PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Consequent to decades of information technologydeployment, organizations today have more information athand about their business environment than ever before.But in many cases the information is not being utilized toout-think the rivals. Thus organizations are missing out ona potent competitive tool. Business Analytics is all aboutsophisticated quantitative and statistical analysis andpredictive modeling used towards building competitivestrategies around data-driven insights that in turngenerate impressive business results. Exemplars ofanalytics are using new tools to identify their mostprofitable customers and offer them the right price;accelerate product innovation; optimize supply chains; andidentify the true drivers of financial performance. A wealthof examples--from organizations as diverse as HSBC,PepsiCo, Amazon, Barclay's, Capital One, Procter &Gamble, Wachovia, and the Boston Red Sox--illuminatehow to leverage the power of analytics.

This executive long distance programme is designed toexpose participants to state of the art tools and techniquesof analytics The programme coverage would includediscussion on topics such as Data Mining, ArtificialIntelligence, Soft Computing, Data Envelopment Analysis,Design of Experiments, Survey Sampling, StatisticalInference, Investment Management, Financial Modeling forRisk management, Advanced marketing Research etc.

The overall value gained at the end of the programme isexpected to be a solid foundation in topics needed forbuilding capabilities to take on the new form ofcompetition.

Admission Requirements

Graduates with minimum 50% marks, 2 years of workexperience and currently employed, may apply.

The EPBA programme is of one year duration.

The Programme Orientation for Batch 2 will be conductedin July 2009.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The EPBA is structured into three components:

Classroom Component: This core component, spreadover 1 year, consists of 15 modules.

Campus Component: The in-campus component is heldduring the program, covering 5 days (40 hrs), whichprovides the participants orientation towards the subjectarea and provide opportunity for getting hands-onexposure to tools of business analytics. Eight (8) hours outof this will be spent on project. Attendance in thiscomponent is compulsory for all participants.

Project Component: Participants would be expected towork on a problem drawn from their organization todemonstrate application of the concept. Expectedinvolvement in this component would be around 40 hours(includes 8 hrs. in campus).

Courses in the Programme

Foundations of Management – 160 hours

Functional Area Specialization (Marketing, Finance,Operations & IT) – 142 hours

This component of the programme is built around electivecourses (list given in Course Content) in term II in orderto demonstrate functional area specific use of businessanalytics. A student undergoing the programme will havethe option of specializing in one of the four concentrationareas by clearing the recommended coursework specific toa concentration area.

Project Work – 40 hours

Method of Instruction

The pedagogy will be highly interactive. It will leveragethe use of technology. It will consist of a judicious blendof lectures, real life case studies, quizzes andassignments.

The sessions will be delivered on HughesNet GlobalEducation interactive learning platform. The heart of theplatform is a powerful user interface that enables largenumber of geographically distributed students to have ahighly interactive one to one exchange with a centralfaculty. The system incorporates live broadcast video; twoway audio and data interactivity to enable the students towatch and interact with the faculty live on their PC’s.

Books

Individual copies of text books will be issued to theparticipants. The students can also avail books from locallibraries for reference.

Assignments

Assignments given by the instructors will have to besubmitted either electronically or as hard copies, asdirected by the instructor. Assignments form an internalpart of the evaluation process and hence should besubmitted on time without fail.

Assessment

Participants are evaluated on the basis of examinations forall the courses. Participants will be given any one of thefollowing grades: “Excellent”; “Good”; “Average”; or“Poor.” The cut-off marks for the grades will be revealedbut not the actual marks obtained. Those getting not morethan two “Poor” grades will get a certificate of successfulcompletion of the programme and the course-wise gradelist will be mentioned in the certificate. Those getting morethan two “Poor” grades will get only a certificate ofparticipation in the programme. In such cases, the gradelist will not be mentioned in the certificate.

Attendance Requirements

Participants are strongly advised to attend all the sessions.In addition to a minimum number of sessions per course,the participants are required to attend about 75% of thetotal number of sessions.

If a participant is unable to meet these attendancerequirements, then depending on the circumstances,programme directors may ask the participant to repeat thecourse(s) with the next batch on payment of theapplicable fees. In such cases, for grades above the“Average” grade, the grade will be adjusted one gradelower, i.e., the grade of a participant getting “Excellent”grade in the examination will be adjusted downwards to“Good” and “Good” grade will be downgraded to “Average”grade.

Campus Fees

The campus visit dates will be announced later. The campus visit fee is currently Rs. 15000/-. The demand draft payable to“Indian Institute of Management Calcutta” must be sent to the Institute programme office a month before the campus visit.

Refund of Fees

Fee once paid is neither refundable nor transferable towards any other student/ programme/ batch.

SUMMARY OF PROGRAMME REGULATIONS

Waiver

No waiver for any course is allowed for this programmeirrespective of whether the person has attended a similarprogramme anywhere else or not.

Re-examination

Except in unusual circumstances, the dates announced forexaminations will not be postponed. A participant who isabsent in the examination will be awarded “Poor” grade.The option is to sit for the examination with the next batchon payment of applicable fees. In such cases, for gradesabove the “Average” grade, the grade will be adjusted onegrade lower, as explained above. A participant can appearfor re-examination only once for a course. It may also benoted that the precise course content and the instructorfor a course may be different for the next batch.

A participant, who obtains “Poor” grade in theexamination, will have the option to sit again for theexamination with the next batch on payment of applicablefees. In such cases, for grades above the “Average”grade, the grade will be adjusted one grade lower, asexplained above.

Withdrawal from the programme and rejoining

Break in the programme is discouraged. But if withdrawingfrom the course is absolutely necessary then theparticipant must inform the Institute/HUGHES prior totaking the same and obtain approval.

Rejoining to the programme is not a guarantee but issubject to availability of seats and subject to approval ofInstitute/HUGHES. If permitted to rejoin, the participantmust rejoin within the next two batches and must followthe then existing rules and pay the remaining applicableprogramme and rejoining fees. Currently rejoining fees areRs 10,000/-.

Change of Centre

Policy for inter-city transfers: A student can opt forchange of centers inter-city (maximum twice only in acalendar year) subject to availability of seats. Priorpermission of HUGHES is required before changing thecentre on a prescribed application form along with therequisite fee, currently Rs. 1000/-.

The student will be admitted to the new centre only onproducing the centre change form duly approved byHUGHES.

Policy for intra-city transfers: In general, the intra-citytransfers shall NOT be allowed. In exceptional cases,where student has a very valid reason for requestingintra-city transfer, the change of centre would be possibleonly between the centers separated by more than 3 km byroad (shortest distance). Hughes shall decide the validityof the reasons for transfer and the decision so taken shallbe final and binding on both the centers.

Hughes reserves the right to transfer the student(s) to anycentre/classroom within the city in case the classroom of

his/her choice becomes non operational or is relocated dueto any unforeseen reasons or for reasons beyond thecontrol of Hughes.

For all academic matters, participants may contact theprogramme coordinator at the Institute (names andcontact details will be announced at the appropriate time).

Conduct of Participants

The institute & Hughes attach great importance tointegrity, honesty and discipline. Hence a high sense ofresponsibility is expected from all the participants inside oroutside the classroom as befits future managers.

The following action would be treated as misconducts onthe part of participants and will be dealt with severely:

• Late entry to classes, tests and discussions.• Absence during the classes, tests and discussions

without prior consent from the classroom coordinatorand faculty.

• Misconduct in class leading to damage to the propertyof the institute and Hughes.

• Misuse of facilities, PCs, library books and othermaterials provided to them.

• Reporting fictitious data for empirical study orassignments.

• Theft or fraud or dishonesty.• Smoking in the rooms earmarked for lectures,

examinations or in the library.• Leveling any baseless and false allegations against

any faculty member or employees of IIMC or Hughes.• Indulging in any act, which may adversely affect the

relations of the institute with its customers.• Indulging in any act, which is detrimental to the

reputation of the institute.• Copying in quizzes, examinations or assignments.

Classroom coordinators are also empowered to initiate anydisciplinary action against a student on any of the itemsabove pertaining to the administration of this programmein respective centers in consultation with the ManagerLDP, IIMC. Certificates will be issued to participants onlywhen proper amends have been made for the misconducton the part of the participants.

Violation of the rules will result in severe disciplinaryaction against the offenders with penalty of up to Rs.20,000/- or debarment of the student or both.

Conduct During Examination: Copying in any form inthe assignments or in any examination will be consideredas an act of indiscipline. The institute will initiate seriousdisciplinary action against a participant found guilty of anyof the above including debarring the participant from theprogramme.

HOW TO APPLY

Registration period

Application for Batch 2 will close on 15th May 2009.

Academic Year

The academic year for Batch 2 commences on 26th July2009 and will close on the date of the release of theexamination results.

Originals of mark sheets/certificates etc may not besubmitted. Applicants will be required to show thesewhenever necessary.

If any information submitted by the applicants is not foundto be true then and if they are selected and join theprogramme, then they will be summarily asked to leavethe programme.
