon’t have the right materials to com plete it orwhen they’re already stuck in a difficult situa-tion,” says Rebecca Smith of Master Lock. “Usingpast experience to think ahead and shop earlywill help students - and parents - avoid thosedreaded moments and navigate the school yeara bit easier.”

1.Pencil sharpener. You’ve got the pencils,

but sharpening them can be a real hassle as notall classrooms have a functioning built-in sharp-ener. To help students av oid trips to and fr omtheir desk during impor tant tests, pur chase asmall pencil sharpener with a built-in shaving col-lection system that can be stored in a backpackpocket.

2. Portable stapler. Students are often in

need of a quick staple, y et a stapler is no whereto be found. A small, por table stapler can be amajor timesaver for students who are frequentlyrequired to turn in multiple-page assignments.

3.Umbrella. Whether walking to class on

a college campus or home fr om middle school, umbrellas are an easily overlooked school essen-tial that pay dividends in student comfort. A col-lapsible m odel t hat f its i n y our s tudent’sbackpack or book bag will be easiest to carrywhenever the weather looks questionable.

4.Correction fluid or tape. For last-minute,

on-the-go fixes to important school assignments,a bottle of white corr ection tape or a corr ectionpen is a must when r e-printing or re-doing isn’tan option.

5. USB flash drive. Since so many school

projects are now completed on computers, a USBdrive makes it easy to save files and work onthem anywhere. Whether your student is workingon a paper at home, or on a group presentationat a friend’s house, files will be easily accessible.

6.Stain remover pen. From lunch spills, to

grass stains to stray pen marks, students appre-ciate being able to touch up messy spots thatwind up on their clothing throughout the day.Where water doesn’t always work, portable stainremover pens work w ell on har d-to-removespots.

7. Security products. School supplies be-

come useless if they’re stolen from your student. To help avoid theft, invest in at least four types ofsecurity products: a padlock for students’ schoolor gym lockers such as Master Lock’s Speed Dialcombination lock, a backpack lock to deter pick-pockets, a portable mini-safe that can help keepvaluables safe in a dorm room or in transit and alock to attach to your laptop or desktop com-puter.

8.Three-hole punch. From organizing class

notes and handouts in a three-ring binder foreasy r eview, t o b inding pr esentations b eforeturning them in, students find endless uses for athree-hole punch after investing in one.

9. Mints o r br ush s trips. S ince m any

schools do not allo w gum in classr ooms, mintsor brush strips are great options for students tocarry with them for use after a potent lunch.

10.Water bottle. If your school allows it,

help your student s tay hydrated by providingthem with a portable water bottle that can hangfrom a backpack via a simple car abineer. A hy-drated student equals a happier and mor e pro-ductive student. Water bottles are particularlyhandy if the school is old er and not equippedwith air conditioning.

Many would agree that Joe Hernandez of Little Joe y la Familiahelped pioneer Tex-Mex music but Hernandez says he justwanted to play music that his dad and compadres listened to.

The band’s sound soon evolved into a mixture of eras that include jazz, swing, country, and Spanish music that his family would compose. Themusic incorporates bits and pieces of many genres and styles. It has a littlebit of something for everyone all ages and races.

“Although it’s been called Tex-Mex, la onda, and tejano, I call it Chicanomusic,” said Joe Hernandez during an interview with El Observador. “It’s aform of American music that has r eally not been disco vered nationally orinternationally as well as it should be.”

The band brings in new audiences all the time. Their music is hand medown music wher e gener ation after gener ation his music gets passeddown. The spectators include young adults with their parents and some-times their grandparents.

During the 60’s, the band was for tunate to experience the awakeningof the hippy movement while touring in California. The song titled “LasNubes”, arranged in San Jose, has become one of the band’s signaturesongs and consider the city a home away from home.

“First time I played Japan was something very special to me,” said Her-nandez.

The front man was first inter ested in Japan’s culture after receiving abook that he couldn ’t put down. He was fascinated and knew he wantedto visit the country. After what seemed a lifetime, 14 years exactly, the bandbooked four dates on the island.

Hernandez has also sung for the Pope in his home state of Texas. Hehas had small roles in different movies and will soon be launching his ownsalsa products.

On July 29, Little Joe y la Familia will be at the Avalon in Santa Clara.

Little Joe “live” in Santa Clara

(ARA)

If y ou’ve ev er eatencanned s oup, s ippedsoda or chewed sugar-

less gum, chances ar e you’veeaten something that’ s beengenetically modified, alsocalled GMO. E ven when y oucook at home, GMOs are in theingredients we use. It’s hard tobelieve, but GMOs are in almosteverything we eat - according tothe Grocery Manufacturer’s As-sociation, 80 per cent of ourprocessed food is genetically

modified, unless it is certifiedorganic.

Just what does this mean?Genetically modified organismsor G MOs a re o rganisms t hathave been created through thegene-splicing techniques ofbiotechnology. This relativelynew science allo ws DNA fromone species to be snipped andinserted into another species ina laboratory to cr eate specificcharacteristics and new speciesthat do not occur in nature. Youmay have heard them referred

to as “fr ankenfoods” for thisreason. F or instance, a plantcan be engineered to becomeresistant to a pesticide, or evencontain i ts o wn p esticideswithin the plant cells, so thatthe fields can be sprayed withthe chemical and the crops willnot die along with weeds.

So, what does this mean toyou and your family? The truthis, we really don’t know yet. Thescience has not been ar oundlong enough for studies toshow the long-term health ef-fects that consuming GMOfoods might have.

“From a nutrition perspec-tive it’s not hard to connect thedots from GMO crops to healthissues. We have exponential in-creases in digestive issues, al-lergies and autoimmunediseases today and GMO cropsare found in so many of thefoods and food products (soy, corn) implicated in these healthissues,” says r egistered dieti-cian Ashley K off. “ This isenough for at least 30 othercountries to enforce significantrestrictions or outright bans on

GMOs because they ar e notconsidered proven safe. Whatwe do know is that anyone eat-ing GMOs is, in effect, a guineapig in a very large health exper-iment.”

More and more, people aredemanding transparency aboutwhat is in the foods they eat.One pr oblem is that the F DAdoes not r equire that compa-nies disclose if they containGMOs, so it can be hard to tellwhich products have them andwhich do not.

What can y ou do if y ouwant to avoid GMOs or at leastknow which foods they are in?

1. Learn more about GMOsat www.nongmoproject.org.

2. L ook for pr oducts thathave the Non-GMO Project Ver-ified Seal. This seal means that

a product has been pr oducedaccording to rigorous best prac-tices f or G MO a voidance a ndevaluated against strict stan-dards. Companies like Nature’sPath, a n e arly s upporter a ndboard member of the Non-GMOProject, hav e pr oducts inde-pendently tested for GMOs inorder to be able to bear the seal- in fact, they are the brand withthe most Non-GMO Project ver-ified products.

3. R ead labels. The mostcommon GMO ingredients arenon-organic so y, canola, cornand now beet sugar, includingall of their derivatives like cornoil, corn syrup, soy protein, soysauce and canola oil. Av oidproducts that contain these in-gredients unless they are certi-fied o rganic, a s i t i s h ighly

probable they are GMO. 4. Use the Non-GMO shop-

ping guide to make y our gro-cery shopping lists. You can findthe guide at www .nong-moshoppingguide.com, andyou can do wnload it to takewith you to the market.

5. Go organic. U.S. govern-ment law does not allo w ge-netic engineering to be used inorganic production or process-ing.

If you are concerned aboutwhat is in the food that you feedto your family, now is the timeto learn more about GMOs andlook for products that do notcontain them. With a little timeand effort, you can feel peace ofmind that you are making thebest choices for your family.

No tenía seguro médico y mi tra-
